Mauricio Pochettino eyed for sensational Spurs return but key obstacle remains

Daily Mirror11 hours ago

Tottenham enjoyed a successful period with Mauricio Pochettino at the helm and he's being considered as a replacement for Ange Postecoglou - but finances may scupper any hope of a return
Mauricio Pochettino is being considered as the next Tottenham manager but it would take a mammoth fee to get him back to north London given he's currently in charge of the USA national team.
Daniel Levy is on the lookout for another new manager after sacking Ange Postecoglou on Friday. The Australian won the Europa League, but it wasn't enough to keep him in a job given a dire Premier League campaign, which saw them finish 17th.

A list of possible replacements has been drawn up with Pochettino, who led the club for five years, being linked with a return to the post he left in 2019.

The Argentine has since gone on to lead the likes of PSG and Chelsea but now finds himself in international management with the USA, who are looking forward to hosting the World Cup next year with Pochettino at the helm.
The BBC reports that if Tottenham wanted to get Pochettino out of his contract and back to Tottenham the compensation package they would have to pay would be one of the "biggest in football history".
That could leave them looking elsewhere despite there previously being talk of a return for Pochettino, who was axed just months after guiding the club to the final of the Champions League. Despite missing out on a trophy he consistently got Tottenham into the top four, finishing second in 2017.
He previously admitted a return was on his radar, but not right now: "I am in the USA, so I am not going to talk about that now - but what I said then I still, after six years or five years, feel in my heart. Yes, I would like one day to come back."
Brentford boss Thomas Frank is among the other names being considered to replacement Postecoglou. He's continued to work impressively in west London despite losing his best players annually, yet he's been able to ensure Brentford consolidate themselves in the top flight.
He has a £10million release clause though and Tottenham are also considering Fulham's Marco Silva. The Portuguese boss recently claimed he intends to remain as the Cottagers boss, but has been shortlisted.

Franck Ribery hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo over Ballon d'Or claim

Franck Ribery has hit back at Cristiano Ronaldo after the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward claimed that players need to win the Champions League in order to be in contention for the Ballon d'Or. Ronaldo has won the Ballon d'Or five times during his career, second only to Lionel Messi, who has won the award eight times. Ribery, meanwhile, did not win the Ballon d'Or during his career and the closest he came was a third-placed finish behind second-placed Messi and the winner Ronaldo in 2013. The former France international was tipped to pull off a huge upset by beating Ronaldo and Messi to the award after he won five trophies with Bayern Munich that year, including the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Ribery was also named UEFA's Best Player in Europe off the back of his impressive performances for Bayern. But it was Ronaldo who won the award despite failing to win a trophy with Real Madrid in 2013, although he did score 66 goals in 56 appearances. Speaking during a press conference on Saturday, Ronaldo was asked about this year's race to win the Ballon d'Or and the 40-year-old insisted that only Champions League winners should be picking up the individual award. 'The individual awards have lost some consensus, I can't say anything about who should win,' Ronaldo said. 'In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win. 'But there is no consensus. I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what goes on behind the scenes. 'Lamine [Yamal] could win, like [Ousmane] Dembele or Vitinha, other emerging players… but individual awards are irrelevant.' However, Ribery hit back at Ronaldo's comments on social media as he posted a message on Instagram which read: 'So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or?' More Trending Ribery's message was accompanied by three laughing emojis. In an interview with Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in 2022, Ribery criticised the decision to give the Ballon d'Or to Ronaldo in 2013. 'It was unfair,' Ribery said. 'It was an incredible season for me and I should have won it. They extended the time for votes, and something strange happened. I felt that it was a political choice.' Wardley vs Huni LIVE: Boxing fight stream, latest updates and undercard results

The WBA interim title is up for grabs for Wardley in his first fight since following a thrilling draw with Frazer Clarke by knocking out his rival in brutal fashion in the opening round of a rematch in Riyadh in October, having given up his British belt in pursuit of a world title chance. He was originally supposed to face Jarrell Miller tonight, only for the trash-talking American to pull out through injury last month, leading to unbeaten Australian Huni stepping in at late notice.

Kylian Mbappe bites back over PSG's Champions League win and Luis Enrique dig

Kylian Mbappe left Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid last summer in the hope of winning the Champions League, but it was the French side who actually lifted the European Cup this year Kylian Mbappe has insisted he does not feel bitter over Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League win. The French side finally won Europe's most desired crown last week by smashing Inter Milan in the final in Munich. It is the first time PSG have won the European Cup in their history and fulfills a long-held ambition for the club. They have been desperate to win the Champions League ever since being taken over by the Qatar state back in 2011. ‌ That desperation saw them assemble a Galactico-filled side containing Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Neymar and Mbappe himself. But they failed to follow through on their promise, wwith all four leaving by last summer. ‌ Mbappe was the final one to remain at the Parc des Princes, before joining Real Madrid on a free transfer, citing the desire to win the game's biggest prizes. After leading PSG to the crown, boss Luis Enrique made a sly dig at Mbappe, insisting he could have been part of the historic team. Enrique said: 'We would have loved to have him, but his decision was different. We've shown that we have stars at the service of the team, and not the other way around.' Mbappe though has now fired back at Enrique, insisting he made the right decision to move on. He also revealed that he did indeed watch the final and hailed his former team-mates for their efforts. "Did I leave too soon? No," he said on Saturday. "My story was over, it had to end. No bitterness, I had reached the end of the road. I would have tried anything. It was just fate that meant it had to happen without me. "I was in Morocco, I watched the match at the Fairmont in Marrakech. Do you want all the details? I was happy, they deserve it, they've been through so much trouble, I've been through that too. ‌ "I've been through every stage of the Champions League except the victory. They were the best team in Europe. I don't remember seeing a 5-0. It's 100% deserved, they're becoming the team everyone wants to beat." Mbappe recovered from a difficult start at Madrid to score 43 goals in 56 games, though they failed to win a major trophy. But the Frenchman hit back at suggestions that the season was a failure, pointing to Madrid winning the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. "A blank season? Are you sure? What's a blank season? What's a blank season? Do you watch the matches? We won two titles. That's the importance of words. We missed out on important titles," Mbappe added. ‌ "This year has been enriching. PSG winning the Champions League without me, it doesn't affect me. It's a good thing. I think that in a career we all have challenges. I'm a little more in the eye of the storm, it's good. "I've always liked being in these positions, it's up to me to work. I've reversed a lot of trends in my career, a lot of things were pinned on me, and I managed to get them off my chest. It's up to me to work."
