When 'Eat, Pray, Love' author Elizabeth Gilbert drew the line between being 'childlike' and 'childish'. Why it could change your life?
Elizabeth Gilbert's conversation with Marie Forleo in an old podcast spotlighted the powerful distinction between childlike wonder and childish entitlement. According to Gilbert, being childlike fuels creativity and resilience, while being childish breeds frustration and blame.
It's not every day that a bestselling author reframes something as fundamental as your relationship with wonder. But in a quietly powerful moment on The Marie Forleo Podcast back in 2015, Elizabeth Gilbert—yes, the Elizabeth Gilbert of Eat, Pray, Love fame—did just that. She wasn't selling a book, planning another world trip, or decoding spirituality this time. Instead, she was decoding you. Or more precisely, the part of you that still believes in magic—but often gets confused about how to use it in the real world. 'You have to be childlike in the pursuit of your life, but you cannot be childish,' Gilbert said, with the kind of clarity that stays with you. Her voice didn't preach, but it pressed gently—like someone holding up a mirror and asking you to really look.
Being childlike , she explained, is about wide-eyed wonder. It's a return to awe, curiosity, and the ability to greet each moment as if it's the first of its kind. In contrast, being childish is what happens when entitlement kicks in: 'I didn't get what I wanted, so I quit.' It's a tantrum dressed up as adult disappointment.
At a time when burnout is chronic and cynicism trendy, Gilbert's insight is a gentle rebellion. 'I believe you can be childlike and mature at the same time,' she said, inviting us all to carry a backpack filled with both wonder and wisdom.
Gilbert's reminder couldn't be timelier. In an age of productivity hacks and personal branding, we often forget the original joy of learning, trying, failing, and laughing through it all. Life, after all, isn't a performance—it's a practice. And maturity, Gilbert suggests, doesn't have to mean losing your sense of wonder. It means anchoring it in responsibility.
'You can embody both childlike wonder and mature responsibility simultaneously,' she said. That line alone is worth framing on a wall—or better yet, carrying in your heart. So often, the narrative of adulthood is synonymous with loss—loss of spontaneity, loss of playfulness, loss of belief in the unseen. But Gilbert argues for a reunion. That your ability to marvel is not childish. In fact, it's one of the most profound tools for resilience, reinvention, and even healing.
Let's not forget who's speaking here. Elizabeth Gilbert isn't merely a memoirist. Her life and work—spanning from fiction and essays to the deeply personal Big Magic —have consistently nudged readers toward self-discovery without shame or fluff. She's traveled the world, challenged societal norms, and stood vulnerable in front of millions of readers. Her words don't just sound good—they come from a life tested by grief, growth, and global adoration. When she talks about 'being ready to be amazed,' it's not just romantic rhetoric. It's a daily discipline. A conscious uncynical stance in a complicated world.
Gilbert's insight begs a question worth asking yourself every morning: Am I approaching this day with childlike wonder or childish resistance?
Are you letting awe lead you through your creative blocks, your life transitions, your hardest conversations? Or are you throwing tantrums about what you didn't get, whom the world didn't give you, and why things aren't fair?
In an age when personal growth often sounds like a self-help algorithm, Elizabeth Gilbert gives us something beautifully analog: a human reminder that we don't have to choose between growing up and staying enchanted. We can do both. And maybe, just maybe, that's where the real magic begins.

Milwaukee man watched creepy Netflix episode on first date, then killed teen the same way
A Wisconsin man was found guilty on Saturday of killing and dismembering the body of a 19-year-old student on their first date after the two watched a Netflix documentary with an eerily similar theme. 34-year-old Maxwell Anderson killed Sade Carleena Robinson, a criminal justice student, in April 2024 murder after the two met for dinner. They went out to a restaurant and bar before Anderson invited her back to his Milwaukee home. This was the last time she was seen alive. The next day, she did not show up to work at a local pizzeria and was reported missing. The police checked her home and found no trace of her. Police found a leg that matched her DNA, along with other body parts like a foot and human flesh scattered throughout the city. Prosecutors showed bloodied photos recovered from Anderson's phone to prove he was the killer. The images, initially deleted by Anderson, showed him holding one of Robinson's chopped-off breasts. Describing it as 'his trophy', juror Melissa Blascoe told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the pictures will be in her mind "for quite some time.' The jury was also told that Anderson turned on a Netflix animated series named 'Love, Death & Robots" the night he brought Robinson home. One of the episodes in the series showed a dismembered corpse, which was discovered on the beach. Police also discovered a 'sex dungeon' in Anderson's home with "a sex sling, restraints and handcuffs." The photos found on the phone physically affected people in the courtroom, some of whom were shaking and crying, Blascoe added. Anderson is believed to have spent months planning the murder, even preparing a space lined with plastic sheeting. According to Associated Press, surveillance video shows Anderson driving Robinson's car to a county park near Lake Michigan. It is here that he cut her body into pieces, prosecutors argued, before setting her car on fire and taking a bus back to his apartment. The 15-member jury took 45 minutes to reach a guilty verdict. Anderson has been found guilty of first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, hiding a corpse and arson. No motive behind the killing has been revealed yet. Anderson faces a mandatory life sentence on August 15.

Is Xavier Legette's steamy kiss with GloRilla a PR stunt or a real love story in the making?
Xavier Legette is rumored to be dating Grammy-nominated rapper GloRilla (Getty Images) NFL wide receiver Xavier Legette is used to making headlines with his performance on the field, but lately, it's his off-field moves that have fans buzzing. The Carolina Panthers' rising star has stirred up major attention after appearing as rapper GloRilla's love interest in her latest music video 'Typa. ' From their sultry bedroom scenes to the chemistry they radiated on camera, fans are left wondering—are these two simply collaborators, or is there something more? What's really going on between Xavier Legette and GloRilla after that passionate on-screen kiss? Xavier Legette, known for his Southern charm, viral accent, and unapologetically bold style, isn't new to the social media spotlight. But this time, it's not about his unique personality or his love for raccoons—yes, really—it's about the steamy visuals shared with the Grammy-nominated rapper. Featured on the cover art of 'Typa,' Legette is seen getting extremely close with GloRilla, setting the tone for a music video that's intimate, eye-catching, and loaded with relationship rumors. GloRilla – Typa (Official Music Video) In the video, which dropped Friday morning, the 24-year-old NFL wideout and the 'Tomorrow' hitmaker take their roles beyond surface-level flirtation. At one point, GloRilla, clad in white lingerie, shares a passionate kiss with a shirtless Legette in what looks like a heated bedroom rendezvous. This scene—arguably the most talked-about part—has viewers speculating whether the duo's chemistry is strictly professional or crossing into something personal. Adding more intrigue to the storyline is R&B icon Keyshia Cole, who makes a cameo during a mid-video conversation with GloRilla. Given that 'Typa' samples Cole's classic track 'Love,' her presence adds nostalgic weight and another layer of authenticity to the video. But for many, it's Legette and GloRilla who have stolen the show. What has added fuel to the romantic speculation is the fact that neither GloRilla nor Legette has publicly addressed the nature of their relationship. Legette, who just wrapped a stellar rookie season with 49 receptions, nearly 500 receiving yards, and four touchdowns, has kept his personal life under wraps since his 2024 draft into the NFL. Similarly, GloRilla has rarely let fans in on her private affairs—until now. 'The lyrics of 'Typa' talk about her love for a country man with, uh, other features (just listen for yourself),' which makes Legette a fitting choice for the role. Whether this is a savvy PR move blending music and sports for mutual clout, or the beginning of something genuine, remains to be seen. Either way, it's one of the most talked-about crossovers of the year. So, is it all a calculated move or the spark of something real? As fans wait for confirmation—serious dating rumors or just another collaboration?
