PM Anwar: Govt considering dedicated commission for TVET sector

Malay Maila day ago

MELAKA, June 12 — The government is mulling over the proposal to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission in line with the TVET reform agenda that is being actively implemented.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the development of TVET under the National TVET Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has shown encouraging results, including an increase in the number of students.
'I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs.
'With the number of students and types of training increasing, I, together with the Ministry of Finance, will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players, and existing TVET institutions.'
Anwar said this when opening the National TVET Day 2025 celebration at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, here today. — Bernama

Police cooperative announces RM36.14mil dividend payout

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Police Cooperative Bhd (KPDRM) has announced an annual dividend payout of 5.8 per cent on subscription capital and 9.2 per cent on share capital to its members for financial year 2024, totalling RM36.14 million. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said this was the first time such a substantial dividend had been distributed to KPDRM members in the cooperative's 97-year history. "This dividend represents an increase of 0.3 per cent for subscription capital and 2.2 per cent for share capital compared to 2023," he said during the KPDRM Annual General Meeting at a hotel here today. The event was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail also in attendance. He said KPDRM recorded a profit of RM50.14 million for 2024, compared with RM45.02 million in 2023.

Anwar hopes Rafizi and Nik Nazmi will rethink decision to quit Cabinet

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants to give Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad more time to reconsider their decision to quit the Cabinet. "Let them think it over... If possible, I (want) them to rejoin (the Cabinet). "The (resignation) letters have been received, but I have not accepted their resignations," he told Sinar Harian after a closed-door seminar and engagement session with PKR members in Melaka on Thursday (June 12). Rafizi quit as economy minister while Nik Nazmi resigned from the natural resources and environmental sustainability portfolio following their defeats in the PKR central leadership elections last month. At Thursday's event, Anwar urged party members to strengthen their ties with one another, putting aside any dissatisfaction with the election results. He said members should be open-minded and put aside differences of opinion that came up during the election for the sake of the party's agenda. 'Did you imagine that I could work with Umno? (Party members) have to move on for the greater agenda. "If I can work with (a former rival), then I can also work with friends who have different opinions," he said. In another development, Anwar said the government will cover the expenses of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for attending the 30th Nikkei International Forum in Japan in May. He said the government allocated RM486,000 after receiving an application from Dr Mahathir to attend the conference in Tokyo. "There are regulations that allow the Prime Minister to approve (the travel of other former prime ministers)... he requested it (and) if the Prime Minister approves, the government will pay," he added. Anwar said that, despite often being critical of the unity government, the former prime minister had the right to apply for allocations, subject to approval. "I don't want anyone to misunderstand... I also don't want to be negative about it, even though he 'attacks' us every day. We still approved it," Anwar added. On May 30, Dr Mahathir delivered a speech at the forum, which discussed the economy, technology and future of Asia.
