DA calls on Joburg mayor to fire MMC Kenny Kunene
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has urged mayor Dada Morero to act against the MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene and remove him from his post permanently.
The call comes as Kunene admitted that he was at the residence of Katiso 'KT' Molefe, one of the suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Amapiano artist and businessman Oupa 'DJ Sumbody' Sefoka in November 2022.
Kunene was present at Molefe's Sandton residence when he was arrested on Tuesday, 22 July. In several media interviews, Kunene explained that he was at Molefe's residence in Sandton, accompanying journalists who wanted to do an exclusive story [for his online newspaper] on Molefe.

DA WANTS KENNY KUNENE TO BE AXED AS MMC
DA councillor in the City of Johannesburg, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku said hanging out with suspected murderers and bringing the entire executive into disrepute is punishable, and Morero must act.
Kayser-Echeozonjoku said a paid, month-long holiday is not an option for Kunene.
'Nothing short of his unconditional removal will suffice, pending the outcome of both ethics and criminal investigations into his links to suspected murderers.
'Unfortunately for McKenzie, we do not have faith in his so-called internal investigation. Especially not as he has already made his belief in Kunene's innocence so clear,' she said.

Following Kenny Kunene's TV interviews, Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie said he will place Kunene on special leave for 30 days pending an investigation.
'I will disclose who will investigate him, lawyers of good character. While he's being investigated I'm going to remove him from being an MMC.

'I'm also going to tell him to stand back from politics for one month until the investigation is done. That's the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life. Acting against Kenny Kunene is the hardest thing I've ever had to do,' he said.
In response to McKenzie's announcement, the DA said the PA leader's social media proclamation that he will suspend Kunene as an MMC has absolutely no legal basis.
'His internal party-political nonsense has no place in the Johannesburg executive. We do not expect more from him, but the law does. Kenny must go, for the preservation of the Executive's stature and Johannesburg.'

Police offer R300 000 reward for information on cop killers
Police have announced a R300 000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of suspects in the murders of three police officers in two separate shootings within 24 hours. On Friday, 8 August 2025, gunmen ambushed and killed two detectives from the Johannesburg Trio Task Team while they transported awaiting trial prisoner Jabulani Moyo from the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court back to prison. The suspects disarmed Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa, 51, and Sergeant Simon Masenye, 45, before shooting them. Moyo was last seen driving the abandoned police vehicle, which police later found several kilometres from the crime scene. National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola visited the families of the slain detectives on Saturday. Masemola warned that the country could not remain silent while criminals wage war on the state. He urged police officers to act decisively when necessary, always applying force proportional to the threat. 'Do not let your guard down,' he said. 'Be a step ahead of these criminals to ensure the safety and security of the public.' The Hawks are leading the investigation into the detectives' murders. Masemola said investigators are analysing witness statements and evidence from a filling station where the shootings took place. He confirmed that a multidisciplinary team, led by crime intelligence, is searching for Moyo. Masemola said investigators are probing whether Moyo was handcuffed during transport and why officers used a sedan instead of a police van. 'Our focus remains on finding Moyo,' he said. 'He has answers we need, and we will not rest until we find him.' Malema: 'A man who doesn't give women money is irresponsible'
Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader Julius Malema has criticised men who refuse to give money to the women in their lives. The outspoken politician made the comments during a Women's Day address in Secunda on Saturday, 9 August. In his Women's Day address to a group of female EFF supporters, Julius Malema praised the women of the past and present who work towards gender and racial equality in South Africa. He also highlighted his concerns over the alarming statistics behind gender-based violence and called on men to change. He said: 'Women get raped in churches, at schools, in workplaces, and social places, and they do not rape themselves; they are raped by men. Men have to stand up. Malema's speech then took a turn when he called out men who fail to provide financial support to the women in their lives. He added, 'Any man who doesn't give women money is an irresponsible man. Women have to receive money.' The outspoken leader then criticised men who neglect both their children and the single mothers they left behind. Palestinian Authority slams Israel's escalation in Gaza
RAMALLAH - The Palestinian Authority on Saturday lambasted the Israeli government's decision to expand its military operations in Gaza, calling on the international community to push for the entry of more aid into the Strip. According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said the Israeli government's moves were "an unprecedented challenge and provocation to the international will to achieve peace and stability". He went on to urge the "international community, led by the UN Security Council, to urgently compel the occupying state to cease its aggression, allow the entry of aid, and work diligently to enable the State of Palestine to assume its full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip". The PA - conceived as a first step towards a Palestinian state - exercises limited administration over parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The territory is home to about three million Palestinians, as well as around half a million Israelis living in settlements considered illegal under international law. The PA, however, does not have a presence in Gaza, which has been governed by Hamas for nearly two decades. Early Friday, the Israeli security cabinet approved plans for a major operation to seize Gaza City, triggering a wave of criticism across the globe. Despite the backlash and rumours of dissent from Israeli military top brass, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remained defiant over the decision. In a post on social media late Friday, Netanyahu said "we are not going to occupy Gaza - we are going to free Gaza from Hamas". The prime minister faces mounting pressure to secure a ceasefire to bring Gaza's more than two million people back from the brink of famine and free the hostages held by Palestinian militants. A statement issued on Saturday by the foreign ministers of Italy, Australia, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom took aim at the decision to occupy Gaza City. "This will exacerbate the catastrophic humanitarian situation, endanger the lives of hostages, and increase the risk of a mass exodus of civilians," they said. Israel's offensive has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, according to Hamas-run Gaza's health ministry, figures the UN says are reliable. Hamas' 2023 attack on Israel - which triggered the war - resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
