Speeding lawyer arrested in KZN after driving at 222km/h in his Mercedes

A lawyer and an auditor were among motorists arrested for excessive speeding this weekend along the N2 near Park Rynie, as part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport's ongoing "Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense, and Alufakwa" road safety campaign.
MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, commended the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team stationed at Park Rynie for their vigilance and commitment to curbing road carnage.
'We wish to pause and commend the RTI team from Park Rynie working along the N2 for their vigilance and dedication towards ensuring road safety this weekend,' said Duma.
Among those arrested was a lawyer who was allegedly clocked at 222km/h in a blue Mercedes-Benz while travelling from Umtata, nearly double the legal limit in a 120km/h zone.
He initially failed to stop when instructed, prompting officers to give chase before apprehending him. The man was taken to Scottburgh Police Station and released on R3,000 bail.
Also arrested was an auditor from Reservoir Hills, who was caught driving at 177km/h in a Hyundai. He was also taken to Scottburgh Police Station and granted R1,500 bail.
A third motorist, whose name has not yet been released, was arrested after being caught driving at 178km/h and remains in custody awaiting bail.

'These arrests send a clear message that nobody is above the law,' Duma said.
'However, we must hasten to point out that professionals such as the lawyer and auditor should know better.'
Duma expressed concern about the broader societal impact of reckless driving.
'Speedsters and reckless drivers are causing so much suffering and socio-economic struggles for many individuals and their families. In our interaction with many families of victims of road crashes, we hear stories of job losses, disability, and families being ripped apart.'
He added: 'As the department, we affirm our commitment to ensure the safety of road users.'
The Zero Tolerance campaign continues to operate across the province as authorities intensify efforts to reduce road fatalities and enforce compliance.

Burglary and vandalism cost Western Cape schools R1 million during holidays
School burglary and vandalism has increased in the province. Image: file The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will have to cough-up over R1 million after a spate of burglaries and vandalism at schools during the June/July holiday. The province recorded 57 incidents of burglary and vandalism at 46 schools during the winter break, while education watchdogs and authorities are calling for stricter policing and priority investigations. Education MEC, David Maynier, said the incidents were a significant increase compared to last year, when 45 incidents took place at 39 schools. He said property such as fencing, electrical wiring and computers were either vandalised or burgled. 'School properties are at particular risk of burglary and vandalism during school holidays, which is why the WCED subsidised holiday security at 424 schools in high-risk areas during the winter holidays,' he said. 'Despite this investment, 57 incidents of burglary and vandalism at 46 schools were reported during the June/July holiday period. This is a significant increase from the same period in 2024, when 45 incidents affecting 39 schools were reported. 'Most of these incidents were minor in nature, but nonetheless have an impact on the daily functioning of our schools. "Items stolen or damaged include building fixtures and fencing, electrical wiring, food and cooking facilities for school meals, sports equipment, computers and other electrical equipment, plumbing features, and a variety of school consumables. 'The estimated cost of repairing or replacing damaged and stolen items is over R1 million, which is unacceptable in the difficult financial circumstances the sector currently faces. Funding will now have to be diverted from educational activities because of the selfish actions of criminals.' Maynier said keeping schools safe required the support of communities, and quick reporting in apprehending perpetrators and retrieving stolen goods. Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC, Anroux Marais, also expressed concern over the increase in criminal activity, saying: 'Stealing from our schools is stealing from our children, and we urge any member of the public with information about these crimes to come forward immediately. We further urge SAPS to prioritise investigation of crimes in and around our schools, so that together we can keep our school properties safe.' National Professional Teachers' Organisation of SA (Naptosa) Western Cape chairperson, Yasierah Adonis, called on policing into such matters to be prioritised.

Panado and R35,000 missing: Edenvale raid leads to arrest of 10 police officers
Ten members from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Police in Gauteng arrested their colleagues on Monday while they were on duty on charges of theft and corruption. The arrests follow a raid in June. The spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), Lizzy Suping, said the arrested officers were involved in a multi-disciplinary operation by law enforcement initiated by the Premier of Gauteng. 'The accused officers raided a shop at number 7 Hermila Avenue in Edenvale, where they seized cigarettes and took cash amounting to R35,000 and three packs of headache tablets (Panados) to the value of about R5,000. They arrested the cashier for trading in illicit cigarettes and the other employee for violating immigration rules,' Suping said. However, the officers failed to record all items in evidence. 'It is also alleged that the accused officers failed to record all the merchandise seized from the shop at the police station. The shop manager allegedly disputed the quantity and type of merchandise booked in the occurrence book to the Station Commander,' Suping said. Ten South African Police Service and Ekurhuleni metropolitan police officers were arrested while on duty on Monday for their alleged role in corruption and fraud. They are expected to appear in the Germiston magistrate's court on Tuesday. 'It is alleged that on June 4 during a multidisciplinary operation by law enforcement, the accused officers raided a shop in Edenvale where they seized cigarettes and took R35,000 in cash and three packs of headache tablets to the value of about R5,000,' Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Lizzy Suping said. The nine constables and a sergeant arrested the cashier for trading in illicit cigarettes and another employee for violating immigration laws. 'It is also alleged that the accused officers failed to record all the merchandise seized from the shop at the police station. The shop manager disputed the quantity and type of merchandise booked in the occurrence book to the station commander.'
