Inside the New California Restaurant Opening at La Cañada's Lush Descanso Gardens

Eater21-05-2025

Farmhouse, the new restaurant at Descanso Gardens from chef Rich Mead, opens on May 30, serving seasonal California fare for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch service. Occupying a former meeting room at the 150-acre urban oasis located in La Cañada-Flintridge, Farmhouse at Descanso Gardens adds a lush new dining experience for Northeast LA, Glendale, and Pasadena denizens. Mead opened Farmhouse at Roger's Gardens in 2016 with a similar approach to sustainability and seasonality, and he's brought on Adam Cherney (A.O.C., Pace, and Saltie Girl) to helm the kitchen at Descanso Gardens.
Descanso Gardens opened as a botanical garden when its prior owner, Elias Manchester Boddy, sold the property to Los Angeles County. Through the help of neighbors and a trust, the property was established as a public space in 1953 (Walt Disney allegedly had considered it for a site for Disneyland). Today, it draws nearly a million visitors a year with a number of historic buildings and long walkways of lush flora. Though there's a fee to enter or annual membership options, neither is required to enter the Farmhouse restaurant.
As for the food, Mead and Cherney will prepare salads, charcuterie boards, entrees, and desserts using local produce, like a grilled grass-fed culotte steak with Weiser Farms potatoes, asparagus, and cipollini onions. Coriander and cumin-spiced carrots are topped with burrata, pistachio, and mint, while seared salmon comes with ginger, leek, and Thai vinaigrette. Cocktails will employ ingredients from the adjacent gardens.
Artisan William Stranger used fallen trees to build the wraparound bar that offers nice views of the garden, and the whole space incorporates a timeless, indoor-outdoor vibe that should serve as a solid place to eat. Eventually, Farmhouse will host dinners using produce sourced from the gardens.
Farmhouse at Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada-Flintridge, California, 91011, and will be open weekdays for lunch and dinner, plus weekend brunch. The last table will be seated at 8:30 p.m.

Chicago James Beard honorees recommend one dish

At least six Chicagoans are up for James Beard Awards this year, offering a strong — if not our strongest — year since the awards started in 1991. In case you're wondering, Monica was nominated for six and Justin won two. But, we digress. Zoom in: To celebrate, we asked honorees to recommend one dish on their menu. Great Lakes chef nominees Erling Wu-Bower and Chris Jung of Maxwells Trading: Leek-stuffed pappardelle with crawfish, brandy and Nantua sauce for Wu-Bower. Clay pot mushroom rice with Yamagata koshihikari, shiitake, maitake and chestnut and blue oyster mushrooms for Jung. Thai Dang of HaiSous:"Caramelized fish sauce wings. They're addictive, packed full of flavor and gluten free. I love them with steamed jasmine rice," Dang tells Axios. "The sauce is made with caramelized sugar with fish sauce, then I add dried chili, garlic, scallion, and fresh Thai chili." Outstanding Bar nominee Mixologist and chef Julia Momosé of Kumiko: Yuzu koshō karaagé, a dish of twice fried chicken accented with fermented citrus and chili paste. Momosé recommends washing it down with The Seaflower cocktail made with Nikka Coffey gin, Dolin blanc vermouth, yuzu koshō, kabosu and lime juices rimmed with savory "ocean dust." Outstanding Restaurant nominee Chef Zachary Engel of Galit: "The obvious choice is our hummus," Engel tells Axios. "But our labneh (yogurt dip) is also representative of Galit's voice and style. Labneh with za'atar and olive oil is eaten all over the Middle East." American Classic Winner Lem's Bar-B-Q: The JBL Special featuring ribs, tips, a hot link, chicken and fries. Local Voice nominee Ashok Selvam, Chicago editor of Eater: Since the whole city is Selvam's menu, we asked for his current fave — Rendang Republic 's "Duck Inn-Do Hot Dog" featuring a Duck Inn chicken dog topped with sambal aioli, acar relish, fried shallot, cilantro and more.

3 Houston Restaurants to Try This Weekend: June 13

Each week, we'll provide a trusty list of recommendations to answer the most pressing of questions: 'Where should I eat?' Here are three places to check out this weekend in Houston. And if you need ideas on where to drink, here's our list of the hottest places to get cocktails in town. For a spread of Lebanese cuisine: Craft Pita 5172 Buffalo Speedway, Suite C, West University; 1920 Fountain View Drive, Briargrove Chef Rafael Nasr harnesses his Lebanese heritage and family traditions in this fast-casual, counter-service restaurant. There's cheesy man'oushe (Lebanese flatbread); creamy, spicy hummus; and irresistible Tex-Med Lebanese tacos topped with french fries (try the chicken with pickles and parsley). That's in addition to heaping pita sandwiches, salads, and rice and hummus bowls built with flavorful beef kafta, falafel, or slow-roasted chicken. A rich garlic aioli, hot sauce that adds a pleasant zing to any dish, and labneh ranch level up most plates. The food is already affordable — a family spread that feeds three to four people features a whole rotisserie chicken covered in Lebanese spices, a quart of hummus, pita bread or chips, a fattoush salad, and a choice of rice pilaf or Lebanese rice (a Lebanese version of dirty rice) for $55. Craft Pita has also recently launched brunch, serving a brunch sampler that includes soft scrambled eggs, dips, olives, and a half za'atar, half-cheese flatbread, and knafeh, a classic Lebanese dessert made with kataifi pastry, a cheese blend, and pistachios. (For more deals, visit during its weekday happy hour between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. when all its shareable starters are half-off and beer and wine are $4.) Don't skimp out on dessert or drinks — Lebanese wines by the glass or bottle, Turkish coffee and iced lattes, and stretchy booza are all on offer. Takeout here is a breeze, but don't be afraid to dine in and enjoy the spread in-house. For ice cream that infuses Asian diasporic flavors: Milk + Sugar Creamery 1848 Westheimer Road, Montrose; 1324 North Shepherd Drive, Heights; 5172 Buffalo Speedway, West University A double scoop at Milk + Sugar is essential. Brittany Britto Garley In Houston, where the weather is mostly hot and humid, ice cream is a treat year-round, especially when the scoop shops reflect some of the city's favorite flavors. Milk + Sugar taps into that with a case full of rich flavors that often include Asian diasporic flavors. Think Thai tea, a yum cha flavor featuring chrysanthemum and pandan swirl, and a seasonal milk tea ice cream. Diners can dig into other flavors, too, like the seasonal Love is Love (strawberry ice cream cake with confetti cake in celebration of Pride), the happy wife (a perfect combination of sweet cream ice cream and homemade almond pound cake), and a remarkably satisfying PB Cookies and Cream. Best of all, if making a decision is difficult, Milk + Sugar gives generous samples and offers the opportunity to half-scoop flavors (one scoop with two flavors). They're also super considerate of their lactose-intolerant fan base, and sell Lactaid pills at the register for 50 cents. For coffee drinks with the most flavorful cold foams: Slowpokes 3401 Canal Street, East End Whether you're in need of a coffee drink, wine, beer, or breakfast, Slowpokes has got you covered. Brittany Britto Garley Houston coffee shops keep popping up around the city, and though that could mean more competition, the more the merrier. Local cafe chain Slowpokes opened its most recent outpost in the East End, inviting diners into a space that's cozy and multi-faceted with plenty of outlets; different styles of seating (booths, bar, and tables); a full bar with beer and wine; a kick-ass playlist; and an all-day food menu that features bagel sandwiches, salads, flatbreads, a tantalizing baked brie dip, and pastries. Aside from blending their own beans in-house and potent cold brew, Slowpokes gets especially inventive with its cold foam, which changes depending on what the barista is feeling, or what the diner can dream up based on the homemade syrups available. Popular flavors have included ube and caramel apple butter, and, during a recent visit, creamy banana cold foam that tasted like Laffy Taffy. While topping it on coffee drinks is a popular choice (try your choice of cold foam atop the signature caramel and hazelnut-laden Slowpoke), a manager at Slowpokes tells Eater that people have been requesting the cold foam atop flavored sodas or Ramblers to make a refreshing Italian-style soda. Here, there are many possibilities. Don't leave without peeking into the bathrooms, which are decorated with wallpaper featuring the most adorable on-theme sloths and turtles. All the food trucks that will be at the Hopkins Food Truck Festival

All the food trucks that will be at the Hopkins Food Truck Festival originally appeared on Bring Me The News. Good smells are going to be wafting through Hopkins. The 2025 Hopkins Food Truck Festival lands on Saturday, June 21, touting more than 50 food trucks dishing up tacos and pizza, as well as crispy pork belly, green papaya salad, and donuts. The annual food truck gathering has food trucks lined up around downtown Hopkins on Main Street between 11th Avenue N and 8th Avenue S. However, it alights with more than access to a surplus of food trucks. It also offers a beer garden, family-friendly games, and live music from Jezebelle, Whiskey Stone, and Jacuzzi Puma. While that's all fun, the main attraction remains the food trucks. These are the trucks you'll find setting up shop in Hopkins on June 21. (At least, these are the ones announced so far. More will be added to hit the fest's 50+ food truck promise.)
