Graft: Lokayukta Court rejects bail plea of Palike engineer
Yarappareddy was arrested by the Lokayukta police on June 17 after he collected Rs 10 lakh as bribe from the contractor for the release of the bill for the work undertaken pertaining to the comprehensive development of drainages and roads from the BBMP through a private firm.
'In the BBMP, no one can expect the work at the hands of the officials without paying illegal gratification', observed Judge KM Radhakrishna while passing the order rejecting the bail application of the accused.
Hemanth GM, a civil contractor, did the civil work during 2023-24 and submitted the bill for payment. The accused engineer has kept those bills pending with him without clearing. He made a call through his friend's mobile number to the accused, who in turn demanded the undue advantage of Rs 10 lakh to do the official favour in the matter of clearing the bills. Unable to pay the bribe, the contractor approached the Lokayukta police, who laid the trap and arrested the accused along with the bribe money on June 17.
Before the court, the accused, through his counsel, claimed that there was no demand by him and acceptance of a bribe, but a story of 'demand and acceptance' was created by the complainant with the help of his friend, whose mobile phone was used to call the accused.
Opposing the bail application, the public prosecutor apprised the court as to how the accused was actively involved in the crime and the impact on the prosecution witnesses if he is released on bail, besides destroying the evidence.
The court observed that the material prima facie goes to expose the direct involvement of the accused in committing the alleged offence, which is socio-economic in nature.

It added that of the 33 workers injured in the blast, 12 have been discharged and each was given Rs 1 lakh as interim relief. The company said its teams are stationed around the clock at hospitals to offer emotional and logistical support to affected families. Expert panel visits site During a 3.5-hour inspection, the expert committee examined the blast's cause, safety valve function, machinery replacements over 30 years, inspection frequency by the Inspector of Factories and if any safety recommendations were issued.

Man bites cop, family assaults police team during routine vehicle check
HYDERABAD: In a bizarre turn of events, a man named Laxman Singh and his family members, including his brother, mother and sons, were booked for allegedly biting police personnel, assaulting them and snatching a government-issued tablet during a scuffle near Gowlidoddi on Wednesday. According to the complaint, the incident occured when a traffic SI intercepted Laxman during a routine vehicle check. Since he was driving without a valid licence, he was brought to the police outpost. Laxman quietly alerted his family. One of them allegedly used a spare key to take away the vehicle without informing the officers. When confronted, Laxman asked his brother to return the vehicle, but instead of a calm handover, things spiralled. 'Who are you to question me? I didn't take the vehicle,' Laxman's brother reportedly shouted, before grabbing the SI by the collar. As tensions escalated, the SI called for backup. Head Constable Kumar and Woman Constable Ashwini rushed in, but were met with punches, abuse and bites. During the chaos, the family allegedly snatched a government-issued tablet from the police. Laxman's sons also joined in the assault before the entire group fled. The SI suffered injuries to his hand in the melee. Gachibowli police have registered a case under Sections 121(1) (voluntarily causing hurt to public servant), 303(2) (theft), 324(4) (mischief), 118(1) (grievous hurt) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Preliminary findings suggest the accused unlawfully accessed and disseminated confidential files related to medical college inspections and regulatory status. They also allegedly leaked NMC inspection schedules and assessor identities in advance, allowing institutions to prepare fraudulent setups to pass inspections. These included the use of 'ghost faculty,' fake patients, tampered biometric records, and bribed assessors to secure favourable reports. The investigation further revealed that Dr Virendra Kumar, another accused, coordinated operations in southern India through Dr Hari Prasad, Dr Krishna Kishore, and Dr Ankam Rambabu of Hyderabad. Posing as a consultant, Virendra Kumar arranged dummy faculty for inspections and facilitated Letters of Renewal and other NMC approvals in return for bribes. The CBI found that Venkat, Director of Gayatri Medical College, paid Rs 25 lakh to ensure a favourable decision on a pending matter with the NMC. A portion of this bribe was reportedly routed to Dr Virendra Kumar in Delhi through hawala transactions. Sources said Dr Hari Prasad and Dr Ankam Rambabu jointly oversaw regulatory matters for Father Colombo Institute of Medical Sciences in Warangal. Raids held across multiple locations.
