Retiree loses over RM460,000 in investment and legal service scams
Johor Baru Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said police received a report from the 60-year-old woman today.
He said the victim stated that the incident began on June 17 after she saw an investment advertisement on Facebook while at her home in Ulu Tiram.
"The investment promised extraordinary returns of up to 94 per cent within a day.
"Enticed by the lucrative offer, the victim contacted the phone number displayed and was then added to a WhatsApp group that supposedly provided guidance on stock trading.
"Over nine days between June 17 and 26, the victim made 20 transactions totalling RM286,337 into several bank accounts belonging to different local individuals.
"However, every time the victim attempted to withdraw her profits, the suspect gave various excuses and requested additional payments, until the victim realised she had been deceived," he said in a statement here yesterday.
Raub said the victim later sought legal services to help recover the funds, after coming across another advertisement on Facebook.
He said the victim then contacted an individual who claimed to represent a law firm and was added to another WhatsApp group.
"The victim was taught how to recover her money but was asked to make payments for legal matters.
"Between July 4 and Aug 2, the victim made seven transactions amounting to RM180,900 into seven different accounts as payment for the legal process.
"The victim continued to be asked for more payments until she realised she was being scammed.
"Police checks found that the 23 accounts involved had a total of 24 prior fraud records," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Its Secretary Mohd Shamsul Husry Abdul Wahid said the post was filled with false accusations, slander and attempts to tarnish the reputation of the Education Exco. He said the allegations were untrue, provocative and could create negative public perception while disrupting investigations into Zara's death. 'As Dr Arifin stated on Aug 9, Farisya Maisara is not his daughter and none of his children are, or have ever been, students at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar,' he said. He described the irresponsible remarks as malicious public incitement, threatening the safety and dignity of both the victim's family and the accused party. He urged the authorities to act swiftly against the Facebook account owner, adding that their lawyers are reviewing legal options to file a lawsuit. He also advised the public to stop spreading defamatory claims about the case. Shamsul said the division wants immediate investigation into several Facebook account holders for posting the false and defamatory statements. The report also called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate and act against those spreading the content. In Beaufort, several Gagasan Rakyat Membakut committee members also lodged police reports, led by its information chief Awang Daud Ag Anak, who denied that Dr Arifin's daughter was involved in the bullying case. 'We want the police to investigate and take action against those spreading slander on social media against the Membakut Assemblyman,' he said. Should 'hard up for Type C dollar' be blamed for spate of Chinese mainlanders' crimes in Malaysia?
CHINA nationals have earned the wrath of a rightist Malay group following an alarming rate of indecency to their host country. This follows five crime incidents over the past one month alone which showcased their disrespect to the Malaysian law, its people and local culture. 'In just three weeks, these cases involving Chinese nationals occurred at university campus, defence centre, city street, night market and airports. They were scattered in terms of location but close in terms of time,' penned opposition-slant Gerakan Pengundi Sedar in a recent Facebook post. 'This phenomenon occurs as Malaysia is increasingly becoming a destination of choice for Chinese citizens – not only as tourists – but also as students, investors and participants in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme.' The self-proclaimed laymen political advocate went on to cite the following incidents which coincidentally have also received media coverage: On Aug 14, a 31-year-old China national woman cursed at an immigration officer, pulled her tudung This came about after the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) found that the woman, another adult and two children did not have any record of entering Malaysia. The suspect was arrested immediately and remanded for four days. On Aug 13, a 24-year-old Chinese national woman was arrested after running amok and attacking six members of the public with a knife near Metro Point in Kajang after having rammed her vehicle into three motorcycles while yelling 'I hate Malaysia' On the same day, anti-Chinese Communist Party volunteers at the Taman Connaught night market in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (KL) claimed they were threatened by men dressed in black while distributing leaflets. On Aug 6, two Chinese nationals were arrested while flying a drone at the football field near the Wisma Pertahanan in Wangsa Maju, KL which is a restricted zone. Both men were charged at the KL Sessions Court om Aug 13 under Sections 3(a) and 4 of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) for spying and documenting within restricted areas. Strengthen existing laws to address bullying, says Nancy
PETALING JAYA: A review should be done to strengthen existing laws to address bullying, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (pic). The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said that although the task of amending laws does not come under her purview, she is prepared to discuss the matter with the relevant agencies. 'There may not be a need to enact a new law. 'However, in light of recent bullying cases, it may give us new ideas to explore possible improvements to existing laws,' she told reporters after attending the Gempak Inspirasi @ Sepagi Bersama PPWS 2025 Programme yesterday. Nancy said the matter would be raised during the Cabinet meeting, Bernama reported. The minister was responding to calls from Gerakan Gubal Akta Anti Buli (GAB) for the government to introduce a specific law to comprehensively address bullying. On the need for a specific law, Nancy said that there is no need for a new law as bullying is already covered under the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025 and the Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Act 2025. Meanwhile, the Education Ministry announced the setting up of a committee to improve safety in all educational institutions. Dubbed the Safety and Education Institutional Reforms Committee, it held its first meeting on Friday and immediately outlined a clear direction and a comprehensive action plan to be implemented in stages with regard to the reforms. 'The committee was set up specifically to deal with issues that may arise while coming up with the appropriate resolution framework to ensure the safety and the well-being of students, teachers and those in the education community,' the ministry said in a statement on its Facebook account yesterday. The setting up of the committee follows the widely reported death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Zara Qairina's body was exhumed 23 days after burial to facilitate a renewed investigation. The committee comprises academicians, representatives from non-governmental organisations, experts, relevant agencies and the private sector. Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said that a whole of nation approach must be taken to put a stop to bullying. 'All Malaysians must unite and work together to address the issue.'
