Court grants bail to 4 accused in KZN rehab murder
The Witness reports that in the dock were Lloyd Clive Ramsbottom (29), Banele Mseleku (24), Jean Pierre van Niekerk (28) and Njabulo Brandon Dlamini (28). They were working as volunteer mentors at the centre while also being patients.
On hearing the bail ruling, Edwards' family and friends stood up and left the courtroom before the magistrate announced the postponement date.
Investigating officer Kenneth Khanyase testified that Edwards, who was a patient at the recovery centre, was beaten over several hours with a crate. He said Edwards had been isolated, deprived of food and subjected to severe violence by the four.
The state argued that bail could threaten witnesses' safety and that all four are flight risks as they are unemployed. The accused said they plan to plead not guilty and disputed any involvement in the murder.
Van Niekerk and Ramsbottom both claimed ignorance of the fatal assault. Mseleku and Dlamini cited concerns over deteriorating mental and physical health as justification for bail, arguing prison conditions at Westville Prison, where they have been held, hindered their rehabilitation.
During Khanyase's cross-examination, the defence questioned how he obtained the information that led to the arrest of the accused. He replied that it came from witnesses at Tetelestai Recovery Centre.
The defence also questioned the credibility of the witnesses, saying they were not physically present when the assault happened but only saw Edwards and the accused together.
The case was postponed to August 19 for further investigation.

Video: Police minister on leave amid allegations by KZN police commissioner
After citizens waited with bated breath longer than expected, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation earlier tonight regarding national security concerns raised by KZN's police commissioner. Some of the allegations made by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi include interference in investigations, disbanding the Political Killings Task Team, links to criminal syndicates, collusion with accused individuals, and misleading Parliament. Exactly a week on from these scathing remarks, and due to the president's Brics commitments, Ramaphosa announced that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has been placed on a leave of absence with immediate effect. The president added that Mchunu has promised to give his full co-operation into an investigation launched by Ramaphosa. This contrasts with earlier media reports suggesting the president had three options regarding the minister: Reassigning him, awaiting his voluntary resignation, or applying the ANC's step-aside rule if he is officially under investigation. Furthermore, a judicial commission of inquiry has been established to investigate these allegations and several other matters, including compromised individuals and legislation. It will be chaired by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga. The commission will provide an interim report after three months and another after six months. Until August, an acting police minister will be appointed from within Cabinet. Thereafter, Prof Firoz Cachalia, a former Gauteng MEC and current adjunct professor at Wits University, will serve in the position until the next steps are taken. Police Minister spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi in a statement said Mchunu has welcomed the decision and expressed his full support for the process. 'I welcome and respect the president's decision and pledge my commitment to the process. Honour and integrity are the virtues I personally subscribe to and which we all need to make efforts to uphold. I stand ready to respond to the accusations against me and account to the citizens of the Republic, fully and honestly so.' WATCH LIVE: All eyes on Ramaphosa amid explosive Mkhwanazi allegations
President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to address the nation regarding KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner lieutenant general Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's damning allegations against the minister of police, Senzo Mchunu. This comes after an explosive media briefing addressed by Mkhwanazi on Sunday, 6 July. The South African reported that during the media briefing, Mkhwanazi revealed that the political killings task team [Which Mchunu wanted to be disbanded in December 2024] has uncovered a syndicate including senior politicians, senior police officials, metro police, officials in correctional services, prosecutors, and other influential businesspeople that is controlled by a drug cartel in Gauteng. Additionally, Mkhwanazi accused the minister of police of political interference in investigations, as he reportedly ordered the task team to be disbanded and the withdrawal of 120 case dockets. He also name-dropped North West businessman and African National Congress (ANC) member Brown Mogotsi, together with Gauteng tenderpreneur Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, as Mchunu's close associates who have classified SAPS information. Earlier this week, the Presidency confirmed that Ramaphosa was attending a BRICS summit in Brazil on Sunday, 6 July, when lieutenant general Mkhwanazi outlined numerous allegations at a media briefing. 'The President undertook to attend to this development on his return from Brazil, given the implications for national security,' Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya said. In response to Mkhwanazi's allegations, ministry of police spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi said they would be reviewing the provincial commissioner's statements and would consider appropriate action. Mogotsi said all the statements made by Mkhwanazi in public require an urgent, thorough and transparent investigation, on a proper platform. 'The minister of police remains committed to upholding the rule of law, ensuring accountability within the SAPS, and serving the people of South Africa with integrity,' she said.
