Click, buy & regret: Customers in Bengaluru struggle to return wrong & fake items

Time of India4 days ago
Bengaluru: What was once celebrated as a revolution in convenience has turned into a source of frustration for many online shoppers. As e-commerce has become a norm in urban India, a new kind of consumer complaints is becoming prevalent — defective or even fake products delivered, with little to no recourse for the customer.
A pattern is evident: when buyers receive wrong or damaged products, their complaints are often dismissed or redirected to the delivery agents. Instead of redressal, many are asked to prove their claims — typically by sharing an unpacking video. In effect, the burden of proving fraud is pushed on to the consumer.
Data reflects the scale of dissatisfaction. As of June 2025, the Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (KSCDRC) had logged nearly 1.3 lakh complaints related to e-commerce and other miscellaneous categories — nearly 40% of the total 3.3 lakh consumer cases in the state since its inception in 1989.

Suneetra Datta, a 45-year-old resident of Kengeri, recounted her ordeal. She had ordered a branded kurta on a well-known online platform for her son, paying Rs 1,298 via UPI. What arrived instead was a bundle of torn cloth. "I was shocked. Every detail — product ID, payment method, invoice — matched. Yet no action was taken after I raised the issue. This is unacceptable," she said. Despite reaching out to the delivery partner and the e-commerce firm, she hasn't received a refund three months on.
In another case, Pranay Poradanla, 25, ordered a hoodie from an online fashion retailer, only to have his return request denied on the grounds that the item wasn't officially marked as delivered. "It took 20 days of constant follow-ups just to get the correct product. For one hoodie, I was made to suffer. It's mentally draining," he said.
Experts say the problem lies in a systemic lack of accountability. "Online platforms often act like neutral parties when something goes wrong, claiming they are only aggregators," said Shivashankare Gowda, president of KSCDRC.
"Consumers trust these platforms thinking the sellers are vetted. But when issues arise, the platforms back away and direct buyers to deal with vendors directly."
A Central Crime Branch official noted that while platforms have made shopping easier, consumer vigilance has not kept pace. "Always opt for payment on delivery and try to check the product in front of the agent or record an unboxing. These basic precautions now matter more than ever."

Tunnel Road bidders want B-Smile to clear dust and debris

BENGALURU: Big companies showing interest in Bengaluru's Twin Tunnel Road project, have asked Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE) to take up the responsibility of clearing silt and soil after boring, but the civic body has shot down the proposal. It said the company bagging the tender will have an investment share of 60% under the Build-Own-Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model and will have to deal with it, and the government will only facilitate it. The 16.75-km tunnel road will take away 40 per cent of traffic from surface roads once completed, says BS Prahallad, Director, B-SMILE. The agencies which took part in the meeting, asked the civic body to extend the technical bid meeting scheduled for September 3. According to Prahallad, the land required for the project is very little, as most of the work is underground, and such projects have already been done in Mumbai, where a 4.5-km tunnel road was built. 'We already have Rs 800 crore, which will be used as compensation for land acquisition, and the team is involved in correspondence between the Ministry of Defence and Government of India, as permission will be required to drill a tunnel below their land,' he said. While the issue of transporting soil and silt from the tunnel has just begun to crop up, geologists and environmentalists argue that the absence of a plan to move silt and soil may lead to an increase in pollution, as dust particles may get mixed with air during summer, while during the monsoon, the dumped soil will turn into sludge and may run into fields and roads if dumping sites are not identified and handled well. 'There are guidelines for transporting soil and silt. It has to be done in an enclosed system. Before the excavation or boring, a study will have to be conducted to know the weak and strong areas, and corrective measures will have to be taken,' said Professor D Parameshwar Naik, department of Environmental Science, Bengaluru University.

BJP MP, Two Others Booked After Driver Dies By Suicide In Karnataka

An FIR was registered against BJP MP K Sudhakar and two others on charges of abetment of suicide after death of a 35-year-old contract driver employed under the Zilla Panchayat in Chikkaballapura, reported PTI citing officials. The deceased, M Babu, died by suicide on Thursday morning by allegedly hanging himself from a tree at the Deputy Commissioner's office premises, according to police. Babu reportedly left a suicide note where he named BJP MP Sudhakar and two others, accusing them of being responsible for his death, the police added. The police stated that Babu had been working as a contract driver in the Zilla Panchayat for the past six to seven years and was assigned to the chief accounts officer. 'We recovered a death note from the scene, which mentions several names. We are verifying the allegations and investigating the case from all possible angles," he added. Another senior police officer said the note named BJP MP Sudhakar, a Zilla Panchayat accounts assistant, and a man identified as Nagesh. Babu alleged that Nagesh and the accounts assistant had 'cheated him of several lakhs of rupees", claiming they could help him secure a government job 'using the MP's influence". 'These are serious allegations. A thorough investigation will determine whether the MP was directly involved or if his name was misused. We are examining all angles," the officer said. An FIR has been filed under sections 108 (abetment of suicide), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the relevant sections under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act, 2015 In the FIR, BJP MP Sudhakar has been named as accused 1, Nagesh as accused 2 and Manjunatha as accused 3. Further investigation is underway. Reacting to the incident earlier in the day, BJP MP Sudhakar told reporters in New Delhi that he was 'deeply pained" by the death but denied any connection to the deceased. 'I heard about the suicide at the DC office in Chikkaballapura. It has deeply saddened me. I offer my condolences to the family. I have never seen or met this person, Babu, in my public life," Sudhakar said. The MP, a former minister and three-time MLA, said he had helped many youths secure employment and did not understand why his name was mentioned in the note. 'I have no information about the other two individuals named in the note. I've heard that Nagesh and Manjunath allegedly promised Babu a job and took Rs 10-15 lakh from him. I don't know them personally," he added. Sudhakar said Nagesh's father-in-law was a former JD(S) taluk panchayat president who joined the BJP after he did. 'We had appointed him as the president of the Chikkaballapura Development Cell," the MP added.
