Stefanos Tsitsipas retires in first round due to injury; Valentin Royer advances at Wimbledon 2025
Royer led 6-3, 6-2 when Tsitsipas withdrew after 74 minutes. He was visibly suffering due to discomfort. The 26-year-old Greek struggled with his movement and serve, landing just 43 percent of his first serves. A medical timeout in the second set offered little relief, forcing Tsitsipas to end his Wimbledon campaign early. He was forced to leave with a 19-13 record for 2025.
Notably, last week, Jannik Sinner's coach, Darren Cahill, had pointed out Tsitsipas' back struggles during practice, hinting at the issue's severity.
For Valentin Royer, ranked No. 99 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, this victory was a career highlight. Competing in only his second Grand Slam main-draw match, the 23-year-old Frenchman made the best out of the match against Tsitsipas. Royer, who lost in the first round at Roland Garros last month, showcased composure and aggression in his Wimbledon debut.
'I'm just trying to stay focused and play my game,' Royer said post-match.
He will now be geared up to face compatriot Adrian Mannarino in the second round.
Coached by former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, Tsitsipas became the second men's seed to fall on Day 1, following Daniil Medvedev. His back injury raises concerns about his form, especially after a season of inconsistent results.
As Royer celebrates his breakthrough, Tsitsipas faces a recovery period, hoping to return stronger for the hard-court swing.
In the United States, matches will be available live on The Tennis Channel and ESPN. The viewers can also watch the live streaming on Fubo.
For viewers in India, StarSports Network will broadcast the matches on television. Additionally, live streaming is available on the JioHotstar application.

Aryna Sabalenka Outlasts Emma Raducanu To Enter Wimbledon Last 16
After knocking out local favourite Emma Raducanu, Aryna Sabalenka is now a red-hot favourite to win Wimbledon 2025. Aryna Sabalenka overcame a tough challenge from Emma Raducanu and a partisan Centre Court crowd to stay in the running for her first Wimbledon title on Friday. In an exhilarating match under the Centre Court roof, the world number one defeated the former US Open champion 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 in two hours, advancing to the fourth round. Sabalenka found an extra level when needed as the British player's form dipped slightly, avoiding the fate of many other top players at this year's championships. Though it is only day five of Wimbledon, just four of the top 10 women's seeds remain, with half of the men's top 10 also eliminated. 'I had to fight for every point like crazy," said Sabalenka, who has never gone beyond the semi-finals at the All England Club. 'I'm super happy with the win, of course. I'm super happy to see her healthy and back on track. I'm pretty sure that she will be back in the top 10 soon." A Challenging Atmosphere For Sabalenka The 27-year-old Belarusian commented on the challenging crowd atmosphere. 'What an atmosphere," she said. 'My ears are still hurting, honestly. It was super loud. Every time you were cheering her, I was trying to tell myself to just pretend that you were cheering for me. I had goosebumps." Raducanu, ranked 40th in the world, quickly showed she was not intimidated by her powerful opponent. Matching the three-time Grand Slam champion blow for blow, she secured the first break in the fifth game when a blistering drive forced Sabalenka to net a backhand. Raducanu clenched her fist in delight as the crowd's roar echoed under the closed roof. Despite trailing 4-2, Sabalenka quickly drew level in the eighth game. Although Sabalenka aimed to finish strong, Raducanu saved seven set points in a marathon 10th game, then broke in the next game, only for Sabalenka to immediately break back. A rollercoaster tie-break ultimately went Sabalenka's way as she saved a set point and secured a deft volley to take the lead. The 22-year-old British player regained the initiative by breaking in the fourth game of the second set and holding her serve amidst wild cheers from the captivated crowd. Sabalenka, her grunts amplified under the roof, saved a break point in the sixth game to stay alive in the second set. However, Raducanu missed her chances in the following game, going long with a forehand and losing her serve. Sabalenka then stepped up a gear, hitting a backhand down the line followed by an ace to level the score at 4-4. A couple of errors in the subsequent game gave Raducanu a tough challenge, resulting in her being broken again. Sabalenka's double fault offered Raducanu hope, but the British player netted to ignite celebrations from the top seed, who is now a strong favourite to win the tournament. Too soon to say if Mbappe will start against Dortmund, Alonso says
It is too soon to say whether Kylian Mbappe will start in Real Madrid's Club World Cup quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (July 5, 2025), coach Xabi Alonso said, as the French forward continues his recovery from gastroenteritis. Mbappe made his tournament debut on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) as Real Madrid edged Juventus 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals after missing all of the group stage. "He's getting better. He's been improving over the last three days," Alonso told reporters at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday (July 4, 2025). "Tomorrow morning we will be deciding if he will be part of the initial 11." Mbappe came off the bench as a substitute in the second half of the Spanish side's 1-0 win over Juventus in Miami on Tuesday (July 1, 2025), earning wild applause in a scene that underscored his global appeal at the U.S.-hosted tournament. Mbappe was briefly hospitalised early in the tournament, isolated from his teammates as he recovered. Alonso's team have leaned on Gonzalo Garcia to deputise in his absence, as the 21-year-old academy graduate has recorded three goals - including Tuesday's (July 1, 2025) winner - and an assist in a breakout performance at the competition. "I think (Garcia and Mbappe) could complement each other and if it's something that is required, it's not something I'm going to turn a blind eye to," said Alonso. They face a Dortmund team in solid form on Saturday (July 5, 2025), after the German side held off a stirring second-half fightback from Monterrey 2-1 this week to book their spot in the final eight. "Dortmund is a very good team. As soon as (coach Niko Kovac) was at the helm, they were growing and developing and on the rise," said Alonso. "We are facing a tough opponent... It's gonna be tight tomorrow."
