Crosby, Rakell Continue Dominance As Top Duo
After the 2024 NHL trade deadline, Pittsburgh Penguins POHO and GM Kyle Dubas traded captain Sidney Crosby's best winger in Jake Guentzel. It seemed to be the first domino to fall in an effort to sell off the team's marketable, talented assets to begin pushing toward the future.
Luckily for Crosby - and the Penguins - there wasn't a repeat of the same thing at the 2025 trade deadline.
Crosby's "new" best winger this season is Rickard Rakell, who is in the midst of a career year having played with the captain for most of it. Rakell has 31 goals and 59 points in 68 games on the season, and that's second on the team only to his linemate and one of hockey's best and most consistent players.
And having the consistency together as linemates this season - the two spent only a few weeks on separate lines at the very beginning of the season - has helped both of them find even more chemistry than they've had in previous campaigns, when they played together on an irrregular basis.
"I think any time you're together with linemates for an extended period of time, usually, it's a good thing," Crosby said. "That's always a good sign. Just trying to read off of one another, you know, you're talking about certain plays, and then, obviously, the power play, we're together there... so, that can carry over to five-on-five sometimes, too.
"It definitely helps, and you want to get better as the season goes on. You play different teams, and you want to find a way to be productive.'

And Rakell, too, knows that when his name is on the lineup card next to Crosby and Bryan Rust, he can expect to get some good scoring chances throughout the course of a game.
'I think it helps to be playing with each other for a long time," Rakell said. "And, for me, just playing with Sid and Rusty... I know I'm going to get a few good looks every game, so I just try to stay ready for it.'
And he has, in fact, been ready for it. The duo has combined for 54 goals and 132 points on the season - including 12 goals and 26 points in the 12 games since the 4 Nations Face-off break - and they don't appear to be slowing down.
They've also contributed an expected goals for share of 54.63 percent together, which is the best expected goals share for any regular forward duo on the Penguins' roster.

When the duo plays away from each other? Rakell has an expected goals share of just 44.61 percent, while Crosby has a mark of 46.37 percent.
A few times in the past, head coach Mike Sullivan has referenced Rakell's ability to "make something out of nothing." One of the things - aside from his lethal shot - that makes Rakell a dangerous player is his ability to expose the soft areas of the ice.
Crosby agrees.
'I think just being aware and finding that open ice," Crosby said. "He's got a great shot, really good hands... so he's able to maneuver the puck pretty well in small space and doesn't need a lot of time to get a shot off. He's proven that a lot this year.'
As for what makes Crosby so dangerous? Well, it's more than documented at this point how high-IQ and lethal a playmaker Crosby is. But, for Rakell, Crosby's consistency and ability to sustain such a high level of play in a general sense is remarkable.
The Penguins' captain is just seven points shy of setting the NHL's all-time point-per-game seasons record at 20, which would break Wayne Gretzky's previous mark of 19.
'I mean, it's so impressive to be doing it for, what is it, 20 times?" Rakell said. "He's one of the best to ever play this game. He shows why. It's such a hard game, and for him to do it every year, it's pretty nuts.'
Crosby and Rakell's chemistry this season is pretty nuts, too. And thanks to Dubas's decision to keep the duo intact - at least for the rest of the season, and, perhaps, beyond - it will only have the potential to reach even higher heights.

‘My heart!' Inside Travis and Taylor's exciting date night at Stanley Cup final
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce sightings in South Florida are becoming as common as pileups on the Palmetto Expressway these days. On Thursday night, the duo du jour was photographed watching Game 4 of the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise. We think we know which team they were rooting for: Both rocked complementary Panthers colors, with Kelce wearing a red sweatshirt and shorts and Swift in a safari style tan getup and Panthers-coded red lipstick. One Traylor fan's X account shared a video of the two sitting in their seats in a VIP suite. Swift is drinking something out of a straw, and Kelce is captivated by something on his phone, which he then shares with his girlfriend, who mouths 'Wow.' The caption: 'These two.' Someone else caught a quick PDA session between them, writing, 'Stop it.' In the past few weeks, Swift and Kelce, both 35, have been spotted dining out twice in the Palm Beach area, freaking out fellow diners. But Thursday's sighting wasn't that much of a shock. Hours before, a few sports reporters like The Athletic's Chris Johnston tipped off the Internet that the tight end and pop star were attending the game. We hear they arrived via helicopter and were ushered to a private entrance. Forget football. We think Swift may be turning into a diehard hockey fan. At one point during the nail biter, when the Panthers tied the game with 19.5 seconds left in regulation, the hitmaker is seen patting her chest. Looking excited and nervous, she tells Kelce, 'My heart...!' Flyers Mock Draft: Expert Predicts Philly's Best-Case Scenario
The Flyers could end up with arguably the most talented forward in the draft class. (Photo: Eric Canha, Imagn Images) The Philadelphia Flyers still hold the sixth pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, but this expert's latest mock draft says that's not such a bad thing after all. Much of the dialogue to this point has centered around which players the Flyers are interested in, where those players will fall in the draft, and which teams are jockeying for their services. Advertisement Philadelphia figures to be one of the teams most locked onto a center, even despite their public comments regarding their willingness to take a winger or a defender. Fortunately for the Flyers, momentum is starting to pick up around the fall of one of the very best centers in the draft class in James Hagens. In his latest mock draft for The Athletic, prospects expert Scott Wheeler predicts Hagens will fall right into the Flyers' laps at No. 6, with Matthew Schaefer, Michael Misa, Anton Frondell, Caleb Desnoyers, and Porter Martone getting drafted ahead of him. "If Hagens gets here, I think the Flyers like him and would consider taking him. Same goes for Desnoyers, whose well-rounded game and smarts could really support and complement Matvei Michkov. But Desnoyers isn't going to be there," Wheeler wrote. "If Hagens isn't, I think they lean [Brady Martin] over Jake O'Brien here in terms of the other centers (though they did take O'Brien to dinner in Buffalo). The pull of a center, and a player like Martin, is real in this range." Advertisement The Utah Mammoth, who pick fourth, are said to be high on Martin as well and could consider taking him inside the top five. Such is life as a team with three first-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft. That said, Hagens is an undeniable talent who continues to draw comparisons to New Jersey Devils superstar Jack Hughes, who's already come within one point of a 100-point season early in his NHL career. Advertisement Pairing the 18-year-old Boston College talisman with Matvei Michkov will set the Flyers up for offensive success for two decades, and the remainder of the grueling rebuild would then center on adding cornerstone pieces around those two. Defenseman Jackson Smith, a potential top-10 pick, could be a trade-up candidate for the Flyers if management and scouts think he can be one of those pieces. On the right side of the defense, the Flyers have Jamie Drysdale, Oliver Bonk, Spencer Gill, and Helge Grans, so they have no need to force an early pick at this position. Plus, who knows what the future holds for Rasmus Ristolainen? Wheeler had other surprises in store for the Flyers in his latest mock draft (be sure to check those out), but landing Hagens would assuredly be the best-case scenario for the Flyers, who finished higher in the standings than many fans would have liked on the heels of that dreary ending to the 2024-25 season.
