Move aside, men! Female pilots perform better under pressure than males, study finds

If you're planning on jetting off for your holidays this summer, you might hope to find a woman behind the controls.
Although 90 per cent of pilots are men, a new study has found that female pilots perform better under pressure than their male counterparts.
The researchers say that women have 'unique strengths' that male pilots lack, which give them steadier hands and cooler heads in the cockpit.
During testing, both genders performed similarly in some areas, but women made fewer errors under pressure.
Women demonstrated more stable landing approaches, completed tasks faster in emergency scenarios, and showed greater situational awareness.
Researchers from the University of Waterloo, Canada, tested how pilots of different genders responded to visual information while flying.
Lead author Dr Naila Ayala says: 'These findings are exciting because they push us to rethink how we evaluate pilots.
'Our study shows that women may be better at keeping control and making decisions in stressful flight scenarios.'
Previous studies have looked at how the different genders process visual information and perform tasks under pressure.
However, little is known about how this actually affects performance in real-life scenarios such as piloting and aircraft.
To study these gender differences, 20 pilots with less than 300 hours of flight time, 10 male and 10 female, completed flights in a cutting-edge flight simulator.
The participants faced a mixture of typical flights and emergency situations, such as engine failures, that require quick thinking and fast reflexes.
At the same time, each participant wore eye-tracking glasses to record where they were looking and how they responded to what they saw.
The researchers found that both male and female pilots had nearly identical 'visual attention patterns', but female pilots still tended to make fewer mistakes.
This means that, even though men and women paid attention to the same information during the flight, women responded to that information more consistently and with greater accuracy.
Dr Naila says: 'We can't assume that because two pilots are looking at the same things, they will react the same way.'
In their study, Dr Naila and her co-authors conclude that these findings 'suggest that female pilots may manage task demands effectively under pressure.'
That could have big implications in a profession which is still massively dominated by men at all levels.
Recent studies have shown that just 6.5 per cent of pilots working for UK companies are women.
That number is even lower for higher-ranking captains in commercial airlines, with a pay gap of 50 per cent or more between male and female staff at some firms.
The researchers hope that these findings can change the way pilots are assessed and encourage companies to recruit more women.
Co-author Suzanne Kearns says: 'Understanding how different people perform under pressure helps us build better training programs for everyone, safer cockpits, and more inclusive aviation systems.
'At a time when the industry is facing a pilot shortage, tapping into the full potential of all pilots, regardless of gender, is more important than ever.'

Scientists have identified a compound found in cruciferous vegetables that can wipe out over 90 per cent of the sticky film behind dental plaque, an advance that may lead to new kinds of toothpaste and mouthwash. Dental caries is a global problem with over 60 per cent of school-aged children in low and middle-income countries estimated to have the health issue. It arises as the community of microbes coating the tooth surface shifts to include more bacteria with characteristics of high acid production due to increased carbohydrate intake. Among such bacteria, S mutans is the most prominent due to its durability in a high sugar and low pH environment. Currently, toothpaste, mouthwash, and routine dental visits help, but researchers are on the lookout for better solutions from naturally derived compounds. Researchers, including those from the National University of Singapore, have found that a compound called 3,3′-Diindolylmethane (DIM) – also known as bisindole – can cut down the biofilms behind plaque and cavities by 90 per cent. DIM is a compound that is also naturally formed in the body when digesting cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and kale. The new study showed that DIM specifically targets the bacterium S. mutans, a key contributor to tooth decay, which thrives and forms sticky films in the warm, sugary conditions inside the mouth. Scientists found that at even a very low concentration, DIM inhibited biofilm formation by 92 per cent, reduced bacterial production of the glue that sticks them to surfaces, and also decreased the biofilm's durability. Earlier studies have shown that DIM has anti-cancer properties with low toxicity toward normal cells, making it a potentially safe candidate for application in the mouth. Previous research has shown that S mutans biofilms lead to plaque buildup, enamel erosion and dental cavities. The latest study found that DIM, which is known to also have anti-cancer effects, drastically disrupts the biofilm by preventing the bacteria from multiplying. While the results are far from establishing DIM as a practical dental treatment, scientists say the findings are encouraging. 'The molecule, which was found to have low toxicity, could be added to toothpastes and mouthwashes to greatly improve dental hygiene,' said Ariel Kushmaro, one of the authors of the study. 'The anti-biofilm and anti-virulence properties of DIM against S. mutans bacteria in an 'oral setting' provide evidence for its usefulness in reducing biofilm formation and potentially for caries attenuation,' scientists wrote.

It is predicted to be one of the most devastating earthquakes in history. And now scientists have issued a chilling warning about 'The Big One' – a mega–earthquake set to rock California 's notorious San Andreas fault. Experts from Caltech in Pasadena have studied a 7.7–magnitude earthquake that shook Myanmar in March along the Sagaing fault – a fault known for being eerily similar to San Andreas. That earthquake ended up rupturing a much longer section of the fault than scientists expected, killing thousands and causing widespread damage. According to the researchers, this suggests The Big One could also be even bigger than we originally thought. 'Future earthquakes might not simply repeat past known earthquakes,' said Jean–Philippe Avouac, co–author of the study. 'Successive ruptures of a given fault, even as simple as the Sagaing or the San Andreas faults, can be very different and can release even more than the deficit of slip since the last event. 'In addition, historical records are generally far too short for statistical models to represent the full range of possible earthquakes and eventual patterns in earthquake recurrence.' The devastating earthquake hit Myanmar on 28 March 2025, killing more than 2,000 people, and leaving 3,900 injured. The quake occurred when a section of the Sagaing fault ruptured, causing widespread damage along a swathe of territory down the middle of the country, including Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway and Bago regions and Shan State. In their new study, the Caltech team used satellite imagery of the Sagaing Fault's motion to understand exactly what happened – and whether a similar incident could happen in California. 'This earthquake turned out to be an ideal case to apply image correlation methods that were developed by our research group,' said Solène Antoine, first author of the study. 'They allow us to measure ground displacements at the fault, where the alternative method, radar interferometry, is blind due to phenomenon like decorrelation [a process to decouple signals] and limited sensitivity to north–south displacements.' Based on studies of previous tremors along the Sagaing fault, the researchers expected that the earthquake would occur on a 186–mile (300–kilometer) section of the fault, where no large earthquakes had occurred since 1839. The satellite images confirmed that this was the case – but that the fault actually slipped along a total of more than 310 miles (500km). In fact, the 310–mile section shifted by a whopping 9.8ft (three metres) after the quake. So, what does this mean for The Big One? Well, according to the researchers, it suggests The Big One won't look like anything we've seen before. Previous earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault include a 7.9–magnitude earthquake in 1857, which ruptured the fault from Monterey County all the way to Los Angeles County. Meanwhile, in 1906, an earthquake began just offshore of San Francisco, before rupturing in two directions, towards Humboldt County and Santa Cruz County. Instead, a future rupture could result in smaller, separate earthquakes. Or, it could be even bigger than those seen before – rupturing the fault all the way into San Bernardino, Riverside, and Imperial counties, and reaching a magnitude of 8. The researchers now hope to use their new models to better understand what The Big One will actually look like. 'Physics–based models provide an alternative approach with the advantage that they could, in principle, be tuned to observations and used for time–dependent forecast,' Professor Avouac added.

A man in Washington accidentally poisoned himself after following a diet made by ChatGPT. The unnamed man, 60, rushed to his local emergency room with suspicions that his neighbor was poisoning him. About a day after being admitted to the hospital, he also suffered paranoia and hallucinations and attempted to escape from the hospital. The man later revealed he had several dietary restrictions, including distilling his own water and following an 'extremely restrictive' vegetarian diet. He told doctors after reading about the harms of sodium chloride, or table salt, he asked ChatGPT about eliminating it from his diet. The chatbot reportedly advised him it was safe to replace salt with sodium bromide, which was used as a sedative in the early 20th century and is now found in anticonvulsants for dogs and humans. He ended up following this recommendation for three months and eventually developed bromism, or bromide poisoning. Bromide can accumulate in the body and impair nerve function, a condition called bromism. This leads to confusion, memory loss, anxiety, delusions, rashes and acne, which the man also had. Doctors treating the man, from the University of Washington in Seattle, replicated his search and got the same incorrect advice. They warned that the case highlighted 'how the use of artificial intelligence can potentially contribute to the development of preventable adverse health outcomes.' They said ChatGPT and other chatbots could 'generate scientific inaccuracies, lack the ability to critically discuss results, and ultimately fuel the spread of misinformation.' The anonymous case study, published earlier this month in the Annals of Internal Medicine, comes one week after OpenAI claimed one of the chatbot's newest upgrades could be better at answering health-related questions and 'flagging potential concerns.' However, ChatGPT's guidelines state it is not 'intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition.' The patient appeared to have an earlier version of the software. After attempting to escape from the hospital, the man was put on an involuntary psychiatric hold and given large amounts of fluids and electrolytes to help flush the bromide out of his system. His bromide level was at 1,700 mg/L, while the normal range is between 0.9 and 7.3 mg/L. Bromide was used as a sedative in the 19th and 20th centuries and was once widespread in prescription and over-the-counter drugs. However, as research uncovered the risk of chronic exposure, regulators gradually began removing them from the US drug supply. As a result, cases today remain few and far between. The man reported acne and small red growths on his skin, insomnia, fatigue, muscle coordination issues and excessive thirst. It took three weeks for his bromide levels to stabilize and for him to be weaned off psychiatric medications before he was able to be discharged. The doctors treating him wrote: 'While it is a tool with much potential to provide a bridge between scientists and the nonacademic population, AI also carries the risk for promulgating decontextualized information. 'It is highly unlikely that a medical expert would have mentioned sodium bromide when faced with a patient looking for a viable substitute for sodium chloride.' They also emphasized that 'as the use of AI tools increases, providers will need to consider this when screening for where their patients are consuming health information.'
