
Egypt explores ICT investment opportunities with Vodacom, Vodafone Egypt, and South African delegation
Amr Talaat, Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, held a high-level meeting with Shameel Joosub, CEO of Vodacom Group, Mohamed Kamal Abdallah, CEO and Managing Director of Vodafone Egypt, and a visiting delegation from South Africa, including representatives from the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) and the Government Employees Pension Fund.
The discussions focused on attracting new investments into Egypt's ICT sector and strengthening cooperation in telecommunications and information technology. Mohamed Shamoroukh, CEO of Egypt's National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), also participated in the meeting.
Key national initiatives in digital transformation, infrastructure enhancement, capacity building, technological innovation, and the growth of Egypt's IT and electronics sectors were at the forefront of the talks.
Talaat reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to fostering a conducive investment environment for ICT companies, emphasizing the role of regulatory frameworks that promote business growth while ensuring high standards of digital services. He stressed that the ministry's strategy hinges on close collaboration with the private sector in implementing national projects and advancing digital skills training.
He added that the ministry continuously engages with private firms to understand their workforce needs and to design tailored training programs aimed at equipping young Egyptians with market-relevant digital competencies.
Highlighting Egypt's strengths, Talaat pointed to the country's robust digital infrastructure, skilled talent pool, and global competitiveness in the outsourcing industry—factors that make Egypt an attractive destination for ICT investments. He also cited the ministry's work in the Decent Life initiative, where efforts are focused on enhancing telecom services, expanding internet access, upgrading postal services, and promoting digital literacy in underserved villages.
Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub expressed plans to expand the company's investments in Egypt, citing the improving investment climate and growing opportunities in digital transformation, infrastructure, and innovation. He noted that international investors regard Vodacom's presence through Vodafone Egypt as a testament to the group's leadership and its commitment to providing locally relevant, cutting-edge solutions.
Mohamed Abdallah, Vodafone Egypt's CEO, emphasized the company's pivotal role in attracting major investors to Egypt. Through its involvement in large-scale digital infrastructure projects and by facilitating co-investment opportunities with international players, Vodafone Egypt significantly contributes to increasing foreign direct investment and the telecom sector's share of the national GDP.
The South African investment delegation commended Egypt's evolving investment environment and expressed readiness to enter the Egyptian market, particularly in high-potential sectors such as data centers and cybersecurity.
The PIC is a wholly state-owned asset management company under the South African government. Recognized as one of the world's most successful asset managers and the largest in Africa, PIC oversees a diverse portfolio of investments across the continent and globally.

In statements to MENA on Monday, Fouad said that Sharm El Sheikh joined the ICLEI network, thanks to its sustainable development strategy, citing the injection of investments worth EGP 800 million in the new and renewable energy sources in the city to produce 51 megawatts of clean energy, the establishment of 145 kilometers of bike lanes, the introduction of a public bike-sharing system and robust solid waste management systems. She added the next phase will focus on activating the Sustainable Environmental and Social Strategic Development Strategy (SESSDS), through banning the use of single-use plastic in 50 hotels, empowering local community initiatives, especially in protected areas and coastal areas, and expanding partnerships with the private sector and international supporters.

Egypt, Nigeria FMs discuss economic ties and African security
CAIRO, June 7 (MENA) – Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty praised the strong ties and historical relationship between Egypt and Nigeria, highlighting a shared commitment to building on existing opportunities to advance cooperation—particularly in economic, trade, and investment sectors, with a focus on agriculture. During a phone call on Saturday with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Abdelatty pointed to the significant presence of Egyptian companies across Africa and voiced interest in exploring new joint investment opportunities that offer mutual benefit. The two ministers exchanged views on developments across the African continent and discussed ways to deepen cooperation and coordinate positions within the African Union to strengthen peace and security—especially in the Sahel region. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's readiness to support efforts to counter terrorism and extremism in light of security threats in the Sahel. He also emphasized Egypt's commitment to supporting Nigeria through capacity-building programs, including cooperation with Al-Azhar in combating extremist ideologies. The conversation also included an exchange of perspectives on Middle East developments, particularly the situation in Gaza. Abdelatty briefed his Nigerian counterpart on Egypt's ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, while condemning Israel's continued violations of international law and international humanitarian law and its actions against Palestinian civilians, which he said run counter to global calls for an immediate end to the war and unimpeded humanitarian access.

Egypt localizes Metro manufacturing, contracts for 189 cars for Alexandria Metro
CAIRO – 9 June 2025: An agreement was signed in Alexandria Governorate to localize and supply 21 metro train units, comprising 189 cars, for the Alexandria Metro project. The project which is currently in its first phase is expected to be extending 21.7 km from Abu Qir Railway Station to Misr Station in Alexandria. The project comes as part of the Ministry of Transport's comprehensive plan to establish a sustainable, green, and environmentally friendly mass transit network in Alexandria, along with plans to localize several industries, rely on local manufacturing, and reduce the import bill. The Metro project units are scheduled to be manufactured at the National Egyptian Railway Industries Company (NERIC). The metro and all types of trains are among the industries the Egyptian government is working to localize. The Ministry of Transport is cooperating with South Korea's Hyundai Rotem, through a partnership with (NERC), to establish a factory for the production of metro trains. The Ministry has contracted with the National Authority for Tunnels to manufacture and localize the production of 40 metro trains, totaling 320 cars, for the second and third lines of the Greater Cairo Metro. The factory is currently being constructed in East Port Said.
