Erik Menendez hospitalized with ‘serious condition,' may not return to prison
Menendez has reportedly been undergoing treatment for kidney stones at an outside medical facility since Friday, according to TMZ. Sources told the outlet that California Gov. Gavin Newsom is currently reviewing the change in medical status to determine if a 'prison furlough' is appropriate.
Menendez's attorney Mark Geragos said the condition is so serious that he's calling for his client's immediate release ahead of a parole hearing next month.
'I just think he should be parole furloughed,' Geragos told TMZ. 'He could be medically furloughed in advance of the hearing so that he can work with the parole attorney and get up to speed and be ready and do it and give it his best shot. I think that it's the only fair and equitable thing to do.'
Menendez, 54, and brother Lyle Menendez, 57, were initially sentenced to life without the possibility for parole after two high-profile trials for the 1989 murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, at their Beverly Hills, California, home.
The brothers said they feared for their lives following years of sexual abuse by their father, who they allege threatened to kill them if they revealed the abuse.
After serving 35 years behind bars, a judge in May reduced the brothers' sentences to 50 years to life. Under California state law, they became immediately eligible for release because they committed the crime when they were under the age of 26.
A parole hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21 and 22, though the process could be expedited for Erik Menendez, depending on what the governor decides about his medical condition. It's unclear how long a furlough would last, though it could mean Menendez would not return to prison given that the hearing is only a month away.
During their resentencing, Judge Michael Jesic said he was impressed with the brothers' behavior while behind bars at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
'Life without parole gives an inmate no hope, no reason to do anything good,' Jesic said. 'I give them a lot of credit. It's remarkable what they did when they had no hope of getting out.'
Newsom previously indicted he was open to granting the brothers clemency, but wouldn't make a decision until after the parole hearing is complete.

Teen arrested after 4 vehicle fires at 2 auto body shops on Detroit's west side
A 13-year-old boy is in custody after police on Detroit's west side found four vehicles that were damaged by fires at two different auto collision shops early Saturday, according to police. Officers were on patrol in the area of Greenfield and Schoolcraft roads around 1 a.m. when they noticed a fire at one of the collision shops. "We understand, I understand as a father, it's not easy knowing where your kid is at all times," Captain Marcus Thirkill with the Detroit Police Department said, "but we're really asking parents to hone in, to know the location of your kids after curfew hours." Earlier this month, CBS News Detroit learned Mayor Mike Duggan's office wants to increase the amount of money parents are fined if their child is arrested. Right now, a first-time offense only carries a fine of $75. If approved by City Council, Duggan wants to increase that amount to $250.

1 person killed, another injured after crash in Butler County
One person was killed and another was injured after a motorcycle collided with a vehicle in Washington Township, Butler County, on Saturday. State police out of the Butler barracks were called to a one-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Oneida Valley Road just after 1 p.m. The injured victim was transported from the scene with "suspected serious injuries," state police said. The roadway remained closed as of Saturday afternoon between Annisville Road and Old Brick Road while the crash was being investigated. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

3 charged in armed South Side kidnapping of 2-year-old girl to remain in jail
Three people are facing several charges in the kidnapping of a two-year-old girl who was found safe earlier this week. Prosecutors said the child's mother kidnapped her from her grandmother's house at gunpoint, with the help of two armed men. All three appeared together in front of a judge Saturday afternoon. The judge said the child's mother is the mastermind in what he called a kidnapping scheme that involved guns, death threats, and even leveraging her child's location for her own release. In court, prosecutors said 22-year-old Angelique Mobley and 33-year-old Lamon Weathers were dating during the kidnapping. They said Mobley and Weathers, 27-year-old Matthew Price, and another unknown person somehow gained access to the 2-year-old's grandmother's building near 48th Street and Michigan Wednesday morning. The judge said they had cased the building before forcing their way in and threatening the child's great uncle and girlfriend at gunpoint before taking off with the grandmother's purse, keys, and car. Mobley was armed with a wrench while Weathers and Price had guns. The crew told police they ditched the grandmother's car before returning to their own car and taking off with Mobley's 2-year-old daughter. Prosecutors say they dropped the little girl off with a relative of Weathers in Danville, Illinois. After a quick Google search, the relative saw a news story about the missing child and called the police, which led to her rescue. Police caught up with Mobley and Weathers. Prosecutors said that's when Mobley told police she would tell them where her baby was if they let her go. The state also pointed to a Facebook live by Mobley in which she said she was going to take her child back from the grandmother. The judge expressed concerns about the background of the three. Mobley has two pending retail theft charges. Price, who said he's a full-time babysitter with a battery and gun arrest. And weathers, who was arrested in a security uniform and says he's an associate pastor, has seven felony convictions, including an aggravated assault charge he just pleaded guilty to earlier this month. On top of a kidnapping charge for all three, Mobley is facing residential burglary. Weathers and Price are charged with home invasion with a firearm. Price is also facing a stolen vehicle charge. All three were ordered to remain in jail. The judge said that Mobley, the child's mother, could expect a possible fourth charge of home invasion. They're all expected back in court later this week. It's unclear if the fourth person involved has been identified or arrested by police.
