
Crunching the numbers of running for president
In the 2018 presidential election, the six candidates spent more than €1.3 million between them.
In 2011, when an incumbent wasn't running, the seven candidates that year spent €2.3 million. The highest spending candidate was Fine Gael's Gay Mitchell. His campaign cost €527,000.
Under the rules of the Electoral Act 1997, a candidate for the Irish presidency cannot exceed a spend of €750,000.
In all presidential, general and European elections, candidates are entitled to a reimbursement from the State if they exceed one quarter of the quota.
For presidential elections a quarter of the quota is 50% plus one. So in order for a presidential candidate to be reimbursed, they must get at least 12.5% of votes.
In 2011, three of the seven candidate met this threshold. In 2018, just two candidates did.
For the upcoming presidential election, the cap on reimbursement has been set at €250,000. In 2018, the cap was €200,000.
Political scientist Liz Carolan said that the high cost with the potential for no reimbursement, may explain why some parties seem hesitant to put a candidate forward.
"It could be that they're looking back to that experience and they're looking and saying this could easily cost us half a million," she said.
That means if a party misreads its candidate's popularity, not only is it potentially embarrassingly, but also hugely costly.
"A few former candidates have come out and sort of spoken about how it was a costly and bruising experience," Ms Carolan added.
Expenses in a presidential campaign
In the 2018 election, just under €75,000 was declared by all candidates as donations to their campaign. That amounts to around 5% of the €1.3 million that was spent by all candidates during that campaign.
"It does appear that a log of the funding behind the presidential campaign must be coming from the parties' own funds that they've been raising, individuals own funds, some of these small donations, or some combination of the of all three," Ms Carolan said.
This is because the rules on accepting donations in Ireland for a political campaign are quite limiting.
Richard Moore was involved in the presidential election campaigns of both Seán Gallagher in 2011 and that of Gavin Duffy in 2018.
In 2011, the big difference between Mr Gallagher and the other candidates in the race was the decision by his campaign not to use election posters.
"I think the best thing [Seán Gallagher] did was not buy the posters," Mr Moore said.
"They're just too expensive.
"Back then there were €10 a go."
Mr Gallagher made it a point of difference in his campaign that he was the only candidate who wasn't putting up posters.
"He used it as a virtue," Mr Moore said, adding that many people are annoyed by posters despite the fact they are useful for recognition.
Mr Moore says Mr Gallagher's decision "definitely" started a trend.
In 2011, six out of seven candidates used posters as part of their campaign.
In 2018, just two candidates out of six did so.
In Seán Gallagher's campaign, Mr Moore said the big expenses were staffing and leaflets which were handed out to people outside GAA matches, DART stops and LUAS stops.
Mr Moore said that he doesn't believe that either campaign he worked on spent a significant amount of money on online advertising but that could change this time around.
"If you're a political party, you've already got the background people, because they're in party headquarters anyway," Mr Moore said.
"You might hire in a few extra people, but generally speaking, you already have your support staff.
"If you run as an independent, you have to build up your staff in a short period of time.
"Communications people, your advertising people, your campaign manager is very important ... your diary people."
Mr Moore said that staffing is the big expense for an independent candidate. However, he maintains that no spend is worth more than the candidate's performance on the TV debates.
"That's where I think the resources would need to be put into in terms of maybe candidate training and that kind of stuff.
"Ultimately it's always going to be won or lost on TV."
Fundraising and merchandise
In 2018, the biggest spender was the incumbent, Michael D Higgins. His election campaign expenses were reported as more than €360,000.
Conor Power, director of elections for President Higgins' re-election bid in 2018 said that this campaign was unique as it was the first time a sitting president was campaigning for a second term since Éamon de Valera in the 1960s.
Mr Power said that President Higgins was "extremely popular" in 2018 and therefore "fundraising was not the most difficult."
The campaign also had a lot of merchandising that it was able to raise money from.
"Certain spends in a campaign are preordained," Mr Power said, citing posters and advertising on both traditional and social media platforms.
"You have to reach people where they are," Mr Power said, "whether that be by posters, by leafleting and then canvassing."
"People want to meet the candidates, that's a big issue and a part of any spend."
Mr Power said he doesn't feel there is any one particular expense that is vital to a campaign.
"A campaign spend has to be balanced around all the different means of communication and means of getting people to meet the candidate," he said.
Election literature of the past
Alan Kinsella has been collecting Irish election literature since he was 12 years old and his collection for the Irish presidency goes back to the 1930s.
One thing that is clear from looking at the literature is that the bid for the Irish presidency is a personality-driven race rather than party-driven.
"Dev, Erskine Childers, Adi Roach, Mary Robinson, Brian Lenihan, Liadh Ní Riada and Michael D Higgins - none of them have the party logo," Mr Kinsella said, referring to his collection of leaflets.
"Mary McAleese is the only person to have won a presidential election using the party logo and actually she was a candidate for Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats," he added.
Although Michael D Higgins and Mary Robinson both used the Labour Party rose, neither used the Labour Party itself in their election material.

Fine Gael battle for presidential nomination set to reopen
Fine Gael is to open a second nomination process for the presidency, with two senior party members — who previously ruled out a run for the Áras — set to battle it out for the candidacy. The sudden withdrawal of Mairead McGuinness on health grounds has left Fine Gael in disarray, but former social protection minister Heather Humphreys is expected to announce her intention to seek the nomination this week. Ms Humphreys, who opted not to contest last year's general election, said in May that she would not run for the Áras following her retirement to spend more time with her family. However, in the last few days she has indicated she is considering joining the race, with sources saying she is in the process of building a campaign team. Three Independent ministers back Ms Humphreys A potential run by Ms Humphreys has already received the backing of three independent ministers, with Michael Healy Rae saying he would back her "wholeheartedly", with Seán Canney saying he hoped Ms Humphreys would consider a run, while Noel Grealish said that she would be an "excellent" president. Former GAA president and Ireland South MEP Seán Kelly is also reconsidering his position and could spark an internal vote. Mr Kelly ruled himself out in July but, following the withdrawal of Ms McGuinness, he said over the weekend the "goalposts have now changed". Within the party, there is a belief that Mr Kelly was 'very interested' in pursuing the nomination last time around and would be once more. However, some believe the time constraints could mean he stands aside for Ms Humphreys. Former GAA president and MEP Seán Kelly is also considering a run for the Áras, saying over the weekend that 'the goalposts have now changed' since the withdrawal of Fine Gael nominee Mairead McGuinness. One member of the party's executive, Dublin MEP Regina Doherty, said if there were two candidates, the party should have a competition. Ms Doherty told RTÉ's This Week while the timeframe was "tight" and Fine Gael is "under time pressure" she said the party was confident it could run a contest. "Time is of the essence, lots of people are still on their holidays is what maybe makes it a little more difficult. "We will deal with whatever is put in front of us. We will open the contest and we will see how many contenders there are and then decisions will be made based on timelines thereafter," she said. Ms Doherty denied that the previous withdrawals of Mr Kelly and Ms Humphreys from the race would be a negative in the eyes of the public. She said those decisions had been made in a context which has now changed, a feeling which is echoed in Fine Gael. "Heather Humphreys or Sean Kelly are not second choices," a party source said. Fianna Fáil faces 'changed landscape' While Fine Gael sources say they would prefer longer to have a replacement in place, the party is ahead of both Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin, neither of which has confirmed if it will run a candidate at all. The withdrawal of Ms McGuinness has 'completely changed the landscape', a Fianna Fáil source said, with one saying that Ms Humphreys would 'be a different challenge altogether'. A Fianna Fáil TD said, however, that they could not foresee a situation in which the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party supports a coalition 'unity' candidate. Fianna Fáil is expected to name its candidate in September. Sinn Féin may back Catherine Connolly Within Sinn Féin, sources said, there is a growing belief that the party will support Galway West TD Catherine Connolly rather than run its own candidate. Ms McGuinness's withdrawal means Ms Connolly is the only candidate who at present has the requisite support to be on the ballot to succeed Michael D Higgins later this year.

Europeans to back Zelensky in Washington as Trump presses Ukraine deal
European leaders will join the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet Donald Trump in Washington later today, they said, seeking to shore up Mr Zelensky's position as the US president presses Ukraine to accept a quick peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years. Mr Trump is leaning on Mr Zelensky to strike an agreement after he met Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Alaska and emerged more aligned with Russia on seeking a peace deal instead of a ceasefire first. "If peace is not going to be possible here and this is just going to continue on as a war, people will continue to die by the thousands ... we may unfortunately wind up there, but we don't want to wind up there," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with CBS' "Face the Nation." Mr Trump promised "BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA" in a social media post without specifying what this might be. Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's envoy to international organisations in Vienna, said Russia agreed that any peace agreement on Ukraine must provide security guarantees to Kyiv. "Many leaders of #EU states emphasise that a future peace agreement should provide reliable security assurances or guarantees for Ukraine," Mr Ulyanov said on social media platform X. "Russia agrees with that. But it has equal right to expect that Moscow will also get efficient security guarantees." Top Trump officials hinted that the fate of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region - which is already mostly under Russian control - was on the line, while some sort of defensive pact was also on the table. "We were able to win the following concession, that the United States could offer Article 5-like protection," Mr Trump envoy Steve Witkoff told CNN's "State of the Union", suggesting this would be in lieu of Ukraine seeking NATO membership. Mr Witkoff said it was "the first time we had ever heard the Russians agree to that." Article 5 of NATO's founding treaty enshrines the principle of collective defence, in which an attack on any member is considered an attack on all. That pledge may not be enough to sway Ukraine to sign over Donbas. Ukraine's borders were already meant to be guaranteed when Ukraine surrendered a nuclear arsenal in 1994, which proved to be little deterrent when Russia absorbed Crimea in 2014 and launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. The war has killed or wounded more than one million people. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted a meeting of allies yesterday to bolster Mr Zelensky's hand, hoping in particular to lock down robust security guarantees for Ukraine that would include a US role. The Europeans are eager to help Mr Zelensky avoid a repeat of his last Oval Office meeting in February when Mr Trump and Vice President JD Vance gave the Ukrainian leader a public dressing-down, accusing him of being ungrateful and disrespectful. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will also travel to Washington, as will Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who has played rounds of golf with Mr Trump this year, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, an admirer of many of Mr Trump policies. European show of solidarity European leaders at the meeting projected unity, welcoming US talk of a security guarantee but stressing no discussions over territory could take place without Ukrainian involvement and clear arrangements to safeguard the rest of Ukraine's land. Some called for an immediate ceasefire, which Mr Trump originally said he was trying to secure during his summit with Mr Putin. Mr Trump later changed course and agreed with the Russians that peace negotiations could come without a ceasefire, an idea dismissed by some of Ukraine's European allies. "You cannot negotiate peace under falling bombs," Poland's foreign ministry said in a statement. A joint communique released by Britain, France and Germany after the meeting said their leaders were ready "to deploy a reassurance force once hostilities have ceased, and to help secure Ukraine's skies and seas and regenerate Ukraine's armed forces." Some European countries, led by Britain and France, have been working since last year on such a plan, but others in the region remain reluctant to become involved militarily. Mr Zelensky said on X there had been "clear support for Ukraine's independence and sovereignty" at the meeting."Everyone agrees that borders must not be changed by force." He said any prospective security guarantees "must really be very practical, delivering protection on land, in the air, and at sea, and must be developed with Europe's participation." Mr Rubio said both Russia and Ukraine would need to make concessions to reach a peace deal and security guarantees for Ukraine would be discussed. He also said there must be additional consequences for Russia if no deal was reached. "I'm not saying we're on the verge of a peace deal, but I am saying that we saw enough movement to justify a follow-up meeting with Mr Zelensky and the Europeans, enough movement for us to dedicate even more time to this," Mr Rubio told broadcaster CBS. Mr Putin briefed his close ally, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, about the Alaska talks, and also spoke with Kazakhstan's president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Mr Trump said Ukraine should make a deal to end the war because "Russia is a very big power, and they're not." After the Alaska summit, Mr Trump phoned the Ukrainian leader and told him the Kremlin chief had offered to freeze most front lines if Ukraine ceded all of Donetsk, a source familiar with the matter said. Mr Zelensky rejected the demand.

That was certainly the case with one high-profile exponent of the Irish language, presidential hopeful Catherine Connolly, who dropped in for a browse and a chat with owners and best friends Gillian de Faoite and Nina Shelton. Mothers of autistic children, the Wexford women founded the company with the aim of making sensory-friendly clothing for both children and adults and, naturally, being Gaelgeoirí themselves, the Irish language certainly played a part in their cool and colourful designs.
