Namma Metro
map now boasts a vibrant yellow. The long-awaited 19km elevated corridor from RV Road to Bommasandra, with 16 stations built at a cost of Rs 7,600 crore, was inaugurated Sunday by
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
, who flagged off the first train from Ragigudda station.
Earlier in the day, the PM also launched three Vande Bharat Express trains, including the Bengaluru-Belagavi service, which he said would boost trade and tourism in Belagavi. Services between Nagpur-Pune and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Amritsar were also launched.

Speaking at the inaugural event at the International Institute of Information Technology-Bengaluru, Modi, praising a new funding model for public infrastructure, said: "The likes of Infosys Foundation, Biocon, and Delta Electronics have provided part-funding for key Metro stations. He pointed to the scale of India's infrastructure growth since 2014 and said that from being limited to just five cities, Metro networks today span over 1,000km across 24 cities, making India home to the third-largest Metro network globally.
"Bengaluru has played a significant role in this transformation," he said, stressing that collaboration between the Centre and the states, coupled with "continuous reform efforts", would take Karnataka to new heights.
"Together, we will fulfil the vision of Viksit Bharat," he added.
Now & in future
Initially, three trains will operate at a frequency of 25 minutes. End-to-end travel is likely to cost Rs 60. At the beginning, the service is expected to carry 25,000 to 30,000 passengers per day. However, with full-fledged operations by March 2026, the Yellow Line is projected to serve 2.5 lakh passengers daily, helping Namma Metro's overall ridership cross the 10 lakh mark.
Prior to boarding the train, officials briefed the PM on the Yellow Line's alignment and features, including the construction of Jayadeva Interchange station, the tallest Metro station in the city with a six-level structure.
In March 2023, while launching the extension of the Purple Line from KR Pura to Whitefield, Modi had used the National Common Mobility Card to access the paid area of the Namma Metro. This time, he purchased a QR code ticket using a vending machine at the station.
The CM and DCM also used QR tickets for their travel. During the journey, the PM interacted with a group of students who had the rare chance of travelling on the inaugural train.
Modi also laid foundation for Phase III of the Metro project — a 45km network covering JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura on the west side of Outer Ring Road, and Hosahalli to Kadabagere on Magadi Road.
Bangalore Rural MP CN Manjunath said: "Both the central and state govts together have achieved this. I congratulate both govts. For health purposes, we need BMW — bicycle, Metro and walking. This reduces pollution and traffic congestion." Surya termed the inauguration a "day of victory" after six years of delays due to land acquisition, Covid, and trainset issues.

India plans to open uranium sector to private players to boost nuclear expansion

The move aims to attract billions of dollars and support the country's ambitious goal to expand nuclear power capacity 12 fold by 2047 India is planning to open its uranium mining, import, and processing sector to private companies, ending a decades-long state monopoly, according to a Reuters report, citing government sources. This move aims to attract billions of dollars and support the country's ambitious goal to expand nuclear power capacity 12 fold by 2047. In April, Reuters had reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is also planning to relax requirements to allow foreign players to take a minority stake in power plants. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Currently, India's government tightly controls uranium mining and processing due to concerns over nuclear material misuse, radiation safety, and strategic security. It will, however, continue to manage spent uranium reprocessing and plutonium waste handling, in line with international norms. To meet rising demand for nuclear fuel amid this expansion, the government is drafting a regulatory framework that would allow private Indian firms to participate in mining, importing, and processing uranium. The policy is expected to be announced within the current fiscal year, reported Reuters. In addition, private companies may be permitted to supply critical control system equipment for nuclear power plants, sources said. Globally, countries such as Canada, South Africa, and the United States already allow private firms to mine and process uranium. Domestic supply not enough According to government data, India has an estimated 76,000 tonnes of uranium — enough to power 10,000 megawatts of nuclear energy for 30 years. However, sources cautioned that domestic reserves would cover only about 25% of the fuel needed to support the country's planned nuclear expansion. The remaining demand would require imports, along with a significant boost to uranium processing capacity. In its February 1 budget announcement, the government revealed its intention to open up the nuclear sector, though it did not provide specifics. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The move has since prompted several major Indian conglomerates to begin drafting investment plans. Still, experts warn that implementing the policy may face hurdles, as revising existing legislation could prove legally and politically complex. 'It's a major and bold initiative by the Indian Government which is critical for achieving the target,' Reuters quoted Charudatta Palekar, independent power sector consultant, as saying. 'The challenge will be to define quickly the rules of engagement with private sector,' Palekar added. New Delhi will have to change five laws, including the ones regulating mining and electricity sectors and India's foreign direct investment policy to enable private participation in many identified activities, the sources said. Kanpur leather industry hit by US tariff hike, Rs 2,000 crore exports stalled

Kanpur's leather industry, a major export hub, is staring at a severe crisis after the United States sharply increased import duties on Indian leather goods to 60%—double the rate imposed on China and far higher than Pakistan (19%) and Bangladesh (20%). Exporters fear the move could wipe out nearly all of Kanpur's annual Rs 2,000 crore leather exports to the SAY BUYERS BACKING OUTJafar Iqbal, a Kanpur-based exporter and factory owner, said shipments have been halted as American buyers withdraw from contracts. 'In May, when tariffs were 10%, we agreed to bear half the cost to retain orders. Now, with the new rates, neither side can afford it. Five of our containers are ready, but we don't know what to do,' he told India Today BLOW FOR THE INDUSTRYNaiyar Jamal, another exporter, said the sector was already struggling under environmental regulations such as Namami Gange before being hit by the tariff hike. Despite mounting losses, he expressed support for the government's stance against US trade TO 10 LAKH JOBS Leather trader Javed Iqbal warned the tariff hike could devastate Kanpur and neighbouring Unnao, where the industry employs nearly 10 lakh people. Lower tariffs for Pakistan, China, Vietnam, and Cambodia are expected to draw away American buyers. 'We stand with the government, even if it means bearing heavy losses in the national interest,' he HALTED DESPITE FESTIVE ORDERSPrerna Verma, a leather accessories exporter, said confusion over the new policy has brought production to a near standstill. Demand in recent years has already fallen to 60% of previous levels, forcing some units to lay off Iraqi, Chairman of the Council for Leather Exports (Central Region), said that although Christmas orders have arrived, production for the US market has been halted. He met Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in Delhi two to three days ago, where the government discussed possible relief measures—such as interest subsidies—in the case of a 25% tariff. However, with the import duty now set at 50%, such measures are unlikely to suffice. 'Buyers and sellers can manage an extra 5–10% cost but such a steep hike is beyond anyone's capacity," he said.- EndsTune InMust Watch
