New Heights podcast: Emotional Taylor Swift reveals new album details for The Life of a Showgirl
The pop superstar made her podcasting debut on Wednesday night (US time), during a wide-ranging discussion with Kelce and his brother Jason that included details of her newest album The Life of a Showgirl.
During the episode, Swift got particularly emotional when talking about reclaiming her master recordings — a moment she thought about happening every day.
Swift fought back tears, and Kelce comforted her as she spoke in depth about the years-long saga and when she sent her mum and brother to LA to negotiate with Shamrock Capital, the owners of her music, on her behalf.
She explained how Kelce was playing video games when she found out she had bought the rights back, and the NFL star even started weeping when he was told the news.
'I haven't gotten my hopes up about this in a decade. A couple of months after the Super Bowl I was in Kansas City,' Swift said, adding she had been saving to buy her masters since she was a teenager.
'I get a call from my mum. She's like, 'You got your music.' I very dramatically hit the floor for real. Bawling my eyes out, weeping, like 'Really?' I said to myself 'Go tell Travis in a normal way'.
'He was playing video games, and he put his headset down. I was like 'I got my music back!' And I was heaving crying. This changed my life.'
Swift's masters had been owned by Scooter Braun, forcing her to re-record her first six albums as 'Taylor's version', before Braun sold them to Shamrock.
Swift said owning her music and the rights to it was very important to her.
'What I was looking to do, though, was I wanted to buy my music outright. I don't want to be in a partnership, I don't want to own 30 per cent of it. I want to own all of it. But it was a long shot to think they would do that,' she said.
'If I never bought back my music, one day someone else will leave all my music to their kids in their will.'
As soon as the episode dropped, Swift shared the cover art and release date of October 3.
The theme for this album is mint green and orange, and the front cover, designed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, shows Swift immersed in water wearing a sparkly showgirl outfit.
The back of the album revealed the 12 tracks, with the last song, the title track, featuring Sabrina Carpenter.
She also shared that she co-produced the album with Max Martin and Shellback.

Patrick Mahomes had doubts about Travis Kelce's romance with Taylor Swift at first
Patrick Mahomes was doubtful when Kansas City Chiefs team-mate Travis Kelce told him he was dating Taylor Swift. The Chiefs quarterback revealed that his friend Kelce had told him about the pair's relationship but explained that it was only when the pop star attended her first NFL game in September 2023 that he realised that the romance was genuine. Speaking in the ESPN docuseries The Kingdom, Mahomes said: "He told me during the week. It was one of those where I gotta see it until I believe it." Travis and Taylor's relationship was confirmed when the Blank Space singer attended the Chiefs' Arrowhead Stadium for the NFL clash against the Chicago Bears and Mahomes admits that her presence at the game generated a "buzz". The 29-year-old sports star said: "You definitely felt the buzz and you could see people in the stadium gravitating towards where she was up there. At the same time, we had business to handle." Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones was astonished when the team discovered Taylor's relationship with Kelce. He recalled in the documentary: "We were in the locker room like, 'Taylor Swift's here. Taylor Swift? For real? With Travis? Oh my God!' "We were like, 'Oh my God Travis pulled Taylor Swift.'" Taylor recently compared Travis wooing her to being a John Hughes movie as she opened up about how the pair's romance came about. The 35-year-old singer said in a revealing interview on her boyfriend and his brother Jason Kelce's New Heights podcast: "This dude didn't get a meet and greet and he's making it everyone's problem. "That's what I thought at first... You realise he didn't even reach out to our management. He came with Pat [Mahomes] and he thought that because he knows the elevator lady, that he could talk to her about just getting down to my dressing room." She continued: "It felt more like I was in an '80s John Hughes movie, and he was standing outside of my window with a boombox saying, 'I want to date you! Do you want to go on a date with me? I made you a friendship bracelet! Do you want to date me?" The Cardigan singer acknowledged that Travis, 35, turned out to be the guy she'd been manifesting in her songs. She smiled: "I was like, 'If this guy's not crazy, this is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.'"

George Michael would have approved of Taylor Swift tribute
George Michael's former partner believes the late singer would have been proud of Taylor Swift's upcoming tribute. The Bad Blood hitmaker announced her long-awaited new album, The Life of a Showgirl, earlier this week and among the tracks is a song called Father Figure, which will feature the melody from George's 1987 track of the same name. Kenny Goss - who was in a relationship with George from 1996 to 2009 - told TMZ the Careless Whisper singer would have totally approved of Taylor's song and while he never met the 35-year-old pop star before his death in 2016, the art dealer is pretty sure his former partner would have been a fan and appreciated someone of her standing taking an interest in his work. Kenny himself is a big fan of Taylor's music and though he had no idea she planned to interpolate Father Figure on her new album, it was a welcome surprise. Taylor announced The Life of a Showgirl earlier this week and has explained the prominent use of the colour orange in the artwork and promotional teasers for the record. During an appearance on the New Heights podcast with her boyfriend Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce, she said: "I've just always liked it ... It feels like energetically how my life has felt - and this album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during [The Eras Tour], which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant." The Karma singer also talked about the album's artwork, which shows her wearing a jewelled costume under the water in a bath and confessed the picture represents her at the end of a concert night because she always ends with a soak in the tub. She explained: "This represents the end of my night ... My show days are the same every single day, I just have a different city. And my day ends with me in a bathtub - not usually in a bedazzled dress ... [The album represents] the life beyond the show ... I would say it's everything that was going on behind the curtain." The Life of a Showgirl will be released on 3 October.

Taylor Swift has explained the orange theme for her upcoming album The Life of a Showgirl. The singer is returning with her latest record - which is due for release on October 3 - and she opened up about her use of the colour orange in the artwork and the promotional teasers explaining the hue represents how she was feeling while making the record during The Eras Tour which was "exuberant and electric and vibrant". During an appearance on the New Heights podcast with her boyfriend Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce, Taylor was asked about the significance of the colour orange and she replied: "I've just always liked it ... It feels like energetically how my life has felt - and this album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during [The Eras Tour], which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant." Taylor went on to talk about reuniting with producers Max Martin and Shellback for her 12th studio LP after previously working with the pair on her albums Red, 1989, and Reputation. She said: "One of the things about this record is, like, it's a record I made with my mentor Max Martin and Shellback. The three of us have made some of my favorite songs that I have ever done before. "They were my main collaborators on my Red album. We did We Are Never Getting Back Together, I Knew You Were Trouble, 22, Shake It Off, Blank Space, Style, Wildest Dreams, Ready for It, Delicate." She added of the paid: "They're just geniuses". Taylor also talked about the album's artwork, which shows her wearing a jewelled costume under the water in a bath and confessed the picture represents her at the end of a concert night because she always ends with a soak in the tub. She explained: "This represents the end of my night ... My show days are the same every single day, I just have a different city. And my day ends with me in a bathtub - not usually in a bedazzled dress ... [The album represents] the life beyond the show ... I would say it's everything that was going on behind the curtain."
