On India's 79th Independence Day, The Bharat Climate Forum Marks First-year Milestones, Propelling India Onto The Global Stage As A Climate Leader
New Delhi [India], August 15: The Bharat Climate Forum (BCF) marks India's 79th Independence Day by revealing its 2025 milestones, which demonstrate that the platform has successfully aligned India's economic ambition with climate leadership. In his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the importance of domestic manufacturing.
"True independence comes when we are self-reliant in critical technologies," he said.
BCF is driving this mission, setting the stage for creating a Viksit Bharat by 2047. A collaboration between Dalberg Advisors and the Council of International Economic Understanding (CIEU), BCF is a response to the pressing need for swift and decisive measures to solve the climate crisis.
Amitabh Kant, India's G20 Sherpa, said: "India's aspiration to become a $30 trillion economy and a developed nation by 2047 hinges on our ability to lead in clean technology manufacturing. Unless we decisively strengthen the battery value chain, mineral processing, and advanced manufacturing capabilities, we risk remaining import-dependent and missing the opportunity to lead globally. The Bharat Climate Forum is helping bring these critical issues to the forefront."
A Year of Milestones and Momentum
* After the inaugural event on January 10, 2025 which brought together over 300 leaders, including Shri Piyush Goyal, Shri Ashwani Vaishnaw, and CEOs from India's leading renewable energy and manufacturing companies, BCF launched the Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform (BCMP), which unifies stakeholders across policy, industry, finance and research, driving indigenized manufacturing across six priority sectors: solar, wind, BESS, e-mobility, green hydrogen and bioenergy.
* A huge milestone was achieved when BCF's recommendations were put into action by policymakers: the National Manufacturing Mission (NMM) blueprint by BCF was shared with the Government of India and the recommendations informed the Union Budget 2025 announcements on cleantech manufacturing support. BCF's suggestions on how solar, wind and battery manufacturing can be indigenized are now being used to guide ministry-level discussions on localization targets and supply chain development.
* BCF and CIEU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Solar Alliance aimed at building global leadership in cleantech manufacturing.
* The Cleantech Supply Chain Finance Working Group led by the Finance Industry Development Council was launched after the success of the Credit Summit, a gathering of leading banks, non-banking financial companies and policymakers hosted by BCF in June.
* BCF tied up with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Higher Education to shape a national initiative that equips the top 100 engineering colleges with curricula and training programmes centred on emerging industrial needs in solar, wind, battery and other priority sectors.
* BCF held the Aironomics Summit in May 2025, which dealt with India's air pollution challenge. The event was attended by Smt. Rekha Gupta, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi as well as Delhi Government officials and industry CEOs including Paytm's Vijay Shekhar Sharma.
"India's economic growth and climate goals can no longer be pursued in isolation. The Bharat Climate Forum is helping to create the bridge between industrial ambition, policy frameworks, and climate resilience," said Jagjeet Sareen, Global Climate Co-Lead at Dalberg and Member Secretary, BCF. "In our first year, we've shown that coordinated action can deliver benefits for the economy, the environment, and communities alike."

Nehru erred in signing IWT sans Parliament support: Modi in NDA meeting
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru erred in signing the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) without taking Parliament and the Union Cabinet into confidence, said people aware of the details. (Rahul Singh) Addressing the parliamentary party meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) lawmakers, the PM is learnt to have said that owing to the treaty, India did not get its fair share of water, and the then PM overrode all concerns about the water sharing agreement signed in September 1960. IWT, mediated by the World Bank, allocates water from six rivers — the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej — between India and Pakistan. It was put in abeyance by India, post the April 22 terror attack in Kashmir, which killed 26 people. According to a person aware of the details, the PM told the lawmakers that now states such as Jammu & Kashmir can get the water that was otherwise diverted to the neighbouring country. 'The PM said there was no consultation with the Cabinet and no detailed discussion on the issue; then when there was an uproar, it was then discussed in Parliament for a few hours. The PM said even in Parliament there was opposition to the treaty by lawmakers from the opposition side…' said the person quoted above. The person quoting the PM said he pointed out how a Congress lawmaker had said the treaty was moorkhta ki had (height of foolishness). 'The Prime Minister said his government since 2014 has been undoing the sins of that era and decisions such as the IWT were signed by Nehru for his image building and ambition,' added the person, speaking on condition of anonymity. The BJP blames the then government for signing the treaty, which it claims was not in national interest as it gave away over 80% of Indus basin waters to Pakistan, leaving India with just 20% of the share. The PM also referred to the economy being resilient and cited the S&P Global Ratings decision to upgrade India's long-term sovereign credit rating for the first time in 18 years. 'He said the country's sound economy will draw more investment…he also recalled how soon after his Independence Day speech, he received calls from people who were optimistic about India,' said a second person aware of the details. The lawmakers also felicitated the NDA's vice presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan, whom the PM praised for his 'clean public image'. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju told mediapersons that the PM urged all parties, including the Opposition to come together and unanimously support the NDA's candidate. He added that defence minister Rajnath Singh is also reaching out to leaders across parties to build consensus. Recalling his ties with Radhakrishnan which span four decades, the PM is learnt to have praised him for being non-controversial, and for living a very simple life. 'The PM said he has only worked for society and the country and if such a person becomes the Vice President, it will be a great joy for the nation,' said the second person quoted above.

Wedding season boom: Hotels in Corbett, Goa, Rajasthan see record bookings

Besides Rajasthan, destinations such as Corbett, Goa and the hill stations in the North are seeing substantially higher demand than last year, hoteliers and wedding planners geopolitical developments, a greater number of auspicious dates and the launch of several luxury and premium properties in leisure destinations have led to a surge in demand for domestic bookings ahead of the upcoming wedding season. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to organise weddings within the country also seems to have struck a chord with wealthy Indians, industry insiders bookings are almost 80% higher than the same time last year for the Radisson Hotel Group, said Nikhil Sharma, managing director and chief operating officer for South Asia at the chain. 'Delhi-NCR continues to be a top choice, followed by hotels in the North and central India, especially those with large event spaces,' he said. 'Many of these hotels are already close to being sold out for the peak wedding months.'India's main wedding seasons are during November-December and from mid-January to mid-March. At luxury villa rental platform StayVista, wedding bookings this year have 'significantly' outpaced those of the previous year, said founder Ankita Sheth, adding that several villas in Goa, Kasauli, Coorg, Mussoorie and Alibaug are nearing full capacity for key wedding queries that the company gets have increased to as many as 200 this year from 70-80 last year, she Oberoi, founder of Q Events & Weddings, said customers are looking for wedding bookings for certain dates at hotels and the availability is very limited. 'With countries like Turkey being out of the picture this year, more people are preferring domestic weddings this year,' she said. 'We are fully booked from November to February. Destinations such as Mussoorie and Corbett are getting more popular and Rajasthan has more luxury hotels than before,' she added. Nidhi Sahi, founder of Enjay Events, said more luxury hotel launches are also boosting prospects for wealthy Indians looking at hosting weddings in the country.'The season usually kickstarts from November, but we are planning for an October wedding at a luxury hotel in Rajasthan. People seem to be considering hotel prices as well besides the muhurat dates,' she added. The wedding season is shaping up very strongly for the coming quarter, said Vishrut Gupta, general manager at Fairmont Udaipur Palace, the property launched last month by Accor. 'All auspicious dates are already sold out, and we are even seeing strong demand for non-auspicious dates, as many couples now prefer those months for personal reasons,' he added.

Govt plans factory clusters, big reforms to boost economy amid US tariff jolt
New Delhi: The government is weighing new measures to boost manufacturing while exploring alternative markets to offset the impact of US tariffs and make Indian products more competitive globally, according to two people familiar with the matter. The proposals under discussion include interest subventions, the development of manufacturing clusters near infrastructure hubs, and measures to attract more private capital, the people cited earlier said on the condition of anonymity. The measures are also expected to focus on creating jobs, boosting exports, and strengthening domestic consumption. 'Beyond targeted incentives, the government is weighing structural reforms, ranging from tweaks in the GST (goods and services tax) framework to fresh manufacturing pushes, to raise the sector's weight in GDP," said the first person. 'Importance is also being given to sectors like engineering, electronics, textiles, steel, and construction, with a sharper focus on 'Make in India' and 'Vocal for Local.' New PLI (production-linked incentive) schemes for heavy machinery in mining and construction are also under discussion to curb import dependence," this person added. Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a Reform Task Force in his Independence Day speech on 15 August, aimed at driving next-generation reforms to steer India toward a $10 trillion economy by 2047. India's manufacturing sector, which accounts for about one-sixth of the economy, is projected to expand by 3.8% in fiscal year 2026 (FY26), slower than the 4.3% estimated for FY25, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). The deceleration reflects the impact of US tariffs, moderating domestic demand, and a high base effect, with some sub-sectors expected to cool after last year's unsustainably strong growth. The US has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods entering the world's largest economy. The spokespersons of the ministries of finance, and commerce, and the Prime Minister's Office didn't respond to emailed queries. Meanwhile, new PLI schemes aimed at reducing import dependence have also been discussed. The Centre is looking to fire up manufacturing activities, a crucial engine of economic growth, the second person said. 'The government is also exploring the creation of factory clusters strategically located near major infrastructure projects, such as roads, railways, and ports, to create manufacturing hubs that boost logistics efficiency and generate large-scale employment," this person added. 'These clusters are aimed at raising manufacturing's share in India's GDP. Linking these clusters with key infrastructure projects will help create seamless value chains, drawing both domestic and foreign investment and giving a strong push to the economy," the person said. 'The cluster-based approach to manufacturing, where firms and industries operate within an integrated ecosystem, rests on strong theory and is backed by compelling global evidence," the person added. Experts say the government is adopting a broad-based strategy to strengthen Indian manufacturing and boost global competitiveness, with an emphasis on scale, value addition, and market diversification to reduce vulnerability to tariff shocks. 'The government is taking a comprehensive approach to strengthen fiscal measures, such as targeted incentives and credit support, which are being matched with non-fiscal steps, including logistics upgrades, regulatory simplification, skilling programs, and increased investment in research and innovation," said Hardik Shah, partner, Deloitte India. 'These initiatives are designed not merely as quick fixes but as part of a long-term vision of Viksit Bharat to build resilience, reduce external dependence, and position India as a reliable, trusted, and globally competitive manufacturing hub," Shah added.
