ENG vs IND: Jadeja, Sundar heroics help India force gritty draw in 4th Test
Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar's gritty yet eventful 203-run partnership did the trick in the end for the visitors as England couldn't pick 8 wickets on the final day of the encounter to seal the series.
Brilliant effort put in again by both the sides who fought till the last hour and saw players picking up niggles along the way because of the demands of the Test match that tested the players both physically and mentally in the course of the 5 days.
England opting to bowl first
The match started with English skipper Ben Stokes winning the fourth toss in a row in the series and opting to bowl first. However, to their surprise, India started the match in promising manner, adding 94 runs for the first wicket before KL Rahul (46) lost his wicket to Chris Woakes. Yashasvi Jaiswal (58), Sai Sudharsan (61) and Rishabh Pant (54) all hit brilliant half-centuries, followed by gusty cameos from Shardul Thakur (41) and Washington Sundar (27), which helped India post 358 runs on the board before being bundled out. Ben Stokes was England's best bowler with a spell of 5 for 72 to his name.
England's dominance with the bat
In reply, England showcased pure dominance as their top three, Zak Crawley (84), Ben Duckett (94) and Ollie Pope (71), despite missing out on Test tons, put England in a commanding position before Joe Root (150) and Ben Stokes (141) ripped apart the Indian bowling line-up, as England finished their innings at 669 before losing all 10 wickets. The hosts took a huge lead of 311 in the first innings, putting India in danger of an innings defeat.
Gill-Rahul paving the way for a draw
India's start in the second innings was exactly the opposite of the first, as they lost Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan, both on a duck, in the first over itself. But just when the game looked all but done for India, KL Rahul, along with skipper Shubman Gill, led one of the best fightbacks in Test cricket, adding 188 runs for the third wicket before Rahul was dismissed by Ben Stokes on 90.
Skipper Gill went on to score his fourth Test hundred of the series but was then dismissed by Jofra Archer on 103, as India found themselves in a tough spot after a brilliant fightback. However, the two Indian all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar then took charge and stitched a century stand for the fifth wicket, to not only take India past the 311-run mark to avoid an innings defeat but also push the match further towards a draw.
Jadeja-Sundar's 203-run stand does the job for the visitors
The final session then saw both batters take the run scoring up a notch and get the score past 350 on the day as well. With almost an hour of play left in Manchester, it is at that point that both captains shook hands and decided to call this riveting tie a draw. The control percentage between the two batters was up to 92% in the final session despite of experiencing more turn in the middle. This just shows the level of grit and determination between the two batters to take their team through to the finish line. Both batters were given the chance to complete their hundreds with Sundar scoring his maiden Test ton as well as both Stokes and Jadeja were then seeing shaking hands to call it a day in what was a riveting test match in Manchester. Shubman Gill and co. go to Kensington Oval with the thought of levelling the 5-match series in the final Test now.

Akash Deep's send-off for Ben Duckett raises eyebrows: ‘Not sure if this is the right way…'
Akash Deep ended a rampaging opening partnership between Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley by dismissing the latter but it is what he did after that which became a talking point on Day 2 of the fifth Test between India and England. Deep punched the air after getting Duckett caught behind before putting his arm around the batter's shoulder and walking a few steps with him. They also seemed to briefly exchange a few words in those seconds before KL Rahul pulled Deep away. Umpire Ahsan Raza also had a word with Deep after that. It was the last ball of the over and Shardul Thakur could be seen having a chat with Deep while he was fielding at the boundary the next over. On-air commentators Mike Atherton and Dinesh Karthik both seemed to not really approve Deep's behaviour. 'Given Duckett a bit of a send off which is probably unneccessary but it is the wicket that India desperately wanted,' said Atherton. Dinesh Karthik lauded Duckett to remain calm and not make too many big gestures. 'Not sure if this is the right way to send off a batter especially after you've got him out. Not many batsmen would behave the way Ben Duckett,' he said. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting later said during his stint that he likes Duckett even more now for the way he handled the situation. 'I love the way Ben Duckett plays his cricket, I think I like him even more now!' said Ponting Karthik later opined that it was almost like the pair knew each other really well and were having a friendly chat. England batting coach Marcus Trescothick applauded Duckett on his way into the dressing room. Trescothick later seemed to be jokingly indicating that Duckett should've elbowed Akash Deep. The incident was only one of quite a few heated moments between the Indian and English players during the latter side's innings, something that has been throughout the five-Test series that the hosts lead 2-1. After the Duckett incident, Joe Root and Prasidh Krishna got into a lengthy battle. The pair could be seen saying visibly unfriendly things to each other as Root crossed Krishna while taking a run. There was also a long steely stare shared between the two in Krishna's next over after the pacer. The umpires ended up having a word with Krishna as well. Gill had said before the match that the relations between India and English players, many of whom have played in the IPL t0gether on multiple occassions, haven't been affected by the spice of the series. 'The relation is fantastic, but when you are on the field, you are trying to win a game at the end of the day, and both the teams have been very competitive and sometimes when you are competitive in the heat of the moment, you do or say things that you might not do [otherwise],' he said. 'But once the match is over, there is mutual respect between both teams.'

At a time when tempers flared between the players of both India and England in the ongoing Test series, Akash Deep chose the friendly way after dismissing Ben Duckett on the second day of the fifth and final game at The Oval on Friday. After dismissing India for 224 in the first innings, England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett went hammer and tongs against the opposition, racing to 100-plus before lunch. One of the highlights of the English innings was the battle between Akash Deep and Duckett as the England opener went brutal against the Indian pacer, including a reverse sweep six on the last ball of the fourth over. However, the Bengal seamer had the last laugh when Duckett tried the same in the 13th over. What caught the attention was Akash Deep's controlled aggression against Duckett. While India the pacer celebrated with a fist pump, Akash Deep put his arm around Duckett as the England opener made his way towards the pavilion. The duo also exchanged a conversation which looked more friendly as if they had known each other for years. However, Akash Deep's friendly gesture didn't go well with the former cricketers Dinesh Karthik and Michael Atherton. Speaking at the commentary box, Atherton felt Akash Deep's gesture was 'probably unnecessary'. 'He's given Duckett a bit of a send-off, which is probably unnecessary, but it's the wicket that India desperately wanted. "How many times did a bowler put his arm around after dismissing you, DK?,' asked Atherton, who represented England 169 times in international cricket. Karthik, on the other hand, was unsure if Akash Deep was correct in his act. 'I'm not sure if this is the right way to send off a batter, especially after you've got him out. Not many batsmen would behave the way Ben Duckett did, or rather did. It looked like they knew each other really well," added the former India wicketkeeper.

5th Test: Jasprit Bumrah released from India squad ahead of day two's play
London: Fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India's squad, after not being included in playing XI for the ongoing fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test against England at The Oval, due to workload management, said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Bumrah wasn't spotted in the Indian team bus ahead of arriving at the venue for day two's play. 'Mr Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India's squad for the fifth Test of the series against England. The fifth and final Test of the series is underway at Kennington Oval, London,' said the BCCI in a statement on Friday. Before the five-match series began in England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir said Bumrah wouldn't feature in more than three Tests on tour due to workload management. Bumrah featured in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, followed by the third and fourth games at Lord's and Old Trafford, Manchester, respectively. In three games, Bumrah picked 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, coming off bowling 119.4 overs at an average of 26 to be the leading wicket-taker for India in the ongoing series. Bumrah could have been expected to play in the fifth Test at The Oval, but he wasn't included in the playing eleven. 'We obviously want to wheel him out, but we also want to respect where his body is at, and on the basis of that, we just felt that it wasn't worth including him in the squad. He has bowled a large number of overs, I know it doesn't always seem like that because he's only played three tests and he's only bowled in one innings in Manchester.' 'But if you look at the loads, he's bowled a lot of overs, and like he did say coming into the tour, he was going to be available for three games, and we just felt it was right on that call,' said India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate at the end of day one's play.
