Should 'hard up for Type C dollar' be blamed for spate of Chinese mainlanders' crimes in Malaysia?
This follows five crime incidents over the past one month alone which showcased their disrespect to the Malaysian law, its people and local culture.
'In just three weeks, these cases involving Chinese nationals occurred at university campus, defence centre, city street, night market and airports. They were scattered in terms of location but close in terms of time,' penned opposition-slant Gerakan Pengundi Sedar in a recent Facebook post.
'This phenomenon occurs as Malaysia is increasingly becoming a destination of choice for Chinese citizens – not only as tourists – but also as students, investors and participants in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme.'
The self-proclaimed laymen political advocate went on to cite the following incidents which coincidentally have also received media coverage:
On Aug 14, a 31-year-old China national woman cursed at an immigration officer, pulled her tudung
This came about after the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) found that the woman, another adult and two children did not have any record of entering Malaysia. The suspect was arrested immediately and remanded for four days.
On Aug 13, a 24-year-old Chinese national woman was arrested after running amok and attacking six members of the public with a knife near Metro Point in Kajang after having rammed her vehicle into three motorcycles while yelling 'I hate Malaysia'
On the same day, anti-Chinese Communist Party volunteers at the Taman Connaught night market in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (KL) claimed they were threatened by men dressed in black while distributing leaflets.
On Aug 6, two Chinese nationals were arrested while
flying a drone at the football field near the Wisma Pertahanan in Wangsa Maju, KL which is a restricted zone.
Both men were charged at the KL Sessions Court om Aug 13 under Sections 3(a) and 4 of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) for spying and documenting within restricted areas.
On July 22, Chinese national You Wei, 22, was charged t the Sessions Court in Shah Alam for stabbing compatriot Wu Jalin, 20
'Policies such as long-term visas, foreign property ownership and investment in strategic sectors have opened up economic opportunities but at the same time raise questions,' stressed Gerakan Pengundi Sedar.
'Are our screening and monitoring mechanisms strict enough to protect public safety? Are the facilities provided to attract investment and second home ownership also attracting individuals who may pose social risks?' – Aug 17, 2025
Editor's Note: The number of students from China applying to study in Malaysian universities grew by 25% in 2024, driven by a shift in global student mobility.
Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) said international students, including from China, are shifting away from the world's 'Big Four' study destinations: the UK, US, Australia and Canada.
'More students are exploring dynamic and diverse destinations across Asia. Malaysia is one of the top destinations,' it told The Star.
EMGS which is under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry said its data shows that students from China continued to top the list of study applications to Malaysia at 33,216 in 2024 compared to 26,627 applications in 2023.
Other top applications came from Bangladesh (6,917), Indonesia (5,556), India (2,591) and Pakistan (2,417).

Hong Kong democrat Jimmy Lai given heart monitor for final stretch of marathon trial
FILE PHOTO: Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai pauses during an interview in Hong Kong on July 1, 2020. - AP HONG KONG: Hong Kong pro-democracy businessman Jimmy Lai was provided with medication and a heart monitor for the start of his final submissions in a landmark national security trial, following health concerns over heart palpitations. Lai, 77, who founded the Apple Daily newspaper that was forced to close after a police raid and asset freeze in June 2021, has pleaded not guilty to two charges of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, and a charge of conspiracy to publish seditious material. Lai's lawyer Robert Pang told the court last Friday (Aug 15) that Lai had some episodes where he felt that he was collapsing and had heart "palpitations", prompting the court to adjourn proceedings and order that he be provided with a heart monitor and medication. Prosecutor Anthony Chau confirmed that Lai had been provided with these items on Friday and that he was now fit for court. Lai, noticeably thinner than when the trial began in late 2023, was dressed in a white jacket in the glass dock and pressed his palms together in a prayer gesture several times to his family and supporters. One of the judges, Esther Toh, said additional breaks could be provided for Lai if need be, while also acknowledging the opinion of a medical expert who examined Lai that he was "physically and mentally fit for court." "I'm worried for him. He's already in his 70s and has diabetes, and now palpitations," said Lucille, a supporter who queued for hours to get into the packed courtroom. Lai, a British citizen, has been held in solitary confinement for around 1,700 days. His son and some rights groups have expressed fear over his deteriorating health. Some Western governments have called for Lai's immediate release and raised concerns about the erosion of fundamental rights in the financial hub under China-imposed national security laws. Hong Kong and Chinese authorities have said Lai is being given a fair trial and have warned against such interference in the city's internal affairs. US President Donald Trump said in a media interview last week that he would "do everything I can to save him." An Australian foreign affairs spokesperson told Reuters on Monday that Canberra was "deeply concerned by Hong Kong's widespread application of national security laws to repress civil society and prosecute pro-democracy advocates... such as Jimmy Lai". - Reuters
