Image: X/Kenny Kunene The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has urged mayor Dada Morero to act against the MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene and remove him from his post permanently. The call comes as Kunene admitted that he was at the residence of Katiso 'KT' Molefe, one of the suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Amapiano artist and businessman Oupa 'DJ Sumbody' Sefoka in November 2022. Kunene was present at Molefe's Sandton residence when he was arrested on Tuesday, 22 July. In several media interviews, Kunene explained that he was at Molefe's residence in Sandton, accompanying journalists who wanted to do an exclusive story [for his online newspaper] on Molefe. ADVERTISEMENT DA WANTS KENNY KUNENE TO BE AXED AS MMC DA councillor in the City of Johannesburg, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku said hanging out with suspected murderers and bringing the entire executive into disrepute is punishable, and Morero must act. Kayser-Echeozonjoku said a paid, month-long holiday is not an option for Kunene. 'Nothing short of his unconditional removal will suffice, pending the outcome of both ethics and criminal investigations into his links to suspected murderers. 'Unfortunately for McKenzie, we do not have faith in his so-called internal investigation. Especially not as he has already made his belief in Kunene's innocence so clear,' she said. GAYTON MCKENZIE SUSPENDS HIS DEPUTY FROM ALL PARTY ACTIVITIES Following Kenny Kunene's TV interviews, Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie said he will place Kunene on special leave for 30 days pending an investigation. 'I will disclose who will investigate him, lawyers of good character. While he's being investigated I'm going to remove him from being an MMC. ADVERTISEMENT 'I'm also going to tell him to stand back from politics for one month until the investigation is done. That's the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life. Acting against Kenny Kunene is the hardest thing I've ever had to do,' he said. In response to McKenzie's announcement, the DA said the PA leader's social media proclamation that he will suspend Kunene as an MMC has absolutely no legal basis. 'His internal party-political nonsense has no place in the Johannesburg executive. We do not expect more from him, but the law does. Kenny must go, for the preservation of the Executive's stature and Johannesburg.' DO YOU THINK DADA MORERO WOULD TAKE ACTION AGAINST KENNY KUNENE? Moja Love's CEO calls for the immediate dismissal of Kenny Kunene

CEO of enterntainment channel Moja Love, Aubrey Tau, has called for the dismissal of Johannesburg's MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene for being associated with the criminals allegedly responsible for DJ Sumbody's death. On Monday, four men in connection DJ Sumbody's death, including Katiso 'KT' Molefe were apprehended, and Kunene was found at KT's home when he was being arrested. In a statement shared on Wednesday, Tau said he found Kunene's alibi was inconsistent and it was shocking that he as an MCC could possibly be linked to a criminal. 'As part of damage control, Kunene has gone on a media tour to try sanitise his image and lie to South Africans. In one media interview, he mentions that he does not know Molefe and in another he states that he met Molefe at some party. In another interview, he states that he was accompanying an unknown journalist to obtain an 'exclusive interview' with Molefe, whom he says he does not know. 'South Africans deserve honourable leaders, and Kunene cannot be seen as one. The Aubrey Tau Foundation calls on the immediate dismissal of Kunene and an investigation thereof. Johannesburg residents deserve members of council who are beyond reproach. The police should immediately ensure that Kenny Kunene's phone and his whereabouts is investigated and, if necessary, arrest him to face the full might of the law.'

Joburg DA calls for Kenny Kunene's axing after he was found at home of suspect in DJ Sumbody's murder

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg is calling for MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene to be fired after he was found at the home of a policeman suspected to be behind the murder of DJ Sumbody. News24 reported that when police arrived to arrest Katiso "KT" Molefe at his Sandton home on Monday, Kunene was there. In an interview on one of the news channels, Kunene said that he was there accompanying a young journalist who was interviewing Molefe for his media website, Africa News Global. But DA Johannesburg caucus leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, said that Kunene's role as transport MMC was now untenable. "The Democratic Alliance (DA) calls for Kunene's immediate resignation, and if he will not resign, Mayor Dada Morero must fire him. The laughable alibi offered by Kunene on eNCA this afternoon must be rejected out of hand by any reasonable South African."

City of Johannesburg has appointed Kiba Kekana as acting city manager with immediate effect. Image: X The City of Johannesburg has appointed Kiba Kekana as acting city manager, effective June 30, despite previous warnings against extending acting appointments in senior positions. The city made the announcement in a statement on Monday, saying acting mayor Kenny Kunene welcomed the secondment of Kekana by Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Jacob Mamabolo. Mamabolo seconded Kekana in terms of Section 54A(6) of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act No. 32 of 2000, as amended, and read with Regulation 20 of the Local Government regulations. 'This development follows the municipal council resolution of June 18, 2025, which resolved to request the MEC for local government in the province to second a person to act in the vacant position of city manager until a suitable person is appointed,' the city said in a statement. Kunene, who also serves as the MMC for Transport, said Kekana's appointment aims to stabilise the metro. 'This secondment will play a crucial role in the stability of the City of Johannesburg as we manage the transition of the political and administrative leadership,' he said. 'Accordingly, we wish to confirm that Mr. Kiba Kekana will assume the acting city manager responsibilities with immediate effect in order to ensure certainty in the interests of governance and service delivery in Johannesburg.' Kunene also assured residents that service delivery would continue without disruption. Video Player is loading. During that time, the Metro said it would pay Kekana R2.3 million to settle allegations of maladministration after a 13-month suspension. In January this year, the Johannesburg City Council appointed Tshepo Makola as acting city manager after the Johannesburg High Court ruled that former city manager Floyd Brink's appointment was unlawful and irregular. Makola, who was the city's chief operating officer, took over the role temporarily. IOL News previously reported that the city has been cautioned against extending acting appointments in senior roles. Mamabolo was asked about the second official for several vacant positions, including those directly accountable to the city manager. The ANC-led Government of Local Unity (GLU) presented a report on the status of senior management recruitment and current acting arrangements. Council considered allowing Mayor Dada Morero to request an extension of Makola's acting term or the secondment of a new candidate. Several key posts also remain filled in an acting capacity, including communication, social development, public safety, operations, human settlements, and the city manager's office. The city sought a three-month extension for acting appointments of Dr. Tinashe Mushayanyama and Candice Molefe.
