Cloyne clinch hard-fought win as Carrigaline left to rue missed chances
A huge shock in the Co-Op Superstores Premier Intermediate hurling championship with last year's finalists Carrigaline going down to Cloyne at sun-drenched Cobh on Sunday.
There is little doubt Carrigaline were wasteful in front of goal in the first half but take nothing away from Cloyne they battled as if their lives depended on it and were worthy winners.
Carrigaline looked a side on a mission in the opening exchanges and four unanswered points in the space of five minutes had Cloyne on the ropes.
Indeed, looking at the stats of the opening eight minutes Carrigaline had accumulated five points and six wides as some of their shooting was very poor.
In fairness Cloyne kept plugging away and once the energetic James O'Brien split the posts in the eighth minute they settled into their stride.
A superb Brian Kelleher point gave Carrigaline a four-point lead in the 16th minute but Cloyne responded like a team possessed, winning the majority of dirty ball for the next 11 minutes.
In this period Carrigaline failed to score and with the sides tied in the 25th minute Cloyne were awarded a penalty.
Ashley Walsh placed a perfect assist to Brian Walsh and just as he was about to pull the trigger, goalkeeper Cian McCarthy hauled him down inside the square.
Brian Walsh stepped up for the resultant penalty and he finished it with sheer ferocity to the roof of the net.
It was fitting the hard-working Ashley Walsh would finish the half with a stunning point as Cloyne went in at the break commanding a four-point lead, 1-10 †o 0-9.
Carraigaline made three changes at the break as their management couldn't have been happy with their 10 wides tally.
Consecutive points from Kelleher and Eanna Desmond was just the start Carrigaline needed.
Cloyne continued to win the crucial dirty ball and when Steve Beausang found the back of the net midway through the half Carrigaline looked in trouble.
In truth Carrigaline kept huffing and puffing and Cloyne's Brian Walsh was on hand to drill a third goal in the 59th minute.
A late Rhys McCarthy goal gave Carrigaline a ray of hope, but time wasn't on their side as Cloyne secured the all-important win.
Credit to the Cloyne coach Killian Cronin he had his team well-prepared for a game that few pundits would have given them a chance of winning.

Brian Roche the difference as Bride Rovers gain revenge on Blarney in Cork SAHC
Bride Rovers 1-22 Blarney 1-15 Bride Rovers recorded a deserved win over Blarney in Group 3 of the Co-op Superstores Cork SAHC in Pairc Uí Rinn on Sunday afternoon. Blarney had gotten the better of Rovers in the semi-final of this competition the past two seasons, but this day belonged to the Rathcormac/Bartlemy outfit. In Brian Roche they had the game's best player as he hit 0-7 from play, his twin brother, Eoin, was excellent in defence alongside Cillian Tobin while Adam Walsh's performance against the wind in the first have gave them the platform they needed. Mark Coleman, operating at centre-forward, gave Blarney the lead with an early free. He then made that start even better when he broke on to a Paul Hallissey puckout before finishing smartly past Cian Hogan for the game's opening goal. The following ten minutes were pedestrian enough, Adam Walsh, David Barry, Shane O'Connor and Conor Barry pointed for Rovers, Coleman and Alan McEvoy clipped a couple of scores for Blarney, and they led by 1-3 to 0-4 at the end of the opening quarter. Walsh had showed his potential for destruction when assisting David Barry's point after a mighty fetch, and in the second quarter Bride Rovers hit him early and often, with Cillian Tobin freed up to supply the missiles. He hit 0-4 off play, went close to a major and Blarney just could not handle him. His menace freed up Brian Roche for a couple of points while Conor Barry and Louie Roche also found their range as Bride Rovers looked far the more convincing team. Eoin Roche was curtailing the influence of Shane Barrett, and all Blarney could muster were points from Cathal McCarthy, Jerry Murphy and a Coleman free to leave them trailing by 0-13 to 1-6 as they turned to play into the breeze in the second half. Points from Walsh and McCarthy sandwiched a Walsh free on the resumption before Bride Rovers struck for a crucial score. Another Tobin delivery landed around the D, and this time Conleith Ryan broke on to it before slipping it past Hallissey for an excellent goal. That put six between them, and that was still the margin when the game entered the final quarter with McCarthy, McEvoy and Eoghan Kirby on target for Blarney, while Brian Roche had two and Walsh one for Rovers to make it 1-17 to 1-11. Three points from Coleman then outdid two from the outstanding Roche before a Denis McSweeney point left four between them with seven to play. That man Brian Roche was on hand again for Bride Rovers though, as his seventh of the day brought the margin to five before a monstrous free from 'keeper Cian Hogan made it a six-point game again with five to play. From there, the game petered out to its inevitable conclusion. Shane O'Connor put a cherry on top of a great day for the Rovers with his second of the day, as his side will go into their next game against Courcey Rovers with two points on the board, while Blarney will seek improvement before their clash with Watergrasshill who also had a win in their opening game. Scorers for Bride Rovers: A Walsh (0-8, 0-4 f), B Roche (0-7), C Ryan (1-0), C Barry and S O'Connor (0-2 each), D Barry, L Roche, C Hogan (free) (0-1 each. Scorers for Blarney: M Coleman (1-7, 0-5 f), C McCarthy (0-3), A McEvoy (0-2), E Kirby, D McSweeney, J Murphy (0-1 each). BRIDE ROVERS: C Hogan; D Cashman, E Roche, J Peters; C Hazelwood, C Tobin, S O'Connor; C O'Sullivan, D Barry; C Ryan, B Roche, K Kearney; C Barry, A Walsh, L Roche. Subs: K Cotter for Peters (blood, 44-45), R O'Connell for Kearney (48). BLARNEY: P Hallissey; D Murphy, D Quill, S Crowley; S Mullane, P Crowley, A McEvoy; O Hegarty, S Mulcahy; D McSweeney, M Coleman (c), E Kirby; C McCarthy, S Barrett, J Murphy. Subs: C Power for Quill (inj, 8), C Barrett for Murphy (46), W Crowley for Kirby (48), D Manlon for Mulcahy (60). Referee: Ciaran O'Regan (Ballyhea).

Injury-hit Castlelyons have enough in tank to fend off Bishopstown
Cork SAHC: Castlelyons 0-24 Bishopstown 0-17 Castlelyons had to show true resilience before securing maximum points against Bishopstown in a disappointing opening round of the Co-Op Superstores Senior A hurling championship at Blarney on Saturday. Not the greatest game that will be witnessed in the championship this season but Castlelyons will be relieved their injury-stricken side had enough in the tank to secure the points. Following their relegation last season Bishopstown were hoping to get this campaign off to a winning start but despite putting in a wholehearted first-half performance they simply went into meltdown in the second period. The opening exchanges were frantic with Bishopstown making a reasonable start with a classy David Quaid point edging them ahead. Indeed, the opening minutes were not kind to Castlelyons as they lost Barry Murphy in the opening minute and Eoin Maye was also replaced with an injury in the ninth minute. The first clear goal opportunity came Castlelyons' way but just as Dave Morris was about to pull the trigger, he was hooked by the Town corner back Michael Murphy. Eventually the Imokilly side got up and running with consecutive points from Alan Fenton and Anthony Spillane in the seventh and eighth minutes. In fairness Bishopstown were hooking and blocking and with the sides level midway through the half they were awarded a penalty. Up stepped James Scally and despite striking the resultant penalty well, the Castlelyons goalkeeper Jack Barry produced a wonderful save. The first half was lethargic with little spark shown by either side but for some strange reason in the second quarter Castlelyons were outbattled and saw Bishopstown surge into a two point lead in the 28th minute. In the closing minutes Anthony Cotter got in behind the Town defence but in truth his tame shot went straight at the goalkeeper, who cleared to safety with little fuss. Just when it looked that the teams would go in at the break on parity Conor Hegarty struck an outrageous point from an acute angle that gave Bishopstown a 0-11 to 0-10 lead. It was evident from the early exchanges of the restart the tempo had increased with the sides sharing six points in the opening five minutes. Suddenly Bishopstown lost their shape as Castlelyons began registering points for fun and, with the city side failing to score for 15 minutes, they trailed by seven points with nine remaining. The one negative for Castlelyons in this half was the straight card picked up by David Morrison after the contact he made with the Bishopstown keeper chasing a high ball left the match referee with few options. We then witnessed Bishopstown continuing to play with a sweeper against 14 men which looked strange in a game they were trailing. The closing ten minutes weren't easy on the eye as the standard of hurling usually associated in this grade was nowhere to be seen. The next round in this group will be interesting with Castlelyons facing Ballyhea and Bishopstown take on Inniscarra who will need a much-improved display to keep their interest in this championship. Scorers for Castlelyons: A Fenton 0-9 (0-7f), A Spillane 0-4, D Morrison 0-3, D Tobin 0-2, K O'Leary 0-2, S Cotter, A O'Sullivan, J Kearney, C McCarthy (0-1 each). Scorers for Bishopstown: J Scally 0-6 (0-5f), B Murray 0-4, C Hegarty 0-3, D Quaid, R Foley, H Grant, C Murray (0-1 each). Castlelyons: J Barry; N O'Leary, C Barry, D Spillane; S Moroney, A O'Sullivan, P Roche; J Kearney, C McCarthy; E Maye, B Murphy, L Doocey; D Morrison, A Spillane, A Fenton. Subs: D Tobin for B Murphy (inj 1), S Cotter for E Mawe (inj 10), K O'Leary for C McCarthy (50), C McCarthy for L Doocey (inj 54). Bishopstown: C O'Donoghue; M Murphy, K McFadden, G Murphy; D Lester, D Quaid, D Murray; B Murray, C Hegarty; C Murray, H Grant, C O'Hara; R Foley, J Scally, L O'Driscoll.
