'I'm a busy mum but make my own baby food pouches - you don't need to be top chef'

Following a shock BBC Panorama investigation into shop-bought baby food pouches, a busy mum has offered her top tips for making homemade pouch meals your little one will love, and it could help with fussiness in the long run
A busy mum swears by making up her own baby food pouches, and insists they're more cost-effective than the shop-bought variety.
As highlighted on last night's episode of BBC's Panorama, an investigation into baby food pouches found that six leading UK brands had 'misled' parents by selling products which are currently failing to meet babies' and toddlers' key nutritional needs.

The testing of 18 pouches found many to be low in vitamin C and iron, while some contained more sugar in a single pouch than a one-year-old should have in a day. Cookbook author Rebecca Wilson, who regularly shares her top tips and recipes on her popular Instagram page, isn't surprised by the findings.

Rebecca told the Mirror: "I think this investigation is fantastic for opening up an understanding of what's on the market. Maybe it'll help parents who maybe hadn't realised, to start looking at what the nutrition content is on the back of the package a bit more, rather than trusting straight away what is on the market."
Many time-pressed parents have long relied upon the convenience of readymade pouches, meaning this recent investigation may prove to be somewhat disheartening. However, you needn't be a top chef to prep your own pouches as part of your weekly routine, and it could well save you pennies.
Mum-of-one Rebecca, whose weaning cookbook, Easy Weaning, will be published in June, advised:" I completely get the whole time-saving aspect, and especially the pouches can be really useful if you're giving your baby's food on the go.
"My biggest tip would be to buy those reusable pouches. So if you are making a family meal, like a shepherd's pie or a spag ball, you can blend up, put it in the pouch, and you can take that out and about with you, and it will last for a couple of days in the fridge."
As explained by Rebecca, "any meal that you make for yourself as an adult can be served to your baby from six months old", and so you don't necessarily have to make up multiple family meals in one go. If it's too dry, then she suggests simply adding some water or some of your baby's usual milk to loosen up the consistency.

However, there are some things to bear in mind. First of all, it's important to leave out the salt when sorting your baby's dinner—and advises adding it to the main pot afterwards for the rest of the family. This is especially true for children under the age of 12 months, who can only have up to one gram of salt per day. And this may come from sources that you haven't considered.
Rebecca clarified: "Now that's not added salt, that's salt in all foods. So, say you're adding cheese to a meal, that can be salty. You know, there's naturally occurring salt in our food. So it's combined. And so don't add salt to food. If you want your food to be a bit salted, I always salt my own plate at the table."

When it comes to chilli in food, Rebecca also urges caution. She said: "Chilli isn't like a bad thing for little ones. It can just be a bit distressing for them. And you know, if it's really spicy and they don't enjoy the meal, it can put them off from eating in the future."
You also need to be careful with sugar when it comes to your baby's food, and this includes sugar from natural sources. Although she acknowledges that fruit is "fantastic food" for babies and children, when blended up, the natural sugars can be bad for their teeth, and so this should be minimised.
All this aside, however, Rebecca believes that "babies should be exposed to a variety of flavours" from the start of their weaning journey, and has encouraged fellow parents not to" shy away from seasoning food with lots of different spices and herbs."

She added: "Make food exciting, make it flavoursome so that they enjoy food and that you enjoy the food so that you can eat together as a family because that has so many benefits of eating together."
When it comes to her own daughter, who is now seven years old, Rebecca believes she has developed a much better relationship with food in the long run, thanks to being introduced to a variety of homemade foods early on as opposed to pouches.

As noted by Rebecca, the smooth texture of food sold in shop-bought pouches is quite different to that of homemade food, even when pureed. This means that when it's time to transition to proper food, the texture and need to chew can feel quite strange for little ones, potentially resulting in "more fussiness and more refusal."
Nowadays, more than ever parents are looking to make the budget stretch, and making your own pouches could be a great way of making those additional savings.
Rebecca advised: "Quite often, if you're making a big pot of spag bol, and then you blend it down, the price equivalent of buying those ingredients to the same amount of money that you spend on the same quantity of pouches, you're going to be saving money in that if you're making family meals and then using some of the extras for weaning on the go or saving some for the freezer."

When shopping for ingredients, there are also small but effective ways to trim your grocery bill in this regard. For example, Rebecca has suggested opting for chicken thighs over chicken breast, which, as well as being cheaper, are also less dry, making them better for weaning.
Of course, there is a reason why pre-made baby food pouches are so popular. Parents have limited time, and every second counts, especially if you're someone who doesn't take enormous pleasure in cooking. On this note, Rebecca said: "Plan ahead. Think about something that you feel like your kid is most likely to like because you don't want to go through the effort of making something, filling up reusable pouches, and doing the homemade thing straight away, jumping into it for the first time and then for it to be rejected.
"That can feel quite disheartening. So stick with something simple, something that you feel like is going to be really enjoyed. And maybe get the kids involved as well, and make an activity of it, and do it together so that it doesn't feel like it's another thing you added to the list, another job. It's something that you're doing as a family, it is a kiddie activity."

She told the podcast Bedside Manners with Dr Oscar Duke, that her mother intervened and said she should go to the doctors and get a blood test as she looked grey. While she was out filming, after she had the blood tests, Chloe received a number of missed calls from her father who then texted her to say a doctor had advised her she should got straight to A&E because her "blood was so low". "I went to the hospital. I had to have all of these checks and these iron infusions and that was where it started," she said. Chloe also revealed that she had probably her longest flare-up after filming a nerve wracking scene on Towie. The star first discovered blood in her stool, a symptom of ulcerative colitis, when she was 16. "I went to a college where I boarded when I was 16. "I was staying away from home and I was living in a student house and there was blood down the toilet", she told Dr Oscar Duke's Bedside Manners podcast. "I remember I told my mum and I was like, there's quite a lot of blood down the toilet. "I'm not really sure what's going on. She was of course like, go to the doctors. Towie's Chloe Meadows reveals 'real job' outside of show filming but fans aren't convinced "I went to the doctors, and they said that I would have to have a colonoscopy, which is a camera into the bowel." Chloe added: "At this point in my life, I had never really ever been to the hospital. I'd never been sick. "I'd never had any procedure or operation. I'd never been sedated. "I'd never had anything and the doctor referred me and I got this letter, and this is awful, but I got this letter and I just never went to the appointment because I was terrified. What causes ulcerative colitis and how is it treated? It is thought to be an autoimmune condition, which means the immune system wrongly tries to attack healthy tissue. The theory generally thought to be correct is that the immune system mistake 'good' bacteria inside the colon as a threat and attacks, causing the colon to become inflamed It is unknown why the immune system can behave in this way, but it is thought to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Medication can be taken to relieve symptoms and prevent them from returning. These include aminosalicylates, corticosteroids and immunosuppressants. An option for some people is to have colon removal surgery. "Then I ignored it and what would happen, which is what I realise now, is that I can go into remission, I can go into a flare-up in remission. "It would stop for periods of time so that the blood would go away. I'd be like, 'Oh, cool, it's gone away, I'm better. There's nothing wrong with me'. "I'd go through years where it wouldn't happen and then it would happen again, and then it would stop again. "I would probably lie to my mum about how much it would happen because she always pestered me about it and I was like, 'No, it's fine'. Chloe admitted she was scared of having any procedure done. "I was also scared of what they were going to tell me. I was just terrified, which is not really a reason not to go to the doctor, but I think that's just what I thought. "I was young as well, so I would forget when there wasn't blood down the toilet, I would completely forget." Ulcerative colitis is a long-term condition where the colon and rectum become inflamed, according to the NHS website. Symptoms include recurring diarrhoea, which may contain blood, extreme tiredness, loss of appetite and weight loss. Some people with ulcerative colitis may go for weeks or months with very mild symptoms, or none at all (remission), followed by flare-ups and relapses. Treatment options include corticosteroids, immunosuppressants and surgery.

New ‘Star Wars' cancer treatment which pulverises tumours with sound waves

The NHS is set to become the only health system in Europe to use ground-breaking histotripsy technology, which removes the need for surgery by firing pulses to form micro bubbles from gases A 'Star Wars' treatment which zaps hard-to-reach cancers using sound waves is being trialled on the NHS. The technology, called histotripsy, removes the need for surgery and instead fires pulses to form micro bubbles from gases within the tumour. These 'bubble clouds' expand and contract in microseconds to destroy the cancer cells. The targeted ultrasound technology currently only available in the US will now be trialled by the NHS on liver cancer patients in Cambridge. If successful regulators say it will be a 'a major step forward' which it is hoped could be used to destroy pancreatic and kidney cancers. ‌ ‌ The Government says Health Secretary Wes Streeting intervened to authorise controlled early access to the device, as part of a new Innovative Devices Access Pathway (ADIP) programme. Mr Streeting, who previously had kidney cancer, told the Mirror: 'I've slashed red tape, so NHS patients will be the first in Europe to benefit from a revolutionary and non-invasive liver cancer treatment – that uses ultrasound technology to destroy tumours - years earlier than planned. "Patients stand to see faster recovery times, fewer dangerous complications, and shorter hospital stays. We are slashing red tape, so game-changing new treatments reach the NHS front line quicker.' In contrast to invasive surgery, the targeted ultrasound can take just 30 minutes with 'limited or no pain' and involves a quick recovery. It destroys tissue at cellular and sub-cellular levels while avoiding the ionising damage of radiation or the heat damage from thermal treatments. The bubble clouds cause the cancerous mass to break apart, destroying tumor cells and leaving the debris to be eliminated by the immune system. ‌ US cancer expert Dr Jennifer Linehan, of St John's Cancer Institute, said the device could in future also be used to pulverise prostate and bladder cancers. She said: 'This technology kills tumours without even touching you. Sometimes when I'm talking to patients I tell them this is ' Star Wars technology' because there are no cuts, there's no poking, there's nothing that's going inside you from outside. It's all happening with a focused beam of ultrasound to destroy the tumours.' The first cancer patients in Europe to access the treatment under such a scheme will be treated for their liver cancer at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge this summer. The machine, manufactured by HistoSonics, is expected to be fully installed later this year, where it will be used initially to treat patients with primary and secondary liver tumours. Wider research on how this could potentially treat tumours in other organs is underway. ‌ James Pound, innovation director at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), said: 'We've shown we can get promising technologies to patients faster without compromising safety. It's a major step forward for patients with liver cancer and shows how the UK can be a frontrunner in supporting responsible innovation that meets real clinical need.' Patients undergoing histotripsy are given general anesthesia to control breathing and to minimize movements of targeted tumours An evaluation of the NHS pilot will be published later this year by the Department of Health and Social Care. Histotripsy has already been approved to treat liver tumors by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). ‌ Roland Sinker, Chief Executive of Cambridge University Hospitals said: 'Histotripsy is an exciting new technology that will make a huge difference to patients. By offering this non-invasive, more targeted treatment we can care for more people as outpatients and free up time for surgeons to treat more complex cases. 'The faster recovery times mean patients will be able to return to their normal lives more quickly, which will also reduce pressure on hospital beds, helping us ensure that patients are able to receive the right treatment at the right time.' ‌ Wes Streeting - Secretary of State for Health and Social Care As a cancer survivor, I know what an incredible impact medical technology can have. The Dancing On Ice judge visited a neonatal clinic for the first time since her daughter's traumatic birth, while supporting a UNICEF programme in Africa. Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse has relived the traumatic experience of giving birth to her baby early after jetting out 3,000 miles to west Africa to meet with mums nursing their premature little ones. The 34-year-old professional dancer returned to a neonatal unit for the first time since she went through a tough 16-hour labour with her daughter, who arrived two months early, weighing just 3lbs in 2023. Oti's baby girl spent the next six weeks in intensive care at University College London Hospital after she was born with an infection and the Strictly star also developed sepsis. Both baby and mum recovered but the Dancing On Ice judge revealed her intense trauma after visiting a UNICEF-funded specialist clinic in Ivory Coast Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) in Africa. ‌ In the city of Abidjan she witnessed how premature babies are receiving critical life-saving treatment and daily care including a UNICEF programme called "Kangaroo Mother Care" which promotes the importance of skin-on-skin contact. Opening up about her own traumatic experience, Oti said: 'I remember the only way I could touch my child and have skin-on-skin was through this glass window – there's no mother who wants to experience that.' ‌ According to UNICEF, an estimated 4.8 million children died globally in 2024 before reaching their fifth birthday, including 2.3 million newborns who died within the first 28 days of life, the Mirror reports. In Cote D'Ivoire, lack of access to specialised care is one of the reasons that prematurity is the leading cause of death for children under five. In Abidjan, the UNICEF team offers breastfeeding support clinics and regular check-ups until the babies are of age to attend school alongside locally made loin cloth slings, so mothers remain in close contact with their babies. ‌ At the hospital, Oti spoke with Ouattara, a mother whose first baby was born prematurely and needed critical care. Sadly, her baby died six days later due to the lack of access to specialised support. Thankfully, her second baby, Abdul, who was also born prematurely, was rushed to the UNICEF centre where they stayed for three weeks to get the care and attention they needed. ‌ Two years on, Abdul is a healthy and happy little boy. The Strictly star also visited a UNICEF-supported foster care home, where the organisation supports children providing food and ensuring they stay in education or have vocational training. ‌ There, she met Madame Massandje, who has been trained by UNICEF to identify kids living on the streets and offer them safety and shelter in her own home. Madame Massandje currently has 15 children in her care as a result - four girls and eleven boys aged three to fifteen. Speaking about her inspiring trip ahead of Soccer Aid for UNICEF, Oti said: 'Visiting Côte d'Ivoire with UNICEF UK showed me the first-hand impact of the importance of vital care for children and their parents - especially for those that are born prematurely. ‌ ‌ "My own baby was born prematurely, so seeing the work and meeting mums like Ouattara brought everything home. I know how vital that care and support is in those early days. Worldwide an estimated 4.8 million children died before reaching their fifth birthday in 2024 - deaths that were mostly preventable. "I also met incredible foster carers like Madame Massandje, who are changing children's lives and helping give them the start in life they deserve. These experiences showed me the real difference donations make. That's why I'm so proud to be part of Soccer Aid for UNICEF - to help give every child a safe, healthy start in life.' ‌ Oti's trip will be broadcasted in a UNICEF appeal film which will feature during Soccer Aid for UNICEF on Sunday June 15. It will be broadcasted on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player at 6pm. This year, thanks to the Children's Investment Fund Foundation, every donation you make to Soccer Aid for UNICEF will be doubled – up to £5 million.
