Interview: Japanese Artists Manaka Inaba & Leon Niihama On Performing For Japan Expo & Trying M'sian Dishes

The 6th edition of Japan Expo Malaysia was recently held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The three-day event, which ran from 18th to 20th July and was officiated by His Excellency Shikata Noriyuki, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, brought together over 50 exhibitors along with a line-up of Japanese artists and performances under one roof.
Speaking of artists, we had the opportunity to interview some of them on the launch day. In our first session, we sat down with singers Manaka Inaba and Leon Niihama, who spoke about their first experience in Malaysia and their excitement at performing for the festival.
1. Is this your first time in Malaysia? What has the experience been like so far?
Manaka Inaba: It's my first time here, and although it was a long flight, I was very happy to meet all my fans and be part of this year's Japan Expo. I've already tried a few things, but I'm looking forward to exploring more once I have the time.
Leon Niihama: This is my first time since my debut, but I've been to Malaysia once for an exchange student program during my high school years. A lot has changed. I was very surprised about the aerotrain, which was not there before when I last came here.
2. Have you received food or tourist attraction recommendations from Malaysian fans?
Manaka Inaba: Satay! My team and I had satay when we arrived, and it was so good! The ones we had were sweeter than I thought, but I loved them. I've also tried a lot of the local fruits here, but I've yet to try durian, so we'll see how that goes.
Leon Niihama: The last time I was here, I had Nasi Lemak, but I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to, so I didn't remember the taste much. This time, I get to savour the dish as much as I like! I had it for breakfast, and I plan to have 5 more later.
3. For Inaba, how does it feel to be part of Japan Expo Malaysia this year?
I was absolutely thrilled when I found out I'd be part of the event. It's my first performance overseas, and I was a little worried that not many fans would turn up—but I'm so happy that so many came to see me earlier.
4. You first debut as a member of Hello! Project before going solo. What was the transition like?
Basically, everything is different. In a group, you have to think about your members, so it's all about finding balance. As a solo artist, it's just me, and I had to learn the importance of expressing my opinions as myself and for myself. There's also a different kind of pressure in terms of performances cause I don't have my members to rely on, but I do my best.
5. Leon, could you tell us more about your musical style and what inspired you to pursue this direction?
Yes, I am an Enka singer, which is basically equivalent to the traditional or soulful genre of music. My father was a professional enka singer, so I grew up with it. He has inspired me a lot musically. I'm also very grateful to have received opportunities such as creating songs for 'Detective Conan', which allows me to introduce this style of music to a younger audience. I could've chosen a pop route, yes, but I wanted to share this part of Japanese culture with the rest of the world.
6. Speaking of 'Detective Conan', could you share more about the new ending theme for the latest film?
Collaborating with 'Detective Conan' has been a fantastic opportunity. The song is called 'Fun Fun Fun', and we also did a dance for the music video called the Waki Waki Dance. You can see both children and adults dancing together, and the feedback has been really positive. The dance challenge has also taken off on TikTok, with lots of people joining in.
7. What do you hope Malaysian fans take away from your performance here at Japan Expo Malaysia 2025?
Manaka Inaba: I want people to feel the beauty of Japan with not just my own music, but also Hello! Project's songs as well. I hope the audience will feel inspired by the message I'm trying to convey.
Leon Niihama: I believe there are still many people who aren't familiar with enka music, so I want to keep sharing the beauty of this genre to help more people learn to appreciate it.

Malaysia's heavy metal boys are back - legendary group XPDC aims to rock it up in the 'MetalKestra' concert on Nov 8

XPDC, Malaysia's first and foremost heavy metal band, are back again, and this time they aim to rock the fans and the arena in their large-scale concert at Zepp Kuala Lumpur on Nov 8. With over four decades of experience in the local music scene, making history after history through their work and still being considered the greatest heavy metal rock band ever born in the 80s, XPDC has promised fans an unforgettable night on November 8. Aptly named "XPDC MetalKestra", the concert is backed by Republic Mokhmah Records. Team leader and lead guitarist Izo said their concert this time will also have a backing of a full orchestra set-up. On top of that, the concert producers are also offering three personalised electric guitars for the fans at the super concert. One will be represented via a lucky draw, and the other two guitars for the best-dressed female and male fans at the show. Photo provided by Najib-KRU ( Back in 1998, the group won many admirers with an amazing show at the XPDC Konsert Raksasa at Stadium Negara and also in Shah Aam, where a total of more than 50,000 watched them perform. This year, they aim to recreate that magic led by lead guitarist Izo, the original member since 1988, together with Eddie (bass), Arif (guitar), Lola (drummer) and Mamu (lead vocals). Izo, whose real name is Mohd Zulkifly Nik Hussin, himself turning 61 this year, is considered among the foremost guitarists in the game in the country over the last four decades. "The team from 1988 and 1998 and now are very much different. I admit that. But our music is always the same to its core. That will never change. We were the first heavy metal guys, and we will always be that. And you will see that in our concert this year. "We will also make sure Ali, another founding member of XPDC, is present at the concert too. We will see if he can even join us on stage. But all that depends on his health, too." Ali of XPDC is also a household name in Malaysian music, said to be among the best rock vocalists in the business. But he has not been well with heart issues in recent times. However, Izo said he will make sure Ali joins them at the concert, but whether he will perform with them or not will be decided much later. Meanwhile, Musa dari Republic Mokhmah Records said his team are very excited and honoured to be part of the show as the concert producers. "First and foremost, I would like to say that I'm a very big fan of these guys. I have been listening to them since I was a kid, and it is an honour to be able to work with these super rockers," said Musa. "And in honour of these guys, we promise the best of set-up and background that will honour the legacy of XPDC. It will be a show that one will not forget, come Nov 8 and also in the future." "XPDC are among the stars who introduced 'Rock Kapak' to Malaysian music fans. And they are still proving this genre is far from over. They just keep rocking, and Malaysians keep enjoying their music." Meanwhile, XPDC described the "MetalKestra" theme, which combines the metal genre with orchestral playing, as the right choice, as they wanted to present something fresh but still within XPDC's strong genre. 'Fans will not only enjoy the heavy metal that is synonymous with XPDC, but the orchestral combination will add to the richness of the songs that will be performed live to the fans. 'XPDC Metalkestra is also our appreciation for the spirit of the fans who have never lost and supported us through many ups and downs over the past four decades. "This concert is also a benchmark that XPDC will not stop here,' said drummer Lola, who is also a veteran of the band and has been with them since 1997. The group members also promised fans that they will be singing songs from the four decades that the band has been famous for. "And you can bet our famous songs like 'Apa Nak Di Kata, Nafisa, Kita Peng Yu, Hidup Bersama, Hijau Bumi Tuhan and CT Cinta Kenangan Silam' will be played for the fans," said Izo and Lola. Tickets for the show are priced at RM198 (Cat 4 - Samurai -- Normal numbered seating) ; RM338 (Cat 3 – Brutal -- VIP numbered seating, tshirt & poster) ; RM138 (Cat 2 – Darjah Satu -- Free standing) ; RM168 (Cat 1 – Kita Peng-yu -- f ront row standing) ; and RM5,008 (Royal box - 10 pax, meet & greet, goodie bag s ) . South Korean superstar and ITSU VVS product ambassador Park Shin Hye at the launch in 1Utama Shopping Centre. IT was a glamorous afternoon at 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya on July 27 as Malaysian wellness brand ITSU unveiled its latest offering: the VVS – a revolutionary 'workout sofa' that fuses sleek home design with cutting-edge vertical vibration therapy. The launch event had no shortage of star power, with South Korean actress, singer and model Park Shin Hye officiating the grand launch at Ground Floor, LUXE. Fans and shoppers gathered in excited anticipation as Shin Hye – ITSU VVS product ambassador revealed the chic workout sofa — a modern piece designed for those who want to look good, feel good, and live well, all from the comfort of their living room. Shin Hye graced the launch with her signature on ITSU VVS, followed by a warm welcome from the ITSU chief executive officer Datuk Eric Cheah. Shin Hye was greeted by Cheah at the event. 'I feel honoured to be the face of ITSU VVS. ITSU is very popular in Malaysia, and I'm glad I finally got to try it out,' she beamed. When asked about the commercial shoot, she chuckled, 'Filming ads usually drains me, but VVS was so comfortable, I felt like I got a power boost instead.' The event concluded on a high note with a cheerful group photo alongside the ITSU team. To make the celebration even sweeter, ITSU rolled out an irresistible grand launch deal, giving lucky customers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to bring home the VVS through its 'RM0 Price' promotion. After the unveiling, Shin Hye made a special appearance at IOI City Mall, where she was warmly greeted by Selangor princess Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. The actress and the Princess had a heartfelt chat as Shin Hye answered a series of fun, hypothetical questions submitted by fans – posed by the Princess herself – a royal touch that elevated the event beyond a typical celebrity meet-and-greet. From left: Tyson Ng, Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Park Shin Hye and Safreena Sairee at the launch. This was followed by a group photo session with IOI City Mall manager Safreena Sairee, and ITSU representative, Tyson Ng. Designed for the modern urban home, the ITSU VVS – endorsed by the Hong Kong Health Care Federation – is an elegant lifestyle companion. Clad in silky-smooth, wrinkle-resistant velvet, the VVS is available in four serene shades — Lavender, Misty Jade, Light Rose and Ocean Blue — chosen to complement contemporary interiors while inviting daily use. At its core lies vertical vibration therapy, a gentle yet effective innovation engineered to mimic the impact of a workout without the wear and tear of rigorous exercise. With a precise 3.2mm vertical vibration therapy, the VVS delivers fast-paced, up-down propulsion that stimulates muscle contractions — similar to skipping rope, minus the impact. At lower settings, the vibrations become soothing, offering a massage-like effect that's both calming and restorative. 1Utama advertising and promotions team Yap Yee Leng (second from left), Bryan Chin (fourth from left), and Chai Ai Ping (fifth from left) together with the ITSU team. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered: a metal pull ring doubles as a handle to detach the seat for standing workouts or a handy magazine rack, while the 5cm high-density cushion ensures lasting comfort and structure. In addition to that, the ergonomic 45cm seat height is just right for effortless sitting and standing. Whether you're winding down after a long day or sneaking in a quick wellness boost between meetings, the ITSU VVS blends form and function to support your lifestyle with quiet sophistication. SPWinds' Vienna Victory A Testament To Malaysian Talent, Says Education Minister

SEPANG, July 30 (Bernama) -- Sekolah Seri Puteri's Symphonic Winds Orchestra (SPWinds) Gold Award at the 11th World Orchestra Festival (WOF) in Vienna was a remarkable achievement that has brought pride to Malaysia on the international stage. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the success was the result of the students' dedication, strong family and school support, as well as continuous guidance from the Ministry of Education (MoE). 'SSP has delivered an excellent performance, especially in the orchestra field. This win is a solid victory. The training, support from families, the school, and MOE for this team has been very strong. 'So this is truly a victory for Malaysian children on the world stage, and it is one we must celebrate,' she said after welcoming the team's return at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) yesterday. Fadhlina said SPWinds deserves proper recognition, and the MOE is currently exploring appropriate forms of reward for the orchestra team. 'They deserve to be rewarded. We will look into suitable forms of recognition, but for now, let us first celebrate their outstanding success on the world stage,' she said. A total of 66 students aged between 13 and 17 participated in the festival. They performed 'Amana' by Hiroaki Kataoka as well as 'Rai dan Tari' by local composer Yeo Chow Shern under the direction of conductor Raja Muzafar Shah, who was also named Best Conductor. The WOF, organised by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, brought together more than 20 orchestras from 10 countries, with performances held at several iconic venues.
