Dear Coleen: 'I want to leave my husband for my lover but I'm scared my kids will hate me'

"I don't want to hurt anyone, but feel if I stay in this unhappy marriage, I'll suffer myself. Am I selfish for feeling this way? I don't know what to do."
Dear Coleen
I am a 50-year-old married mother of two daughters aged 26 and 29. For the past five years, I've known that although I love my husband, I'm not in love with him any more. I love him because he's the father of my children.

Life hasn't been easy – he's a challenge to say the least. He has a fractured relationship with our eldest daughter and doesn't think about what he says or how it may affect others.

I've always tried to smooth over the cracks and keep the peace, but it's draining. He used to drink heavily every day and we can still smell alcohol on him. I've tried to help, suggesting he needs to talk to someone and I've offered to go with him, but he refuses and instead plays the victim.

I've been having an affair for a few months with a kind and caring man who wants a life with me. The love he feels for me radiates and I desperately want to go to him, but I'm terrified of the fall out and what my daughters will think.
I don't want to hurt anyone, but feel if I stay in this unhappy marriage, I'll suffer myself. Am I selfish for feeling this way? I don't know what to do.

Coleen says
It's not selfish to feel how you do and I think you can confide in your daughters about how unhappy you've been without telling them about the affair. They're old enough to cope with real conversations and they love you and won't want you to be unhappy.
It sounds like you've tried everything to help your husband but, as I'm sure you're aware, there's only so much you can do. When it comes to alcohol or any addiction, that person has to acknowledge the problem and be ready to accept help.

As for the guy you're having the affair with, he's offering you something that's been missing in your marriage and that's incredibly attractive and intoxicating. I've been there myself at certain points.
But my advice is to take a beat and don't immediately throw all your eggs into one basket with this guy. If your marriage is over, it's good to have a bit of time on your own before jumping into another relationship, to get to know yourself again without having to think about anyone else.
It doesn't mean you can't date but don't make this man the be all and end all until you know what you really want. Focus on addressing your marriage – that is your priority. It will be good to feel like you're in a better place before making any kind of proper commitment to this guy or anyone else.
Also, talk to a counsellor to help you navigate things and maybe having therapy before you speak to your husband will give you more confidence and courage. Good luck.

King Charles to address nation on 80th anniversary of VJ Day tomorrow morning

The monarch has recorded a special message to the Nation, Realms and Commonwealth, to make the occasion. King Charles III has paid tribute to those who fought and died in the Pacific and Far East for the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, saying their sacrifice and service "shall never be forgotten". ‌ The monarch has recorded a special message to the Nation, Realms and Commonwealth, to make the occasion. The message will be broadcasted at 7.30am in the UK tomorrow as commemorations take place across the world. ‌ The address will echo the historic one delivered by his grandfather, King George VI, who announced the end of the Second World War on August 15, 1945, the Mirror reports. ‌ During the six minute audio broadcast, Charles will reference the experience endured by Prisoners of War, and to the innocent civilians of occupied lands in the region, whose suffering 'reminds us that war's true cost extends beyond battlefields, touching every aspect of life'. The King's message, was recorded last week in the Morning Room at Clarence House. In the personally penned address, Charles will also describe how the heroes of VJ Day 'gave us more than freedom; they left us the example of how it can and must be protected', since victory was made possible by close collaboration between nations, 'across vast distances, faiths and cultural divides'. His Majesty will also comment on how the selfless determination of our greatest generation demonstrated that, 'in times of war and in times of peace, the greatest weapons of all are not the arms you bear but the arms you link'. The King's full message will be released at 7.30am in the UK tomorrow as commemorations take place across the world. ‌ On August 15, 1945, King George VI spoke to the nation to herald the beginning of a new era for Britain and Europe, saying: 'Japan has surrendered, so let us join in thanking Almighty God that war has ended throughout the world, and that in every country men may now turn their industry, skill, and science to repairing its frightful devastation and to building prosperity and happiness. 'Our sense of deliverance is overpowering, and with it all, we have a right to feel that we have done our duty. I ask you again at this solemn hour to remember all who have laid down their lives, and all who have endured the loss of those they love.' As part of national commemorations next week the country is set to fall silent for two minutes to honour the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The King and Queen will also tomorrow attend a service of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, featuring a 400-strong contingent from the armed forces, a display by the Red Arrows and historic planes from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. ‌ Organised in collaboration with the Royal British Legion (RBL), the remembrance service will be attended by Second World War veterans, who Charles and Camilla will meet. As part of the commemorations this year, the King, 76, in January travelled to Poland to commemorate 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The monarch said "the act of remembering the evils of the past remains a vital task" as he met Holocaust survivors in Poland. While VE Day, on May 8, 1945, marked the conclusion of the war in Europe, the fight against Japanese forces in Asia and the Pacific continued for three more months, involving thousands of British and Commonwealth troops. ‌ During four days of commemorations in London, King Charles welcomed some of the last remaining WWII veterans and their families to Buckingham Palace for a special engagement to acknowledge their sacrifice. At a concert in Horse Guards Parade he further echoed the words of his grandfather saying: 'His words echo down through history as all this week, and especially today, we unite to celebrate and remember with an unwavering and heartfelt gratitude, the service and sacrifice of the wartime generation who made that hard-fought victory possible. "While our greatest debt is owed to all those who paid the ultimate price, we should never forget how the war changed the lives of virtually everyone.'

Dear Coleen: 'My husband says he doesn't love me but I need him to fight for our marriage'

Coleen Nolan advises a shocked reader whose husband has walked out, and has been begging him to see a counsellor to try to save their relationship I'm writing this letter with tears in my eyes after my husband of 10 years told me it's over. I'm completely heartbroken and honestly didn't see it coming. We met at college when we were 20, got married at 25 and now have two young children. ‌ He was upset when he told me, but said he was desperately unhappy and wasn't in love with me any longer. He cried the whole time and said there wasn't anyone else involved and I believe him. He's moved in with his brother for a while, so we can have some space from each other to think and I'm hoping it'll be easier to talk after some time apart. ‌ I've begged him to consider counselling, so we can try again, but he says it's beyond that for him. I'm devastated that he doesn't want to try, not just for us, but for our children. As days go by, my frustration is growing and I want more information from him about where this has all come from, but it's too hard to talk right now because we both start crying. It's very painful. Any help would be appreciated. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. Coleen says It's so hard when it's not mutual and I'm afraid nothing I can say now will remove the pain that you're feeling. It's normal to look for answers and explanations in this situation, and couples counselling might help with this. However, you can't force him to go to therapy with you and it's not for everyone. But it can help couples to separate, though, as well as help to repair relationships, so that's an angle you can push. You could also see a therapist on your own, which is what I did when my first marriage was crumbling, and it was a lifeline. It was obviously hard for him to admit how he feels, and I can feel how grief-stricken you are too. You met when you were very young, so that might be a factor. But all you can do is give him the space he's asked for and, as tough as it is, you should carry on with your life – do the things you need to do, push yourself to see friends and keep going. Once the dust has settled a bit, he might be more forthcoming about his reasons or he even come back at some point, saying he's made the worst mistake of his life and wants to try again. But when your heart heals, it's hard to open it up to the person who broke it. While I understand your frustration, try to make the children your main focus and keep a routine going, so their lives remain as steady and familiar as possible. Good luck.
