
What a Bojangles sale could mean for the restaurant's future
Why it matters: Bojangles is the place North Carolinians tell visitors they "have to try" while in the state. It's often the first stop for natives returning home, hungry and craving a taste of nostalgia.
In recent years, the brand has increasingly been meeting fans where they are, by opening more than 200 restaurants in other regions across the country, from Las Vegas to Dallas to Columbus, Ohio.
A sale as big as it's rumored to be would require Bojangles to rev up that growth, industry experts say.
Driving the news: The Wall Street Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter," first reported that the Charlotte-based company was working with investment bankers on a potential $1.5 billion sale. That's triple the $590 million private-equity firms Durational Capital Management and TJC paid for Bojangles in 2019, when they took the company private.
Reality check: Industry experts say the number may just be Bojangles shooting high.
"Bojangles "resonates strongly with its core audience," Billy Roberts, senior analyst with CoBank, says. "For it to support that valuation, it would have to continue a similar performance as it expanded nationally — even more nationally than it already is."
While Bojangles is popular in the South, it doesn't have the same national following as, say, a Whataburger.
John Gordon, principal at Pacific Management Consulting Group, says the $1.5 billion figure is inflated. "These numbers are strictly marketing numbers that the book runner — which is the firm that's trying to get other investors interested in this — they come up with."
Bojangles has declined to comment on the potential sale, saying it does not address rumors or speculation.
The Wall Street Journal also noted that Bojangles may ultimately decide not to sell.
By the numbers: Bojangles, founded in 1977, now has more than 830 restaurants in 20 states, up from over 600 stores in 12 states in 2019.
The chain has expanded to Texas and metros like Phoenix.
Opening a Bojangles costs between $2.6 million to $3.4 million, according to a 2023 franchise disclosure document. Gordon says that's a very high cost per store.
What they're saying: "Many North and South Carolinians have moved to other states, and when we come, they celebrate that Bojangles has made it to the new town," Bojangles CEO Jose Armario told Axios during a recent interview at the company's new south Charlotte headquarters.
Armario, who took the helm in 2019, says Bojangles has seen "tremendous success" in all its new markets.
"Last year, we outpaced our competition by 400 basis points," he adds.
Yes, but: Bojangles has expanded in the past with mixed results. For example, in 2016, a franchisee closed eight restaurants in Orlando after just a year.
The big picture: With the state of the chicken industry and the restaurant M&A world, it tracks that Bojangles would want to at least consider a sale now.
"The headline almost writes itself: Brands are striking while the iron — and the chicken — is hot," Roberts says.
U.S. chicken sales have been growing for two decades, outpacing beef due to its cheaper costs and versatility.
"Our founders were smart enough to know chicken was always going to be in demand," Armario says.
Zoom out: Dave's Hot Chicken shook the restaurant world recently when Roark Capital agreed to buy the fast-casual chain for around $1 billion. The restaurant, which started as a California parking lot pop-up and has expanded to Charlotte, is considered a leader in the nationwide hot chicken craze.
The average Dave's location does $3.1 million in sales annually, according to Nation's Restaurant News, citing Technomic. Bojangles tend to do over $2 million.
Other restaurants are hopping on the chicken trend. Taco Bell, for one, recently added nuggets to its menu.
What's next: As the market becomes saturated, analysts suggest Bojangles may need to follow the lead of Wingstop and Raising Cane's by innovating its menu.
Bojangles regularly introduces new products, like chicken and waffles, as well as its limited-time Bo-Rito breakfast wrap.
"If they don't come up with sauces and rubs and all that kind of thing in order to make it distinctive, then they're going to have a very slow way to go," Gordon says.

Deploying cash during a bear market can be difficult as fear sets in. It's smart to have a plan — don't enter the market all at once, and don't panic. Experts suggest buying quality dividend stocks and large-cap tech if a bear market comes around. If you've been building up a big cash reserve over the last few years, you're not alone. You're also probably not alone in wishing you'd had the money in stocks. Cash has generated meaningful yields since 2022 after the Federal Reserve went on a rate-hike spree, drawing record amounts into money market funds. The total value in money market funds — highly liquid, cash-equivalent assets that generate yield from short-term bonds — is at a record $7.3 trillion. About $2.1 trillion is held by retail investors. Even stock-investing icon Warren Buffett holds a record cash position worth nearly $350 billion as of March. But stocks have ripped higher in the meantime. The S&P 500 is up 80% since its October 2022 low. It's been difficult to know when to get into the market, though. With the stock market consistently hitting new highs and valuations historically elevated in recent years, you might have been waiting for a good opportunity to put that cash to work in equities, waiting for a dip to buy. If you missed the April plunge, you might still be doing so. It's not necessarily a bad approach. Goldman Sachs said this week that the chance of a stock-market pullback has jumped. In fact, stocks are so expensive that Vanguard said this mont that its ideal portfolio over the next 10 years is a very conservative allocation of 70% bonds and 30% stocks. The cheaper the entry point, the better the returns. But timing the market is tricky and something market pros usually advise against trying. No one knows how long a bull rally can go or how long an eventual pullback will last. That's why the best course of action is probably to dollar-cost-average, continuing to put money into the market at set intervals, whether the market is up or down. However, if you are resolved to waiting for a significant decline to enter the market, it's a good idea to have a plan set in place before that moment arrives. When and what to buy Though bear markets in recent years have been short-lived, the average bear market going back to 1932 has seen a 35.1% drawdown that lasts a year and a half, according to investment bank Stifel. So take it slow, says brokerage firm Charles Schwab. "Instead of going all in at once, one might consider buying small chunks at a time," Charles Schwab said in an August 6 post. But not too slow, said Hank Smith, the director and head of investment strategy at Haverford Trust. There's no way to tell when the bottom is in, so you want to start taking advantage of the pullback once it hits 10% correction territory, he said. It may hurt if the market ends up falling further than 10%, Smith said, but being indecisive about when to get in can result in missed opportunities. Remember the 19.9% decline in the S&P 500 from February to April? The pain was over in the blink of an eye, with the index back at all-time highs before the end of June — and the rally has been furious, with the market up 30% since April lows. So if the market does continue to drop, it's time to get even more aggressive, Smith said. "Let's say that correction morphs into a bear market of 20%, and now you're kicking yourself that you put any in at down 10%. You can't do that," Smith told Business Insider. "You have to say, 'Ok, this is another opportunity to tranche in again,' and probably with more than you did at down 10%." As for areas of the market to buy, it's difficult to know which sectors and themes will get beaten up the most. But Schwab said it's good to take a diversified approach and start buying all corners of the market. "Interestingly enough, traders can diversify their portfolios with as few as 12 stocks, targeting stocks in all major sectors," the firm said. "Although diversification doesn't eliminate the risk of experiencing investment losses, it can help increase the chances of capturing better-performing assets and avoid the risk of losing overall portfolio value to any single business, industry, or sector." Quality dividend stocks can also provide a good buffer to market losses, Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank said in a 2024 report. Smith said that economically sensitive sectors usually make for some of the best opportunities coming out of a recessionary bear market, as they dip during downturns and rebound when the economy recovers. Funds like the Fidelity MSCI Consumer Discretionary Index ETF (FDIS) and the Invesco Dorsey Wright Consumer Cyclicals Momentum ETF (PEZ) offer exposure to cyclical stocks. But he also said large-cap tech stocks are likely to drop the most because of how high their valuations are. If that's the case, it will likely be a good chance to add exposure to them, he said. "That's very common in high-growth stocks to have big sell-offs in what is a longer-term bull trend," Smith said. "That is where an investor with a lot of cash waiting for a significant decline in the market should look to." Cava Shares Crash. Should Investors Buy the Stock on the Dip or Run for the Hills?
Key Points Cava shares sank after its same-store sales growth slowed. The company still has a long expansion runway, and therefore, plenty of growth potential for the stock. 10 stocks we like better than Cava Group › Shares of Cava Group (NYSE: CAVA) plunged after the Mediterranean-themed restaurant operator's same-store sales growth slowed in its fiscal second quarter (ended July 13), missing expectations. The stock is now down nearly 40% year to date as of this writing. Let's dive into the company's latest results and prospects to see if investors should buy the dip or steer clear of the stock. Same-store sales growth slows After reporting double-digit growth in comparable-restaurant sales (comps) each of the past four quarters, Cava's growth slowed considerably in its fiscal Q2. Comps edged up just 2.1% with guest traffic largely flat. That was well below the 6.1% increase that analysts were expecting, based on market intelligence site StreetAccount's estimates, and a big slowdown from recent quarters. The company started the quarter strong, but once it lapped the introduction of its popular grilled steak a year ago, growth slowed. In response, Cava plans to push forward with more menu innovations, including the introduction of chicken shawarma in the coming weeks and cinnamon sugar pita chips. It said tests of chicken shawarma in select markets went well, and it expects the new item to help drive comps. Overall revenue for the quarter climbed 20% year over year to $278.2 million. It opened 16 new restaurants in the period, bringing its total to 398 locations, a nearly 17% increase compared to a year ago. It entered two new markets during the quarter, in Pittsburgh and Michigan. Management now plans to open between 68 to 70 new locations this fiscal year, up from a prior forecast of 64 to 68. Long term, management's goal is to reach at least 1,000 stores by 2032. Its restaurant-level margins (RLMs) came in at 26.3% in the quarter, down slightly from 26.5% a year ago. RLMs measure how profitable a chain's individual restaurants are before corporate costs, and they're an important restaurant industry metric. The company's RLMs just trail the 27.4% figure of Chipotle Mexican Grill despite having much lower scale than its larger rival. On the profitability front, Cava's adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) climbed 23% year over year to $42.1 million. The company also generated $98.9 million in operating cash flow in the quarter and free cash flow of $21.9 million. Management lowered its full-year comps outlook for the year, taking it from 6% to 8% growth down to a range of 4% to 6% growth. But it maintained its 2025 adjusted EBITDA outlook of $152 million to $159 million, and its RLM margin forecast of 24.8% to 25.2%. Should investors buy the dip? In hindsight, with the restaurant industry's comps growth slowing in general, combined with the lapping of the introduction of Cava's highly popular grilled steak, it may not be that big of a surprise to see the chain's comps growth slow dramatically. That said, it doesn't take away from the fact that Cava is still a highly popular concept. The company's biggest opportunity is still its ongoing expansion. With fewer than 400 locations, it has a long growth runway that it is able to self-fund. These are also highly productive stores with an impressive average unit volume of nearly $3 million and top-tier RLMs. Trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of nearly 123 and a forward price-to-sales ratio (P/S) of 7 based on 2025 analyst estimates, Cava stock is not cheap. However, if the company gets to 1,000 store locations in 2032, it could be generating close to $4.5 billion in revenue with consistent mid-single-digit comps growth. With Chipotle currently sporting a forward P/S ratio of 4.8, Cava stock has the potential to more than double over the next seven years if it were to trade at the same multiple that Chipotle does today. That's a strong outlook, and the restaurant chain could still expand beyond that point. As such, the stock's year-to-date slump does present an interesting opportunity.
