MP: Six-year-old boy dies of Japanese encephalitis

Dindori (MP), Aug 12 (PTI) A six-year-old boy from the tribal-dominated Dindori district in Madhya Pradesh has died of Japanese encephalitis, a health official said on Tuesday.
'The ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) report has found that the child died due to Japanese encephalitis on August 6," said Jayashree Maravi, malaria officer in charge of Dindori district.
The deceased Ajay Gautam, who was a resident of Bahera village in Amarpur block of Dindori district, died at Jabalpur Medical College.
Maravi said a team from the malaria department and Amarpur's Block Medical Officer (BMO), S S Markam, found unhealthy conditions in the village and decided to spray medicine.
Ajay's family members said he fell while playing with his sister last month. Subsequently, he developed swelling on his leg and a high fever.
He was initially treated at a hospital in Dindori; however, as his condition didn't improve, he was taken to the district official before being referred to the Jabalpur Medical College.
Ajay's father, Santosh, told PTI that his daughter Madhu has been undergoing treatment at the district hospital for fever.
Japanese encephalitis is a serious viral zoonotic disease which leads to fatigue, headache, fever, and vomiting.
According to doctors, if this disease is not treated in time, it can lead to swelling in the brain, coma, and even paralysis. PTI COR MAS NSK

Earlier in the day, a 32-year-old man died after falling while tying a 'Dahi Handi' in Mankhurd, in the northeastern part of the city. The man was identified as Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari. Officials said Jagmohan was tying the handi — an earthen pot filled with curd, which groups of 'govindas' try to break by forming a human pyramid — to a rope from the first-floor window grille of his house in Maharashtra Nagar. He fell and was taken to the civic-run Shatabdi Govandi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Of the injured, 76 were treated and discharged, while 19 remained hospitalised. The casualties were spread across the city, with 30 in the island city area, 31 in the eastern suburbs, and 34 in the western suburbs. Dahi Handi is celebrated across Maharashtra to mark the birth of Lord Krishna. During the festival, teams of young men and women form human pyramids to reach and break the curd-filled handi suspended in the air by ropes. The event is known for its colourful and lively atmosphere but can also be dangerous due to the risky pyramid formations. Mumbai, Aug 16 (PTI) The death toll in 'Dahi Handi' festivities in Mumbai on Saturday touched two after a 14-year-old 'govinda' was declared dead on arrival by doctors in a hospital in Ghatkopar, a civic official said. Rohan Mohan Malvi, part of the Gaondevi Govinda Pathak, fell unconscious while sitting in a tempo in Adarsh Nagar area of Andheri East, the official said, adding he did not take part in the pyramid formation since he had recently suffered a bout of jaundice. 'He was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar where doctors declared him dead on arrival," he said. Earlier, in the afternoon, a 32-year-old man fell to death while tying 'Dahi Handi' in Mankhurd in the north eastern part of the metropolis, officials said. The deceased was identified as Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari. 'He was tying the handi (an earthen pot filled with curd which groups of 'govindas' try to reach and break by forming a human pyramid) to a rope from the first-floor window grille of his house in Maharashtra Nagar when he fell. As on 9pm, the number of persons injured during the festivities stood at 95, the condition of two being serious, the official said.
