
China's factory activity cools in May as US tariffs hit

BEIJING, - China's factory activity in May shrank for the first time in eight months, a private-sector survey showed on Tuesday, indicating U.S. tariffs are now starting to directly hurt the manufacturing superpower.
The Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing PMI fell to 48.3 in May from 50.4 in April, missing analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll and marking the first contraction since September last year. It was also the lowest reading in 32 months.
The 50-mark separates growth from contraction.
The result is broadly in line with China's official PMI released on Saturday that showed factory activity fell for a second month.
A federal appeals court temporarily reinstated the most sweeping U.S. tariffs, a day after a trade court ruled that President Donald Trump had exceeded his authority in imposing the duties and ordered an immediate block on them.
Two weeks after breakthrough negotiations that resulted in a temporary truce in the trade war between the world's two biggest economies, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday the talks are "a bit stalled".
China's Premier Li Qiang last week said the country is mulling new policy tools, including some "unconventional measures", which will be launched as the situation evolves.
According to the Caixin survey, new export orders shrank for the second straight month in May and at the fastest pace since July 2023. Producers said the U.S. tariffs restrained global demand.
That dragged down overall new orders to the lowest since September 2022.
Factory output meanwhile contracted for the first time since October 2023.
Employment in the manufacturing sector declined at the sharpest pace since the start of this year, as producers cut headcount.
Output prices have fallen for six straight months due to intense market competition.
In the auto industry, for example, an intensifying price war in China has stoked fears of a long-anticipated shake-out in the world's largest car market.
Robin Xing, Chief China Economist at Morgan Stanley, said this underscores how supply-demand imbalances continue to fuel deflation.
"There is growing rhetoric about the need for rebalancing, but recent developments suggest the old supply-driven model remains intact. Thus, reflation is likely to remain elusive."
Surprisingly, export charges rose for the first time in nine months, marking the fastest growth since July 2024, as companies cited rising logistics costs and tariffs.
Overall, business optimism improved in terms of future output, as they expect the trade environment to improve with market expansion.

Donald Trump CHENNAI: Commercial banks have beefed up measures to contain the impact of 50% tariff on India's exports to the US effective from Aug 27. They are looking at multiple options including temporary interest concessions, flexible repayment structures and working capital lines to help manage cash flow pressures arising from delayed shipments. The move comes in the wake of discussions between financial institutions and exporters over the adverse impact of the proposed tariffs. Vitauthority Learn More Undo Another public sector bank, Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), is advising exporters and manufacturers on alternative markets, product diversification, foreign exchange exposures and its hedging to mitigate currency volatility. Exporters are concerned about probable reduction in fresh orders, increased competition in new markets, narrow profit margins, order cancellation or price renegotiation. "We have increased sector-specific monitoring for early identification of stress and prompt resolution. Our bank is also keeping a close watch on the Govt of India initiative and align our interventions accordingly," IOB MD & CEO Ajay Kumar Srivastava told TOI. A sizable number of exporters and manufacturers, who have availed credit from banks, have exposure to sectors such as textiles, auto components, gems and jewellery, leather products (footwear & accessories), chemicals, and food processing in the US market. Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) MD & CEO Salee S Nair said, its relationship managers are conducting detailed discussions with each customer to assess their exposure, review ongoing contracts, and understand the possible implications for order volumes, shipment timelines, and working capital needs. "We are extending flexible repayment structures and, where necessary, enhancing working capital lines to help manage cash flow pressures arising from delayed shipments or margin compression. As of date, TMB's total export credit post-shipment outstanding stands at Rs 102.8 crore, of which Rs 20.7 crore is linked to the US market," he added. Foxconn's Bengaluru unit commences operation with iPhone 17 production
By Prasoon Srivastava New Delhi: Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn 's Bengaluru factory, its second-largest manufacturing unit, has commenced operation with production of iPhone 17 recently at a small scale, sources aware of the development said. Foxconn is the largest manufacturer of iPhones, and the second-biggest facility outside China in Devanahalli near Bengaluru, being set up at an investment of $2.8 billion (about ₹25,000 crore). " Foxconn Bengaluru unit has commenced operation with the production of iPhone 17. This is in addition to the production of iPhone 17 at its Chennai unit," a source aware of the development said. An email query sent to Apple and Foxconn elicited no reply on the development. The production had faced a brief interruption after hundreds of Chinese engineers went back abruptly. However, Foxconn has been able to get experts from various destinations, including Taiwan, to address the gap. According to multiple sources, Apple plans to increase iPhone production to 60 million units this year from about 35-40 million units in 2024-25. Apple assembled 60 per cent more iPhones, worth an estimated $22 billion, in India in the year ended March 31, 2025. The company's CEO Tim Cook, after the financial result announcement on July 31, said the majority of the iPhones sold in the US in June 2025 originated from India. Cook, during the second-quarter earnings call, had announced that all iPhones sold in the US in the June quarter will be shipped from India. According to an analysis by S&P Global, iPhone sales in the US were 75.9 million units in 2024, with March exports from India at 3.1 million units, suggesting a need to double shipments either through new capacity or redirecting shipments bound for the domestic market. Apple's supplies within India grew by 21.5 per cent annually to 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025, with iPhone 16 being the highest-shipped model across the country during the period. During the second quarter, Apple's iPhone supplies in India grew 19.7 per cent year-on-year in the June 2025 quarter, clocking 7.5 per cent market share in the country's smartphone market. The overall smartphone market in India during the June quarter was led by Chinese smartphone maker Vivo, which captured 19 per cent share, as per IDC.
