Russell Martin can bring £15m Rangers transfer plan to summit with takeover king but deals hinge on one condition

Daily Record28-05-2025

The search for the next Ibrox boss is nearing an end with Davide Ancelotti and Martin in the running
Rangers next boss contender Russell Martin could have an early transfer plan to present to takeover kingpin Andrew Cavenagh this week.
The US tycoon - who is spearheading the San Francisco 49ers-backed takeover - is set to meet Davide Ancelotti and former Southampton boss Martin face-to-face in the coming days as the search for a new boss reaches an end.
Record Sport previously revealed that Maurice Ross would be Martin's right hand man if he lands the job - and a potential transfer strategy may be falling into place at Rangers in the event that management team is appointed.
suggest that Martin is keen on a reunion with Cameron Archer at his next club amid links with the Ibrox hot seat and Leicester City.
The England youth international - who was previously on Rangers' radar back in 2022 - only made the move to St Mary's last summer in a £15million move from Aston Villa.
However, after Martin was shown the door in the midst of the relegation scrap, Archer failed to find regular game time and was close to a loan switch to Leeds United in January.
After his arrival on the south coast, Archer admitted that the style of play from the boss was a huge factor in leaving Villa Park for the club.
He said: "I'm really excited to be here. I had a good chat with the gaffer. Obviously, he told me everything I needed to hear.
'That was one of the main reasons why I'm here, his playing style, his coaching and trying to improve me as a player."
The gaffer also made it clear that he was a huge admirer, stating: 'Cameron is a really exciting young talent with huge potential to improve.
'He's a constant threat with his pace and ability to score goals, and will have learned a lot from playing regularly in the Premier League last season."
But things have turned sour for the 23-year-old - and speaking before the end of the campaign he left the door open to a fresh start.
He told the Daily Echo on January interest from Leeds: "I came here this summer and wasn't expecting to leave, but talks were ongoing outside of football.
"I come to training every day, and if it happens, it happens."
A reunion with Swansea centre-back Harry Darling could also be on the cards.
He is out of contract this summer - and has already been signed twice by Martin at MK Dons and then to the Welsh side.
Wales Online claim that Darling is now "close" to deciding his future with Swansea offering him improved terms - but confidence is said to have "waned" over an extension.
Both deals would like require big money to be spend on transfer fees and wages - and could hinge on 49ers Enterprises backing the Scottish Premiership side with big money when they take control.

Greg Taylor 'set' Celtic contract decision timeline as Kosugi transfer succesion plan tacked head on

The left-back is set to become a free agent this month amid interest from Greek side PAOK PAOK have reportedly handed Greg Taylor a deadline of the end of June to decide his future. The Celtic left-back is weighing up his options ahead of his current Parkhead deal expiring soon. ‌ Boss Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of the fact he would like to see Taylor remain at the club and battle with Kieran Tierney for a starting spot next season. ‌ However, PAOK have been strongly linked with the 27-year-old as they prepare for their Europa League campaign - and are said to have offered two year contract with the option of a third that will trump his current Celtic salary. PAOK technical director Christos Karipidis has confirmed the club are waiting on a response from the Scotland cap - and Greek outlet Sport Dog now claim a deadline has been set for a decision. Taylor is currently in Dubai with his family on holiday following the end of the double-winning season. But after Razvan Lucescu returned to Thessaloniki this week to begin his plans for the new campaign, it is claimed that Taylor and Jonjoe Kenny - who has already reportedly received a contract offer - will be told that they have until the first pre-season training camp of the year to decide their future, which is set for the end of the month. Djurgarden wonderkid Keita Kosugi has been tipped as a potential successor should Taylor depart. The 19-year-old left-back has opened up on his targets for the future away from the Swedish side. ‌ But Djurgården's sporting director Bosse Andersson has told potential suitors the club are in no rush to cash-in on their prize asset. He told Expressen: 'It depends a bit on what happens. Money is not a problem. ‌ "We have built incredible security and have a flow with players we've previously sold. But that's not what determines whether we win matches — it's about making long-term and wise decisions. 'Three players have stood out in the European Games (Conference League). Keita Kosugi has been prominent and was in the team of the tournament. "But it's impossible to know what will happen. We are not negotiating at the moment, and as long as they are Djurgards players, that is our plan — though we do have a backup.' ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. 6 surging Rangers transfer headlines that go beyond Coady and Turgeman as £20m vision faces strict timeline

Russell Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell are scouring the globe for new recruits New Rangers boss Russell Martin is looking to add some new talent to the Ibrox dressing room before pre-season kicks off. That gives sporting director Kevin Thelwell until June 23 to snap up some new talent - with Conor Coady and Dor Turgerman on the agenda. ‌ Negotiations have started with Leicester City over a potential deal to bring in experience Coady - while rising talent Turgerman has opened the door to a move by admitting he is ready to leave Maccabi Tel Aviv. ‌ But with the American revolution in full flow at Ibrox, CEO Patrick Stewart has promised Martin he'll be handed a significant chunk of the £20million set to be injected in the Premiership giants by their new owners.. So, who else could be coming in? And who could be shown the door? Record Sport takes a look. Metinho Troyes' midfielder Metinho has caught Rangers' eye after a successful loan at FC Basel last term. But the Light Blues' face a battle to land the £5million-rated star as they prepare for his signature with the Swiss champions - who are looking to make the deal permanent despite not holding an option to buy. BaZ report it is "unclear" if Basel will be able to secure a return and meeting the valuation - leaving the door open for a move to Ibrox. Largie Ramazani Reports in Spain suggest Leeds United's Largie Ramazani is a target for the Light Blues' this summer - just a year on from his £10million move to Elland Road from Almeria. And former Leeds' goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to cut their losses with the winger, telling MOT Leeds News:" He's struggled to get in the side this season and I think at times, to his detriment, he's been an impact player off the bench. And I think that's maybe how the manager sees him. ‌ "And if they can get better than what they've got, which is what they have to do to stay in the Premier League, he could be one that's allowed to leave. 'He had a little spell of games, didn't he, in the Championship, but didn't play regularly, week in and week out. And he may be one where Leeds need to cut their cloth accordingly. He may be one that's allowed to move on.' Cyriel Dessers The striker has already revealed he has interest from Greece this summer - but while on international duty he has set himself the goal of scoring more for Rangers. ‌ When asked about his lack of recent caps for Nigeria, he said: 'I'm not the one making the choices. So, the only thing I can do is to perform well and score goals at my club … to ensure that I'm ready to be called up. 'Once I'm called upon, I should be able to show what I can do for the team. That I would have to do with goals, hard work and dedication,' ‌ Nedim Bajrami Nedim Bajrami will hope to impress his new boss when he returns for pre-season - with Record Sport understanding the Albanian is keen to stay in Glasgow and fight for his place in the team. After a disappointing first season in Scotland, reports in Albania suggest that clubs in Germany and Italy are on alert for a potential deal. Harry Darling He has already been signed twice by Russell Martin at MK Dons and then for Swansea City - but Record Sport understands Rangers are currently not in the race for his signature as his contract ticks down. Director of football Richard Montague says Swansea remains hopeful Harry Darling will sign a new deal with the club - despite reports that Norwich City are leading the race for the soon-to-be free agent. ‌ He told Wales Online: 'The ball is very much in Harry's court. "We made him what we thought was a very strong offer and I believe he would think is a very strong offer. Jamie Vardy It would be a landmark signing for the new owners - and Rangers are said to be among the club chasing Jamie Vardy after his Leicester City exit. ‌ The signing race for the 38-year-old appears to have lost a club - with Wrexham transfer consultant Les Reed telling the i: "Let's take an equivalent of Jamie Vardy. "Everyone thinks he's out of contract, there's no transfer fee, Wrexham could do that. You're talking about players who are on £140,000 a week. "We are a million miles away from that. There is a certain level of Premier League player who, if they are on £100k to 150k-a-week, are still going to get closer to that if they move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia than if they go to Wrexham." In the end, it came down to two; Russell Martin and Davide Ancelotti, and it was the former Gers defender that won the race. In a behind-the-scenes video posted by Rangers, Martin said: "It's been a long, long few weeks, it's been interesting, but it's been good. "It's brilliant to be back, I love the city and I love the people." Despite his short spell at the Ibrox club, Martin said: "I was desperate to come back at some point." He also admitted that the Rangers job was the job he was desperate for, despite interest from elsewhere. It looked at one point like he was set to join newly-relegated Leicester City, but that didn't amount to anything in the end. Martin arrived at Ibrox and immediately met CEO Patrick Stewart and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell. It was straight down to media duties for the new Ibrox boss, as he changed into his suit and was straight in front of the cameras. Reminiscing on his loan-spell at the club, he was surprised by one tweak in the dressing room, exclaiming: "There's cushions now, it was just benches when I was here!" Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager He teased the Ibrox faithful as he caught his first glance of Rangers' away strip, saying "That's the away kit? Very nice. "Kids are going to go mad for that one!" The new Gers boss met the media, and then went straight for a tour of Edmiston House, saying the club have "done brilliantly" with the club museum. Martin is set for a busy start to life as Rangers boss, navigating what is set to be a busy transfer window. He will have a tough task keeping midfield duo Mohamed Diomande and Nicolas Raskin with the Light Blues as interest in the pair grows. He is also under pressure to strengthen the squad as the Gers aim for some silverware. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
