New York man identified as Gulf Shores drowning victim
UPDATE (6:30 p.m.): Officials have confirmed a 53-year-old man vacationing in Gulf Shores from New York drowned in the Gulf on Tuesday evening. Gulf Shores first responders responded to a call for three swimmers in distress near the Lighthouse Condominiums on East Beach Boulevard. 'We were up in the condo, waiting to go out for dinner and then I saw a commotion,' Gregg Teer, a man from St. Louis, Missouri, staying at a nearby condo, said. When lifeguards arrived at the scene, two of the swimmers had made it to shore, but a 53-year-old man from Springfield, New York, was still out in the Gulf. Emergency teams began resuscitation efforts on the man, but unfortunately, he did not survive. Police are not yet releasing the man's identity. 'No one thinks that this is going to happen,' Teer said. 'It's just a terrible tragedy.' Even though yellow flags were flying at the beaches on Tuesday, officials point to rough surf and strong rip currents as contributing to the reason the New York man drowned. Lifeguards warn that rip currents can form quickly, especially when a storm is brewing out in the Gulf. 'If you feel yourself getting pulled back and you can't swim, then just relax and call for help,' Gulf Shores Beach Safety Chief Joethan Phillips said. 'If you can float, you can stay alive. Don't try to swim back.' Yellow flags might mean a lower risk of rip currents forming, but the threat isn't gone. 'They are present and they are pooling,' Phillips added. 'That was the case yesterday.' 'The rescue teams, they're going out. You're putting them at risk when you're not following the flag conditions,' Teer said. 'The red flags are telling you there's a warning. Don't risk your life for a vacation.' PREVIOUS REPORTING GULF SHORES, Ala.
