Dan Purdy joins Rangers revolution as transfer guru appointed by old Everton pal Kevin Thelwell
The pair worked together at Goodison Park and the news comes hot on the heels of Record Sport exclusively revealing Nils Koppen had left Rangers are set to appoint Dan Purdy as the club's new technical director after Nils Koppen's shock exit. Record Sport broke the story that Koppen is on his way out just two days after the 49ers-backed takeover was confirmed, with the new owners already shaking up the setup behind the scenes. New chairman Andrew Cavenagh promised a bold new era and Koppen, who only arrived last year was promoted to the role of technical director despite overseeing a shaky summer of recruitment, is vacating his role. That leaves a key role open and they've turned to former Everton chief Purdy to fill it. Purdy has a working relationship with Kevin Thelwell, who has been announced as the new sporting director at Ibrox, from their time together at Everton. Everton had hoped to keep Purdy in his post but the 31-year-old is following Thelwell to become a key figure in the 49ers era at Ibrox. Purdy has been involved in a number of analytical and scouting roles in England and was brought to Everton from Liverpool as a match analyst in 2014. He rose up through the scouting department and had been head of scouting at Goodison Park since March 2022. But now he's set to take on a new challenge at Rangers. There might just be one Rangers manager candidate no one's talking about and it wouldn't surprise me if it came out soon
It looks like Ancelotti vs Martin but could there be a horse in the race that no-one knows is running? It looks like Davide Ancelotti vs Russell Martin at this stage – but don't be surprised if someone new emerges from the cold and snatches the Rangers job over the next few days. That was the warning from our man Scott McDermott on Hotline Live as he teased a 'new name' could come to the fore over the next few days. The hunt for the next boss at Ibrox has been one full of twists and turns. Interim boss Barry Ferguson was among the early frontrunners, and since then it's veered wildly between Steven Gerrard, Russell Martin and current bookies' leader Davide Ancelotti. It's all happening against the backdrop of the San Francisco 49ers-backed takeover which only complicates matters further, but the noises suggest the search for the next boss is going on independent of that and could even conclude before the American investment is rubber-stamped. As for who it will be, our man McDermott, who has been inside the hunt from day one, reckons Ancelotti is the favourite for good reason. But he also wouldn't be surprised if an entirely new name emerged to blow it apart over the next few days. He said on tonight's Hotline Live: "It would not surprise me if, over the next few days, a new name emerged. Someone that's maybe not been mentioned." Keith Jackson then followed up: "A horse that no-one knows has been running?" before McDermott continued: "Pretty much. My belief at the moment is that Ancelotti would be the favourite for a variety of reasons. "This has been so topsy-turvy, so hard to get a handle on, that nothing would surprise me. And if another name emerged in the next couple of days, it certainly wouldn't surprise me." Russell Martin can bring £15m Rangers transfer plan to summit with takeover king but deals hinge on one condition
The search for the next Ibrox boss is nearing an end with Davide Ancelotti and Martin in the running Rangers next boss contender Russell Martin could have an early transfer plan to present to takeover kingpin Andrew Cavenagh this week. The US tycoon - who is spearheading the San Francisco 49ers-backed takeover - is set to meet Davide Ancelotti and former Southampton boss Martin face-to-face in the coming days as the search for a new boss reaches an end. Record Sport previously revealed that Maurice Ross would be Martin's right hand man if he lands the job - and a potential transfer strategy may be falling into place at Rangers in the event that management team is appointed. suggest that Martin is keen on a reunion with Cameron Archer at his next club amid links with the Ibrox hot seat and Leicester City. The England youth international - who was previously on Rangers' radar back in 2022 - only made the move to St Mary's last summer in a £15million move from Aston Villa. However, after Martin was shown the door in the midst of the relegation scrap, Archer failed to find regular game time and was close to a loan switch to Leeds United in January. After his arrival on the south coast, Archer admitted that the style of play from the boss was a huge factor in leaving Villa Park for the club. He said: "I'm really excited to be here. I had a good chat with the gaffer. Obviously, he told me everything I needed to hear. 'That was one of the main reasons why I'm here, his playing style, his coaching and trying to improve me as a player." The gaffer also made it clear that he was a huge admirer, stating: 'Cameron is a really exciting young talent with huge potential to improve. 'He's a constant threat with his pace and ability to score goals, and will have learned a lot from playing regularly in the Premier League last season." But things have turned sour for the 23-year-old - and speaking before the end of the campaign he left the door open to a fresh start. He told the Daily Echo on January interest from Leeds: "I came here this summer and wasn't expecting to leave, but talks were ongoing outside of football. "I come to training every day, and if it happens, it happens." A reunion with Swansea centre-back Harry Darling could also be on the cards. He is out of contract this summer - and has already been signed twice by Martin at MK Dons and then to the Welsh side. Wales Online claim that Darling is now "close" to deciding his future with Swansea offering him improved terms - but confidence is said to have "waned" over an extension. Both deals would like require big money to be spend on transfer fees and wages - and could hinge on 49ers Enterprises backing the Scottish Premiership side with big money when they take control. Luka Modric pitched Rangers move by Davide Ancelotti and Real Madrid legend 'didn't say no'
A bombshell report claims Ancelotti has already pitched Modric on a potential move to Ibrox – and that he didn't say no Rangers' next boss frontrunner Davide Ancelotti has reportedly asked Luka Modric if he would join him at Ibrox. It comes with the Scottish Premiership club now facing a race against the clock to appoint the Italian - who is said to be being chased by three other "high level" clubs thus summer. Carlo Ancelotti revealed that his son is in talks with multiple clubs over taking the top job in the dugout - and not just Rangers - with RB Leipzig thought to be a potential destination. Writing for the BBC, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has claimed that Ancelotti Jr held talks with Ibrox chiefs in London last week with further discussions to follow in the coming days. Record Sport revealed US tycoon Andrew Cavenagh - who is spearheading the San Francisco 49ers-backed takeover - is set to meet Ancelotti and Russell Martin face-to-face in the coming days as the search for a new boss reached an end. It is claimed Ancelotti believes he is the club's first choice, and "a resolution could be reached in the coming days." Balague notes that if a decision isn't reached by the end of this week or by the first week of June at the latest the club "risk missing out on Ancelotti" with other clubs showing interest. It is claimed that Ancelotti Jr told the Real Madrid superstars - including Modric - about the prospect of becoming the next Rangers manager before he left the Bernabeu at the end of last season. Reportedly Ancelotti asked the Croat - who is now out of contract - if "he'd fancy coming to Rangers and he didn't say no." Rangers fans send takeover crew message on next manager as Ancelotti vs Martin throws up another dilemma
The race for the hot seat appears to be reaching an end - and the fans know who they want at the helm Rangers fans have spoken - and they have sent the incoming consortium a message on who they want to see as they next boss at Ibrox. American health tycoon Andrew Cavenagh is the driving force behind the San Francisco 49ers-backed takeover - and is set to jet into Glasgow for face-to-face talks with the contenders for the vacancy. Frontrunners Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin are set to make their pitches for what the future will look like should they land the job. Chief executive Patrick Stewart, sporting director Kevin Thelwell and 49ers technical director Gretar Steinsson have been leading the conversations with candidates - but now the Light Blues' diehards have had their say. And one name in the mix could throw up a headache for the next manager. The former Real Madrid coach has left the side of dad Carlo amid ongoing talks over taking a top job in Europe - and a whopping 46 per cent hope he replaces Philippe Clement permanently. However, Steven Gerrard's name won't go away - and despite appearing to be out of the running the title-winning boss still has some support in the Rangers ' legions. His vote share dwarves the backing issued to former Southampton gaffer Martin - with Gerrard taking 28 per cent of the share to Martin's nine per cent. Wildcard Brian Priske came out of the blue last weekend - but he won'r make it to the Blue Sea of Ibrox if the support have their say. He landed with just two per cent of the vote - while 16 per cent hoped to see an alternative candidate emerge before the final decision is made.
