Outdated bus routes keep Trichy's intracity services poor

Time of India4 days ago
Trichy: Trichy city can boast the state's second largest and sophisticated Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur, but TNSTC's bus services connecting major destinations within the city have not evolved proportionally to meet the dynamic travel patterns of passengers.
Commercial streets, religious centres, and educational hubs in the city are not directly connected by city buses, forcing passengers to board multiple buses to reach destinations located within a 10-12 km radius.
People from K K Nagar and Ponmalaipatti, two densely populated and developing areas, lack direct buses to the IBT. Passengers heading to Lalgudi and Manachanallur towns have no direct buses from IBT either.
Instead, they commute to Chathiram bus terminus to reach those two towns. Kattur and Thiruverumbur, a developing commercial hub, are not directly connected by buses to Thillai Nagar, the city's major medical hub.
It's worth noting that the Trichy region of TNSTC Kumbakonam division operates 287 city buses.
"TNSTC should suggest new and high-demanding routes to promote public transport and prevent traffic congestion.

Aged people cannot board two buses to reach destinations within the city," Kallai Venkat, a frequent commuter, said. At least, 10 prominent destinations in the city and suburbs remain not directly connected by TNSTC, forcing people to opt for personal vehicles or auto rickshaws for daily commute.
While bus routes were not reorganised based on changing travel patterns in decades, TNSTC insiders blamed lack of adequate buses for the poor connectivity.
While Trichy city and the urban agglomeration population have breached 15 lakh, TNSTC has been operating the same 300-odd city buses in recent years. "Elcot IT Park has a four-lane road, but TNSTC fails to see the potential of operating new buses on new routes such as between Trichy airport and Thiruverumbur," R Thiruvenkadam, a road safety activist, added.
Bus enthusiasts opined that TNSTC Trichy region, being managed from the division's headquarters in Kumbakonam 100km away, is the main reason for the lack of innovative approach and periodical supervision to strengthen connectivity and modernise fleet.
A separate division for Trichy carving districts like Trichy, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur, and Pudukottai out of Kumbakonam division could streamline such lapses, the enthusiasts added.
A senior TNSTC official said, "Recently, we launched a new route connecting Panjapur with Samayapuram via Trichy-Chennai national highway. It is a hit among passengers. More such routes will be identified and proposed, and connectivity will improve gradually."

Hyderabad eyes nonstop Aussie leap: 40-fold passenger surge spurs airline interest in direct flights

HYDERABAD: Passenger traffic between Hyderabad and Australia has soared nearly 40-fold over the past four years, jumping from 3,500 travellers in 2021 to 1.5 lakh in 2024, amid stricter US travel norms. Be it visiting friends and relatives, student traffic, corporate travel, or increased tourism, air travel between Hyderabad and Australia has seen a sharp rise in the last few years. Additionally, there has been a rise in high-value leisure travel, further strengthening the market's appeal. This has led to a sharp increase in demand for business class and premium economy seats. While Melbourne and Sydney have been the top destinations, there is also a sharp rise in air travel to Australian cities like Brisbane, Perth, and instance, the number of passengers travelling between Hyderabad and Perth increased from 4,900 in 2022 to 9,500 in 2024, as shown by data from IATA. Countries and cities where riding public transport costs nothing

Free public transport, also known as fare-free public transit or zero-fare public transport, refers to systems where passengers can use buses, trams, trains, or other public transit without paying a fare. Instead, the cost is covered through national, regional, or local government funding, often via taxation, or sometimes through commercial sponsorship. In certain cases, passengers may be required to have a specific card which might be available for free or at a discounted rate. In other cities, public transport is free for a set period in order to get people used to new services or even permanently like there. Luxembourg On 29 February 2020, Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make all public transport completely free nationwide. The scheme covers buses, trams, and trains, and is available to both residents and visitors. This bold step was introduced to combat heavy road congestion and promote more sustainable modes of transport in a country with one of the highest rates of car ownership in Europe. The purpose of the measure is to make public transport more attractive in areas where populational density is higher, and also address the need to decrease reliance on private cars. Hasselt, Belgium The Belgian city of Hasselt became an early pioneer of zero-fare travel after abolishing public transport fares in 1997 . This led to dramatic results, which is that by 2006, ridership had increased up to 13 times compared to pre-1997 levels. This transformation positioned Hasselt as a model for how free transport can significantly boost public transport usage and reduce car dependency. Tallinn, Estonia Tallinn, Estonia's capital, switched to free public transport in 2013 following a public referendum. The policy applies to all registered residents, whereas this move was implemented to encourage more people to officially register in the city and contribute to its tax base. The results were impressive as it increased revenue from new registrations, which in turn helped support the costs of running the fare-free system. Washington State, USA In the 2020s, in Washington state, 14 rural transit systems adopted zero-fare policies, either permanently or through pilot programs. Also, from September 2022, all those aged 18 and younger were allowed to travel free on most local and inter-city transit systems. The program also covers inter-city Amtrak trains operated by the state and the Washington State Ferries system, making it one of the most extensive youth mobility initiatives in the United States. With a population of 1,420,000, the Ukrainian city's policy ensures that everyone can travel without paying a fare, improving accessibility across the city and helping residents navigate its extensive transport network. Belgrade, Serbia Belgrade introduced free local public transport in 2025 for its 1,380,000 residents. This measure is part of a wider plan to modernise the city's transport infrastructure, cut traffic congestion, and make urban mobility more inclusive.
