Ahn Ji-young of Bol4 parts ways with agency after 10 years

Korea Herald02-04-2025

Ahn Ji-young, a singer-songwriter and the sole remaining member of indie pop band Bol4, announced Monday that she has officially ended her contract with Shofar Entertainment, the agency she had been with for a decade.
'Today, I am sharing the news that my 10-year journey with Shofar Entertainment has come to an end,' Ahn said via Instagram. 'I gave my all every single day and now I feel both proud and relieved. Though this new beginning may bring some concern, I hope our fans will trust me and follow along.'
Ahn also hinted at future plans, suggesting a new chapter ahead, though she did not disclose whether she would be joining a new agency or pursuing an independent career.
'I'm genuinely excited about this next step with our fans, LoBoly,' she added. 'As much as you've supported me, I promise to return the love with great music.'
Shofar Entertainment confirmed the contract termination through an official statement on Monday.
'We announce that our exclusive contract with Bol4, which began in 2015, has officially concluded as of March 2025,' the agency stated. 'It has been a great joy to work with Bol4, who gifted many people the universe with lovable music.'
Bol4 was originally formed as a duo and gained public recognition after appearing on Mnet TV competition 'Superstar K6' in 2014. With emotional lyrics, distinctive vocals and songwriting abilities, the act rose as an indie sensation.
The group made its official debut in April 2016 with the first EP 'Red Ickle' and saw breakout success with the hit track 'Galaxy' from first studio album 'Red Planet,' released in August of the same year. The two went on to release a string of popular singles, including 'Some,' 'Travel,' 'Tell Me You Love Me' and 'To My Youth.'
In April 2020, the duo's other half Woo Ji-yoon departed the group, after which Ahn continued Bol4 activities as a solo act under the same name.

Samyang's Buldak hot sauce goes viral with fiery global campaign

Innocean, the marketing agency affiliated with Hyundai Motor Group, said Tuesday that it has launched the global campaign for Samyang Foods' new product, Buldak hot sauce. Titled 'Ride the Buldak High,' the campaign features nine short-form videos that creatively highlight the intense spiciness of the sauce. Released on May 15, the videos have quickly gained popularity on global social media platforms, especially among Generation Z audiences. The campaign leverages meme-inspired humor and vertical video formats to align with digital content consumption trends. A standout element in the videos is the visual of a character being rocketed into the sky after tasting the sauce, symbolizing the fiery sensation and emotional high from having sauce. Since the campaign's release, Samyang Foods, the maker of the hot-selling Buldak ramyeon series, has seen a sharp rise in traffic to its official website, and a surge in social media followers. User-generated content continues to spread organically, especially in the US, with plans to roll out the campaign in more countries. "The campaign signals a new phase in Buldak's global brand evolution by activating multifaceted brand communication channels such as an augmented reality game and a Coachella Festival booth," said Innocean's Executive Creative Director Kim Ki-young.

World's most popular TikTok star Khaby Lame leaves the US after being detained by ICE

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Khaby Lame, the world's most popular TikTok personality with millions of followers, has left the US after being detained by immigration agents in Las Vegas for allegedly overstaying his visa. The Senegalese-Italian influencer, whose legal name is Seringe Khabane Lame, was detained Friday at Harry Reid International Airport but was allowed to leave the country without a deportation order, a spokesperson for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed in a statement. Lame arrived in the US on April 30 and "overstayed the terms of his visa," the ICE spokesperson said. The Associated Press sent a message seeking comment Tuesday to the email address listed on Lame's Instagram account. He has not publicly commented on his detainment. His detainment and voluntary departure from the US comes amid President Donald Trump's escalating crackdown on immigration, including raids in Los Angeles that sparked days of protests against ICE, as the president tests the bounds of his executive authority. A voluntary departure — which was granted to Lame — allows those facing removal from the US to avoid a deportation order on their immigration record, which could prevent them from being allowed back into the US for up to a decade. The 25-year-old rose to international fame during the pandemic without ever saying a word in his videos, which would show him reacting to absurdly complicated "life hacks." He has over 162 million followers on TikTok alone. The Senegal-born influencer moved to Italy when he was an infant with his working class parents and has Italian citizenship. His internet fame quickly evolved. He signed a multi-year partnership with designer brand Hugo Boss in 2022. In January, he was appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.

Girl group produced by Psy, Jeon Soyeon to debut

Girl group Baby Dont Cry teased its pending debut with an animated video of its logo uploaded on Monday to Instagram by agency P Nation. In the logo reveal, two pairs of animated cherries, the group's symbol, shed tears that morph into the group's logo against a pitch-black backdrop. The post revealed the group's debut date, set for June 23, and hinted at a promotional activity slated for the week prior, along with the phrase: 'You will definitely regret it if you miss this moment.' Although no details were given about the group, a video showing four female trainees from the management company dancing to Beyonce's 'Pure/Honey' was uploaded in April under the title 'The Future of P Girls.' Baby Dont Cry will be the first girl group from the agency established by Psy. The agency's music will be overseen by singer and producer Jeon Soyeon of I-dle.
