Luka Modric pitched Rangers move by Davide Ancelotti and Real Madrid legend 'didn't say no'

Daily Record28-05-2025

A bombshell report claims Ancelotti has already pitched Modric on a potential move to Ibrox – and that he didn't say no
Rangers' next boss frontrunner Davide Ancelotti has reportedly asked Luka Modric if he would join him at Ibrox.
It comes with the Scottish Premiership club now facing a race against the clock to appoint the Italian - who is said to be being chased by three other "high level" clubs thus summer.

Carlo Ancelotti revealed that his son is in talks with multiple clubs over taking the top job in the dugout - and not just Rangers - with RB Leipzig thought to be a potential destination.

Writing for the BBC, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has claimed that Ancelotti Jr held talks with Ibrox chiefs in London last week with further discussions to follow in the coming days.
Record Sport revealed US tycoon Andrew Cavenagh - who is spearheading the San Francisco 49ers-backed takeover - is set to meet Ancelotti and Russell Martin face-to-face in the coming days as the search for a new boss reached an end.
It is claimed Ancelotti believes he is the club's first choice, and "a resolution could be reached in the coming days."

Balague notes that if a decision isn't reached by the end of this week or by the first week of June at the latest the club "risk missing out on Ancelotti" with other clubs showing interest.
It is claimed that Ancelotti Jr told the Real Madrid superstars - including Modric - about the prospect of becoming the next Rangers manager before he left the Bernabeu at the end of last season.
Reportedly Ancelotti asked the Croat - who is now out of contract - if "he'd fancy coming to Rangers and he didn't say no."

Carlos Alcaraz to defend French Open title in final as Lorenzo Musetti retires

Italian Musetti won the first set and was playing some exquisite tennis under the roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier. But the 23-year-old had treatment on his leg during a one-sided third set and called it a day after Alcaraz won nine games in a row with the score 4-6 7-6 (3) 6-0 2-0. There were echoes of a match here four years ago when Musetti retired against Novak Djokovic at 4-0 down in the fifth, later saying he was not injured but that he quit because he was 'not able to win a point'. Alcaraz, who will bid for a fifth grand slam title on Sunday, said: 'It is never great getting through like this. 'Lorenzo is a great player. He has had an incredible clay season. He's one of the few players who has achieved the semi-finals. I wish him all the best and a quick recovery. 'The first two sets were really tough. I had chances to break his serve in the match and I couldn't make the most of it. 🧡 — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 6, 2025 'He was playing great tennis. When I won the second set, there was relief. In the third I knew what I had to do – pushing him to the limit and trying to be aggressive. 'I was more calm and I could see this more clearly and I could play great tennis.' An exciting match looked on the cards when at 5-4 Musetti, who had not previously threatened the Alcaraz serve, suddenly broke to take the first set. Alcaraz served for the second set but the tension he was feeling was palpable as Musetti broke straight back. A sad ending to a thrilling encounter 💔 Alcaraz is back in the Roland-Garros final as Musetti is forced to retire. #RolandGarros — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 6, 2025 However, Alcaraz reset in the tie-break and, although Musetti saved two set points, he dumped a third into the net. Musetti planted his hand onto his face after a bad miss handed the initiative to Alcaraz, who grabbed the early break in the third. Suddenly the shackles were off for Alcaraz while Musetti was labouring, winning just five points as the set disappeared over the horizon. The eighth seed had received treatment on his left leg but was still clearly hindered and when Alcaraz broke for 2-0 in the fourth, he decided he had had enough.

Rangers full-back 'set' for English Premier League move

The 16-year-old has risen through the academy ranks at the Ibrox club and turned out for the under-18s this season. Read more: He is now said to be on his way to join Newcastle, with a medical in the works for Goodbrand, who will initially join up with the club's academy, claims the Daily Mail's Craig Hope. There is also believed to have been interest from abroad in the teenager. 🚨 EXC: Newcastle are set to sign Oliver Goodbrand from Rangers. Highly rated 16-yr-old left back who had interest from abroad. Due on Tyneside for medical. Will go into the academy next season #nufc — Craig Hope (@CraigHope_DM) June 6, 2025 News of Goodbrand's exit comes as Rangers' interest in Conor Coady emerges. The Rangers Review revealed earlier today that the Ibrox club are considering a move for the England international following Russell Martin's appointment as head coach. Coady has played 10 times for his country and could replace Robin Propper, who is likely to leave amid interest from Dutch outfit FC Twente. "There are a few positions where we'll need to strengthen fairly quickly and fairly early on," new boss Martin recently told Sky Sports. "I'm also willing to be surprised and I'm open to being surprised by some of the players we have here. "I think the way we're going to try and work and play is going to give them the best chance to show us what they've got and to give us the best version of themselves and hopefully one or two surprises. "We'll need some help before that game for sure, but until we get in here and assess everyone, how many we'll need before the game or how realistic that is because football and the business and transfer window can be difficult. "I'm pretty sure by then we'll have one or two people [in], to help us add to the group."

Tottenham Hotspur have explained their decision to sack manager Ange Postecoglou despite leading them to Europa League glory. The former Celtic boss was axed on Friday evening in a 368-word statement - with Spurs saying it is 'one of the toughest decisions' they have made. While Postecoglou led the club to a European trophy, Tottenham's performance in the English Premier League was deemed unacceptable, finishing 17th - one place above the relegation zone. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Postecoglou had delivered on his promise of 'always' winning in his second season thanks to the 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao on May 21, etching the Australian's name into the history books as only the third Spurs boss to taste European success and the first in 17 years to lift silverware – provoking an outpouring of affection from a previously split fanbase. Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by Tottenham Hotspur. | Getty Images While Postecoglou - appointed in June 2023 after landing a treble and a double following two trophy-laden seasons at Celtic - divided opinion across two years in England and attracted criticism, his San Mames triumph last month has not earned him a third season at the helm. Postecoglou even delivered a mic-drop moment during a euphoric open-top bus parade in front of an estimated 220,000 people when he declared 'season three is better than season two', but chairman Daniel Levy had other ideas and has dismissed the man to deliver him a much-craved trophy. A statement from Tottenham read: 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Achievement will live with us forever' 'Ange joined us from Celtic in the summer of 2023 and oversaw a period of change on the pitch, returning us to the attacking brand of football that has traditionally been associated with the Club, while writing a new chapter in our history by leading us to UEFA Europa League glory in Bilbao last month - an achievement that will live with us all forever. 'We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw. 'However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances - injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph. Ange Postecoglou guided Spurs to the Europa League. | Getty Images 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home. 'News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course.' Next Spurs manager favourite Brentford boss Thomas Frank has been installed as the bookmakers' favourite to replace Postecoglou, who departs following a rollercoaster ride in his first Premier League role. Postecoglou released a statement via his agency CAA Base, saying: 'When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime.
