Bhubaneswar: Around 10 metric tonnes of Amrapali mangoes from Dhenkanal were exported to European markets, including UK and Italy, last week. With over 100 women mango farmers trained on export standards, the development is poised to transform local livelihood options through global trade, official sources said.
"Five metric tonnes of Amrapali mangoes were shipped from Dhenkanal to England in the last three days. Odisha's fruits and vegetables exports are gaining global momentum. New destinations — Rome, Venice, Birmingham — and products such as jackfruit, drumstick, wood apple and ice apple are growing the export basket," said Arabinda Padhee, secretary, agriculture and farmers' empowerment department.
The capacity-building programme by the Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), in association with consulting firm Grant Thornton Bharat, helped the farmer producer organisations (FPO)s in addressing post-harvest challenges and enhancing export readiness.
"More than 33 FPOs across eight districts in Odisha have benefited, with support extended to over 100 women farmers on best practices, including sorting, grading, cleaning, packaging and storing to maintain international export quality," said Sambit Sasmal, an agri-export consultant.
State govt also provided interventions like subsidies for coolers and plastic crates, transit and storage rent assistance, and support for value addition, branding and marketing.
"The knowledge has freed us from depending on local dealers who offered low prices. Now we pluck and package as per international standards and connect directly with global buyers," said Jyotirmayee Pradhan, a mango farmer from Dhenkanal.
The woman farmers said they get around 10 times more price from exporting mangoes to global markets compared to the price locally. Dhenkanal alone has 9.34 hectares of mango cultivation, and its potential for premium quality exports is being tapped under the initiative.
Last year, mangoes from a local FPO were exported to Dubai. This year, around 50 tonnes are expected to be exported to global markets by June.
"The export opportunity has increased our earnings 10-fold. Odisha's women mango farmers are no longer just cultivators but are emerging as key players in international agri markets," said Pradhan, joined by Padmini Sahoo, a board member of FPO, during the recent export consignment dispatch.

Auto companies face shortages due to China's rare earth restrictions

Automakers and their suppliers are facing shortages due to restrictions on Chinese exports of rare earths, minerals and magnets, an issue that has forced some to shut down production of certain models. Rare earth magnets are used in motors that run electric vehicles and other car parts such as windows and audio speakers. These companies have paused production or warned shortages were affecting their supply chains: PRODUCTION SUSPENDED Ford shut down production of its Explorer SUV at its Chicago plant for a week in May because of the rare earths shortage. Suzuki Motor suspended production of its flagship Swift subcompact from May 26, citing a shortage of components. It expects a partial restart on June 13, with full resumption after June 16. Two people familiar with the matter said the suspension was due to China's restrictions. Suzuki declined to comment on the reason. Several European auto supplier plants and production lines have been shut down because of a rare earth shortage, Europe's auto supplier association CLEPA said on June 4. SUPPLY CHAIN CONCERNS Indian automaker Bajaj Auto warned that any further delays in securing the supply of rare earth magnets from China could "seriously impact" EV production by July. Auto parts maker Bosch said bottlenecks in the supply of rare earths were affecting its suppliers, who had to furnish a lot of detailed information to get export licences. BMW said a part of its supplier network was affected by the shortage, but that its own plants were running as normal. Maruti Suzuki India's top-selling carmaker, said there was no immediate impact, and that it was in talks with the government on the matter. German auto supplier ZF said it sees the effect of a rare earths shortage on some of its suppliers, although it does not procure the raw materials itself.

Portugal considers sweetening incentives for Golden Visa program

Live Events Less than two months after Spain scrapped its golden visa due to concerns about its effect on the housing market, Portugal is considering whether to sweeten its golden visa program and make a special tax regime for expatriates even more of the Presidency Antonio Leitao Amaro said in an interview that the measures being discussed would aim to bolster foreign investment and lure global talent to Portugal's declining to provide specifics, he said the goal was to burnish Portugal's image as an 'investment destination.'(Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates)Portugal's golden visa, among the most popular in Europe, offers non-Europeans a fast-track to residency through options including a minimum €500,000 ($572,780) investment in eligible funds. New Portuguese residents may also be eligible for a 20% flat tax on local income and a ten year exemption on most foreign to the golden visa and tax programs, Amaro said that the government is looking into organizing them in 'a more effective and economically efficient way' while ensuring that any changes are 'economically and socially fair.'Portugal's approach stands in contrast to not only Spain, which scrapped its golden visa program in April over complaints that it was driving up housing prices, but also to other European nations. Malta, Ireland, the Netherlands and Greece have all either ended or tightened the rules around their golden visa or equivalent programs in recent has risen for Portugal's golden visa, which only requires participants to spend about a week per year in the country. Golden visa approvals also rose 72% last year to a record 4,987 from the previous year, according to the country's immigration agency AIMA. Since the program launched in 2012, Americans have been among the top three recipients of golden visas along with Chinese and Brazilian whose center-right government won a second mandate in an early election last month, said there were no plans to scrap or 'demonize' the golden visa. That's a reversal from the previous socialist government, which removed real estate investment as a basis for golden visa eligibility in 2023 as a way to fight speculation in the housing market, where prices have surged to record highs. It previously threatened to scrap the program entirely.'There's no plan to end it. It's not on the table,' said Amaro. He said AIMA is working on clearing a backlog of almost 45,000 golden visas applications currently awaiting review.'We expect that by the end of the year this process will be largely taken care of,' he added.
