Kerala Tourism in high hopes for its Look East campaign after decision to restore Chinese tourist visas
Kerala Tourism had kicked off the Look East campaign to woo tourists from eight East Asian countries, including China, in April this year. As part of the campaign, a 90-member delegation from eight countries, including social media influencers and 40 outbound tour operators from China, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Vietnam, and Laos, visited the State. The campaign helped in increasing tourist arrivals from especially Malaysia and Singapore as there is direct flight connectivity between Kerala and these countries.
The absence of issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals was a dissuading factor for Kerala to tap into the Chinese market, despite the country being the world's largest outbound travel market in Asia. The marketing campaign has also not earmarked any specific amount for the China campaign, said a source in the Tourism department. The marketing budget for Kerala Tourism for this year was mainly for European and Arab market campaigns, apart from the Look East campaign.
In next fiscal
This year's budget and campaigns were finalised, and a targeted campaign for China could be undertaken only in the next fiscal. In addition, the situation has to be assessed well before strategising a dedicated China campaign as the ties between China and India have weathered ups and downs in the past. Nonetheless, China is an enticing market for Kerala, as 3,39,442 Chinese nationals visited India in 2019, as per the statistics of the Ministry of Tourism, although the number nosedived to 39,586 in 2020, 3,502 in 2021 and 11,762 in 2022 following the COVID-19 outbreak and the frozen ties between India and China in the wake of the military standoff at the Line of Actual Control and Galwan clashes in 2020.
In 2019, as many as 11,778 Chinese tourists visited Kerala, an up of 22.31% compared to 9,630 tourists in 2018. According to James Kodianthara, former chairperson of the Kerala chapter of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), Chinese tourists visiting the country were mainly looking for the Golden Triangle tour package, a popular tourist circuit connecting Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, and the northeastern States.
Though the issuance of visas started on July 24, direct flight connectivity is yet to be restored, which is vital for increasing the tourist arrivals and cultural exchange, said Mr. Kodianthara. Also, China is a promising market for Kerala, and getting a pie in the Chinese market will benefit Kerala Tourism in a big way, he added.

China urges Thailand, Cambodia reconciliation in three-way talks
China expressed support for Thailand and Cambodia in resolving their border dispute on Thursday (August 14, 2025) and offered to provide assistance based on the wishes of both nations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said. It was the worst fighting in more than a decade and only eased after a ceasefire was struck in late July. In a bilateral meeting with Thailand's Maris, Mr. Wang spoke about China's readiness to accelerate a China-Thailand railway construction project, encourage more investments from Chinese enterprises in Thailand and ensure the stability of the regional production and supply chain. It is hoped that Thailand will provide more policy support and facilitation for Chinese enterprises, he told his Thai counterpart. While meeting with Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, Mr. Wang sounded support for Cambodia maintaining political stability, and said China is appreciative of the country's crackdown on online gambling and wire fraud. He also expressed hopes that Cambodia will continue strong measures for joint efforts in the region against cross-border criminal activities.

Pakistan will establish a new military force to supervise its missile capabilities, the Prime Minister has said, after its worst conflict in decades with India. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the formation of the Rocket Force Command while addressing an Independence Day ceremony in Islamabad attended by senior military officials late on Wednesday (August 13, 2025). 'It will be equipped with modern technology and capable of striking the enemy from all directions,' Mr. Sharif said at the ceremony, during which the deadly clash with India in May dominated official speeches and displays. 'It will improve our conventional war capabilities,' he said, commending the military for its performance. Pakistan and India fought an intense four-day conflict in May that killed dozens of people on both sides in missile, drone and artillery fire, the worst clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours since 1999. Higher defence spend Islamabad is boosting its military capabilities following the conflict, increasing defence spending by 20% in the current Budget that was passed in June. It also announced that it was in discussions to acquire 40 new Chinese fighter jets and new air defence systems. 'After the recent conflict, the object of course is to further strengthen Pakistan's military capability and this is a part of that process,' defence analyst Talat Masood said. The May conflict was triggered by a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the death of 26 civilians. 'Drishyam 2' producer Kumar Mangat Pathak granted bail by Patiala House court
Producer has been granted anticipatory bail by the Patiala House court in Delhi with regard to an FIR lodged by . The court observed in the ledger entries that the payment made to the corporate account of Panorama Studios International Limited by Rajinder Goel was for a Gujarati film, and not for 'Drishyam 2.' The producer's legal team said in a statement, "It is categorically stated that Mr. Kumar Mangat Pathak on behalf of his company Panorama Studios International Limited (PSIL) has never entered into any transaction or agreement with Mr. Rajinder Goel, and as such, he has never invested any money with Mr. Kumar Mangat Pathak or PSIL. His allegations are false, baseless, concocted and appear to be an afterthought designed to create a misleading and malicious narrative with intentions to malign the reputation of Kumar Mangat Pathak and PSIL. It is further clarified that any dealings , transactions done by Mr. Rajinder Goel were solely with a third party and not with Mr. Kumar Mangat Pathak or his company. Any attempt to link Mr. Kumar Mangat Pathak to such transactions is wholly unfounded and malicious." Following the bail, Kumar Mangat Pathak has instructed his legal team to initiate Rs 100 crore defamation suit against Rajinder Goel. The producer's advocate, Vineet Dhanda, said, "We also urge members of the press to act with responsibility and refrain from publishing or circulating unverified and false narratives that can cause unwarranted harm to Mr. Pathak's reputation and standing in the film industry." "The legal team will take all necessary steps, including legal proceedings, against any individual or entity found propagating such falsehoods," he added.
