GRS accuses Warisan of hypocrisy

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Warisan's claim it wants to contest all 73 seats in the coming state election so as to block peninsula-based parties interfering in Sabah politics smacks of hypocrisy, says GRS Information Chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. He recalled the party's action in teaming up with peninsula-based Umno in the failed attempt to unseat the Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor-led State Government in January 2023.

Joniston, who is also Parti Bersatu (PBS) Information Chief said while Warisan has the right to contest all 73 state seats, politics should not be reduced to a game of one-upmanship. 'Even in Sarawak, PBB could govern independently but chose to form GPS for a more inclusive state government,' said the Kiulu assemblyman during a meet-the-people session in Kampung Ranau-Ranau in his constituency.
Advertisement He also said political stability from the very first day after polling is critical to ensuring that the government can immediately focus on serving the people. Joniston stressed that Sabah's political realities demand an end to post-election horse-trading, which risks delaying the urgent work of governing. 'We must be realistic. The priority is to have a stable government from day one, without endless bargaining or prolonged negotiations after the election. 'The sooner we have clarity, the sooner we can get to work,' he said. He noted that just as Gabungan Rakyat Sabah works closely with Pakatan Harapan (PH) today, such cooperation safeguards Sabah's voice at the federal level while ensuring the state remains steady in its own governance. He stressed that the partnership is built on mutual respect, with Sabah's leadership and decision-making firmly in the hands of GRS. 'When the state and federal governments can work in sync, Sabah gains in funding, development, and policy support. That's what matters to our people,' he said. Joniston said only with stability can the government fully focus on solving pressing issues, from improving rural infrastructure to ensuring a reliable water and electricity supply and creating more economic opportunities for the people. He added that consistency in principles is essential to earn and keep public trust, especially when safeguarding Sabah's autonomy. Sabah PH-GRS seat talks still unsettled
TAWAU (Aug 12): Negotiations on seat allocations between Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) for the 17th state election remain unresolved. Sabah DAP deputy chairman Datuk Chan Foong Hin dismissed claims that GRS demanded 50 seats while PH would contest 23, labelling them 'political speculation'. 'The seat negotiations are not finalised. I don't even know the numbers,' said Chan, who is also Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister. 'We'll enter the 'ring' respectfully once a decision is made.' He was speaking to reporters after officiating at a pepper cultivation promotion programme here Tuesday. Commenting on speculation that the election (PRN17) could be held on September 7 following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's planned visit to Sabah, the Kota Kinabalu MP stated the dissolution date falls under the Chief Minister's authority. 'I don't know when the Prime Minister will visit, let alone the dissolution date.' Separately, Chan expressed Sabah DAP's confidence in defending all six seats it won in the last election, including Sri Tanjung and Elopura – now held by Warisan after the incumbents defected. Earlier, Chan said the local pepper industry recorded continuous price increases in the first seven months of this year. He said the average price for black pepper has increased by 51 per cent to RM27,240 per tonne compared to RM18,066 per tonne last year. 'Meanwhile, the average price for white pepper also increased by 43 per cent to RM37,407 per tonne compared to RM26,164 per tonne last year. 'This encouraging pepper price trend is expected to persist until the third quarter of this year following the recent strengthening of the ringgit,' he said. He said the pepper commodity is an economic resource generator for 39,449 pepper farmers in Malaysia who cultivate about 8,293 hectares of pepper. 'The total includes 248 farmers in Sabah who cultivate 41 hectares of pepper plantation. I encourage more Sabahans to take the opportunity to get involved in pepper cultivation to increase their income. 'I am of the view that the development of pepper cultivation in Sabah can be implemented by taking into account the advantages of the terrain and hilly topography suitable for pepper cultivation,' he said. Chan said the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities together with the Malaysian Pepper Board are committed and actively working to guide pepper cultivation entrepreneurs in this country, including through outreach programmes such as in-situ training and Tuesday's programme.

Russia makes sudden advance in Ukraine before Trump-Putin summit, maps show

Russian Defence Ministry/Handout via REUTERS MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian forces have made a sudden thrust into eastern Ukraine near the coal mining town of Dobropillia, a move that may be designed to increase the pressure on Kyiv to cede land as the U.S. and Russian presidents prepare to meet. Ukraine's authoritative DeepState war map showed on Tuesday that Russian forces had advanced by at least 10 km (six miles) north in two prongs in recent days, part of their drive to take full control of Ukraine's Donetsk region. The advance is one of the most dramatic in the last year. DeepState said the Russians had surged forward near three villages on a section of the frontline associated with the Ukrainian towns of Kostyantynivka and Pokrovsk, which Moscow is trying to encircle, exploiting Kyiv's lack of manpower. "The situation is quite chaotic, as the enemy, having found gaps in the defence, is infiltrating deeper, trying to quickly consolidate and accumulate forces for further advancement," DeepState said on its Telegram channel. U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss a possible deal to end the war in Ukraine when they meet in Alaska on Friday. Unconfirmed media reports say Putin has told Trump he wants Ukraine to hand over the part of the Donetsk region that Russia does not control. Ukrainian military spokesperson Viktor Trehubov said only small groups were penetrating defensive lines, and that this did not amount to a breakthrough. "Forwardmost Russian units have reportedly reached the Dobropillia – Kramatorsk road T0514 and Russian infiltration groups have also been reported near Dobropillia proper," he wrote on X. RUSSIA MAY GAIN LEVERAGE FOR TRUMP TALKS Tatarigami_UA, a former Ukrainian army officer whose Frontelligence Insight analysis tracks the conflict, posted: "In both 2014 and 2015, Russia launched major offensives ahead of negotiations to gain leverage. The current situation is serious, but far from the collapse some suggest." Sergei Markov, a former Kremlin adviser, said the Russians had been able to advance due to "a partial collapse in the front" due to Ukraine's shortage of soldiers. Ukraine has redeployed elite forces to try to thwart the advance, Russia's Interfax news agency and Ukrainian war bloggers reported. "This breakthrough is like a gift to Putin and Trump during the negotiations," Markov said, suggesting it could increase pressure on Kyiv to cede some land to prevent the Russian army eventually taking the rest of Donetsk by force. To do that, though, Russian forces would first need to take control of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka and Kostiantynivka - four places Russian military analysts call "fortress cities". Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has publicly pushed back against the idea of ceding territory to Russia, saying any peace deal must be a just one. Bohdan Krotevych, former chief of staff of Ukraine's Azov brigade and a National Guard lieutenant colonel, took to X late on Monday to warn Zelenskiy of the threat, saying the frontline in the area was "a complete mess". GRS-PH cooperation formula to continue - Hajiji

RANAU (Aug 12): Chief Minister and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor reiterated that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) supreme council has agreed to maintain the present formula of cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming state election. He said history has shown that a state government needs to have a strong relationship with the Federal Government. 'We want strong ties with the Federal Government. We want stability and we hope the people will understand that we are doing the best for them. To bring prosperity to them,' he said this during the ground-breaking ceremony for the Paginatan new township held at the Nunuk Ragang Memorial open-air hall, near here on Tuesday. The Chief Minister said the present GRS-PH State Government's track record of bringing progress to Sabah has been proven. 'We have more than 400 initiatives under the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya development agenda, and about 94 per cent of them have already been implemented,' he said. Hajiji said this was contrary to the opposition's claim, which he said was intended to pull wool over the people's eyes. Hajiji said the GRS-PH government had approved numerous assistance programmes for the state's education development and people's prosperity, which had never been done by other state governments before. 'This year alone, we are giving monthly assistance of RM300 to nearly 100,000 hardcore poor, and this initiative will be continued if the people returned the mandate to GRS-PH in the coming election,' he said. He also said that the GRS-PH State Government had succeeded in getting greater participation in the oil and gas sector through the historic signing of the Commercial Collaborative Agreement (CCA) with Petronas in 2021. Earlier, he said that the State Government, through the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (SHTDA), is committed to continuing its agenda of addressing urban and rural poverty in the state through the new township development programme. He said the long-awaited Paginatan New Township project is expected to drive the local economy in the area, in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development roadmap, which at its core, aims at prioritising the well-being of the people and improving their quality of life. The 200-acre new township, located approximately 43 km from here, will be developed in five phases, involving the construction of various important amenities, including government offices, shops, low-cost housing, multi-purpose hall, library, health centre, market, police and fire stations. Once completed, the people in Paginatan would no longer have to go to Ranau or Telupid to deal with government departments, he said. Hajiji also assured that issues affecting the people in Paginatan constituency that were raised by its assemblyman, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, would be addressed.
