Backward class quota in med, engg admission from this year: CM

Time of Indiaa day ago

Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday asserted his govt will implement quota for backward classes for admission in medical and engineering courses from this academic year.
The govt had earlier faced opposition criticism for not including medical and engineering courses under the 11.25% quota in higher education announced last month for socially and educationally backward classes (SEBC)s.
Responding to media queries during a press conference, Majhi said his govt is committed to ensuring social justice. "For SEBC quota in technical education, there were some issues. Consultations are ongoing.
A decision will be taken soon. It will be implemented from this academic year itself," Majhi said.
Since advertisement for admission under the earlier rule of no quota for SEBCs had already been issued, the govt consulted various departments involved about possible complications, resulting in the delay behind taking decisions, a govt officer explained.
Sources said the govt is working on increasing quota for SC/STs from the current 20% to 38.75%, apart from introducing reservation for SEBCs in technical and professional education.

When asked to rate himself on a scale of 10, Majhi left it to the people to do so. "It would be unfair to mark myself first class. However, we implemented most major promises we had made to the people," he said.
Regarding the govt's stand against alleged corruption during BJD rule, Majhi said the govt is committed to taking action against those involved in mining and chit fund scams. "Officers have been empowered. But such things take time... to collect all information. We will take action at the appropriate time," he said.
Majhi also said the govt has begun the process to appoint a new Lokayukta soon and revive the anti-corruption authority.

‘From nobody to the White House': Who is Dominick McGee? MAGA influencer stirring up outrage on X

(Photo: NYT) Dominick McGee was once just another online voice shouting into the void. But this April, the 31-year-old walked into the White House for a Trump press briefing — a moment of validation he proudly recorded for his 1.5 million X followers. 'I was a nobody,' he was quoted as saying by the New York Times. 'No clout, no followers, no nothing, no money. And look what's able to be created in the land of the free.' McGee's journey from a one-bedroom flat in Miami to the White House has been anything but usual. He started out posting conspiracy theories from his couch. Today, he's one of the most well-known far-right voices on X. At one point, he was ranked the third most influential user on the platform — just behind Elon Musk and Andrew Tate. But while he gained a lot of attention, the money didn't always follow. His rise came from a familiar formula: post all day, stir controversy, and grab attention. McGee starts his online work at 9 a.m. and continues until 8 p.m., hoping to catch the platform's algorithm. One post about WNBA star Brittney Griner went viral with over 11 million views after he encouraged users to misgender her. 'I know for a fact that Brittney Griner will go viral,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Classic Solitaire , Built for Desktop Play Solitaire Download Undo 'It's a great post to start the day.' McGee grew up in South Carolina, where he once thought selling drugs or joining a gang might be his only way forward. Instead, he joined the Army, later studied at Penn State through a veterans' programme, and tried his hand at music and fashion. But it was Trump's 'Stop the Steal' campaign that brought him an online following. A Facebook group he ran was banned for sharing false election information. He then switched to X, where Elon Musk's platform rewarded posts that got attention — though the pay was unpredictable. Since 2023, McGee has made about $157,000 from X's revenue-sharing programme. He earned $67,000 in the first year, but after being kicked out of the programme in 2024, his payments dropped to just $12,000. He complained to Musk and got a 'Will fix' reply — but not much happened. He only got another $16,000 after that. McGee also earned about $62,000 from followers who pay $10 a month for his exclusive posts. He once landed a $150,000 deal to promote a MAGA-themed cryptocurrency. But that coin lost over 90% of its value, and McGee was left using what was left to pay for rent, food, and his dog's meals. At one point, he had only $7 in his bank account. Even though he talks about investing in real estate and buying a Lamborghini, McGee admitted he made less than $55,000 last year. 'Honestly, $150,000 is a lot compared to my broke a** in the past,' he said. 'But I'm actually pretty poor. I'm one of the poor creators.' One of his biggest complaints is that X doesn't tell creators how much they'll earn from each post, making it hard to plan. 'That's insane for any adult to have to live their life that way,' he said. Now, McGee is shifting again — this time to podcasting and short viral videos. He's started a new show recorded in a Miami apartment. The idea isn't just to talk, but to create 30-second clips that go viral. The topics are lighter — celebrity news and pop culture — meant to attract a wider audience before sharing his political views. It's a method used by others like Candace Owens. 'It's not what I started off as originally,' he said. 'It's a survival mechanism. That's what it takes.' But controversy keeps following him. In 2023, McGee was suspended from X for posting a disturbing news image about child sexual abuse. He later said he was misunderstood and upset that no one asked about his side of the story. On a recent podcast, a guest used a homophobic slur and shared white nationalist views. McGee seemed uncomfortable and later said, 'Social media has radicalised him a little bit.' 'The first goal is to be seen,' he said. 'And they give you that.'

Odisha aims to create over 1 crore jobs by 2047: CM

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday said his government has set an ambitious target of creating 1.1 crore jobs by 2047, when the country will complete 100 years of Independence. Addressing a national seminar on 'Good Governance and Developed Odisha -- 2036 & 2047' here, Majhi said his government has taken an ambitious resolution to make Odisha a prosperous and developed State by 2036, when the State will celebrate the centenary of its formation. This will help achieve the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047, he said. 'We have targeted to create 1.1 crore additional jobs in the State by 2047 at a rate of 5 lakh jobs per annum for building a 'Viksit Odisha',' Majhi said. To achieve the target, the State government has been preparing Vision Document-2036 and 2047, which is now at the final stages, he said, adding, 'This vision document is a roadmap for the dreams of 4.5 crore Odias. It is a promise to our future generations.' 'Vision document-2036 and 2047 is our resolution for building a prosperous and developed Odisha. We want to build an Odisha that will emerge as a shining star in developed India,' he asserted. Odisha aspires to become a USD 500 billion economy by 2036, when the State will complete 100 years of its formation and a USD 1.5 trillion economy by 2047, he said. 'To move towards a USD 500 billion economy, we need to achieve real double-digit growth every year for at least the next 11 years. The target is certainly big, but it is achievable,' the Chief Minister said. He suggested that the officers should make efforts to move Odisha from an agriculture-based economy to a mixed economy, without affecting agricultural production, and to create suitable opportunities for the educated youth by bringing them from the agricultural sector to the industrial and service sectors. Majhi said the State government has already started working in this direction and recalled the success of the last 'Make in Odisha' conclave. Industrialists from all over the country have shown interest in investing more than Rs 17 lakh crore in just two days of the conclave. About 13 lakh youth, who will be employed in the industries, will have to be trained and prepared for the industrial sector, he said. On employment generation, he pointed out that the government has allocated Rs 65,012 crore in the current budget for the creation of infrastructure and it is 6.1 per cent of the State's gross domestic product (SGDP). The Chief Minister further said that his government has launched programmes for qualitative development in the fields of education, health, social security, housing, women empowerment, tribal and Scheduled Caste development. Out of the total budget of the State government, Rs 89,861 crore will be spent on women empowerment alone, while the government has made a separate provision of Rs 68,881 crore for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, who together constitute about 40 per cent of the State. On this occasion, he said the State is making efforts to build Nabakrushna Choudhury Centre for Development Studies (NCDS) as a global socio-economic institution to support the government in achieving the goal set in the vision document.
