European companies urge EU to delay AI rules

The Sun6 hours ago
BRUSSELS: Dozens of Europe's biggest companies urged the EU to hit the pause button on its landmark AI rules on Thursday, warning that going too fast could harm the bloc's ability to lead in the global AI race.
The European Union's sweeping rules on artificial intelligence entered into force last year but the bloc has since pivoted to strengthening its industries in the face of fierce competition from China and the United States.
The new US administration under President Donald Trump has also taken aim at the rules. Vice President JD Vance in February lambasted the EU over 'excessive' regulation.
Now, 46 top executives including from France's Airbus and Mistral, Dutch tech giant ASML and Germany's Lufthansa and Mercedes-Benz are calling on Brussels to reassess the rules.
They accused the EU's complex regulation of putting 'Europe's AI ambitions at risk, as it jeopardises not only the development of European champions, but also the ability of all industries to deploy AI at the scale required by global competition'.
The CEOs urged the European Commission to propose a two-year pause and for 'further simplification of the new rules' for which a code of practice has yet to be released.
The pause, the CEOs said, should apply to obligations on general-purpose AI models -- like OpenAI's ChatGPT -- and high-risk AI systems that were due to take effect in August 2025 and August 2026 respectively.
The EU's law takes a risk-based approach to the technology.
The higher the risk to Europeans' rights or health, for example, the greater the systems' obligations to protect individuals from harm.
The EU has been working on the long-delayed code to provide guidance on how the rules should apply to general-purpose AI models, including Google's Gemini and Mistral's Le Chat.
There are expectations that the code will be watered down and the commission has said it will be published before the rules on GPAI models kick in next month.
AFP has a deal with Mistral allowing its chatbot to draw on the agency's articles to formulate responses. – AFP

European savings and retirement services group Athora to acquire Pension Insurance Corporation Group

Ownership of Pension Insurance Corporation Group ('PICG'), ultimate parent company of the specialist insurer of UK defined benefit pension schemes Pension Insurance Corporation ('PIC'), to transition to a single and strategic owner PICG will become the UK insurance business of Athora and continue to operate under the PIC (and penguin) brand, benefitting from increased access to long-term growth capital and enhanced asset origination expertise as part of Athora Acquisition to create a pan-European savings and retirement services champion, establishing a leading position in the UK Pensions market to complement Athora's existing operations in the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Germany LONDON, July 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Athora Holding Ltd. (Athora or the Group) and Pension Insurance Corporation Group Limited (PICG), one of the UK's leading pension solutions providers, today announced that Athora and the shareholders of PICG – Reinet Fund S.C.A., F.I.S.; a wholly owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA); funds managed by CVC Capital Partners (CVC) and HPS Investment Partners (collectively, the Consortium) – have entered into a definitive agreement for Athora to acquire PICG for approximately £5.7 billion. Upon completion, PICG will become Athora's UK insurance business, operating under the Pension Insurance Corporation (PIC) and Penguin brands. Athora is a leading European savings and retirement services business with €76 billion of Assets under Management and Administration (AuMA), serving approximately 2.8 million policyholders. Athora is backed by permanent capital owners, including a strategic minority investment by Apollo Global Management and Athene Holding Ltd, and long term institutional investors such as a wholly owned subsidiary of ADIA. As a result of the transaction, PICG will become Athora's UK subsidiary, maintaining its long tenured team, dedication to customer service, robust capitalisation and disciplined investment philosophy. In addition, PIC is poised to benefit from broader resources, long-term growth capital, and enhanced asset origination capabilities, including in private investment grade credit resulting from Athora's strategic relationship with Apollo. Together, Athora and PIC believe the combination will accelerate scaled, high-grade financing in the UK market, increasing productive investment in the economy and supporting retirement outcomes for pensioners. The acquisition of PICG by the Athora Group will create one of Europe's largest insured savings and retirement services businesses, building on existing subsidiaries in the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and Germany. Commenting on the acquisition, Mike Wells, Athora's Group Chief Executive Officer, said: 'We are pleased for PICG to become Athora's first UK insurance business, maintaining its great team, brand and utmost commitment to serving its customers. The acquisition by Athora will enhance access to long-term growth capital and asset origination capabilities, enabling PIC to serve more of the UK savings and retirement market, where it has already established itself as a top three provider in pension risk transfer.' Wells continued, 'Today, PIC is a significant investor in the UK economy and, as part of Athora, we believe it will play an even more meaningful role in providing long-duration financing for infrastructure and other long-term assets.' Tracy Blackwell, CEO of PIC, said: 'PIC has had an amazing growth story over the past two decades and is now one of Britain's preeminent pension businesses. This success has been based on a simple purpose, which is to pay the pensions of our current and future policyholders. Athora's investment is validation of what we have always believed: that PIC's reputation, strategy, fortress balance sheet, purpose, and most importantly our people combine to make this a unique business in a huge and growing market. 'With Athora backing us through our next phase of growth as their UK insurance business, we will be able to provide more options to the trustees of defined benefit pension schemes and invest more in the UK economy and infrastructure. The pension risk transfer market is vital to the wellbeing of millions of UK pensioners and the allocation of tens of billions of pounds of investment into the UK's economy. This acquisition and the potential for growth that it represents is, in our view, the strongest possible recognition of the value and importance of the pension risk transfer market, the sector that PIC helped to create and continues to lead.' After adjusting for the acquisition, Athora will have approximately €135[1] billion of AuMA, representing a 78% increase on the year-end 2024 level. The acquisition will be funded primarily by equity as well as long-term bank debt. Pro forma for the transaction, Athora expects to maintain solvency ratio above its target levels. The proposed transaction is expected to close in early 2026. Completion of the transaction is contingent upon satisfaction of customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals from the PRA. About PIC: The purpose of PIC is to pay the pensions of its current and future policyholders. PIC provides secure retirement incomes through comprehensive risk management and excellence in asset and liability management, as well as exceptional customer service. At year end 2024, PIC had insured 400,000 pension scheme members and had a portfolio of £50.9 billion, accumulated through the provision of tailored pension insurance buyouts and buy-ins to the trustees and sponsors of UK defined benefit pension schemes. Motor racing-Russell says likelihood of leaving Mercedes "exceptionally low"

Formula One F1 - British Grand Prix - Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone, Britain - July 3, 2025 Mercedes' George Russell during the press conference ahead of the British Grand Prix REUTERS/Andrew Boyers SILVERSTONE, England (Reuters) -George Russell said he was almost certain to stay with Mercedes next season amid increasing speculation that his old Formula One foe Max Verstappen could move to the team from Red Bull. The Briton is out of contract at the end of this year while four-times world champion Verstappen is known to have performance clauses that could release him from a contract that runs to 2028. "The likelihood I'm not at Mercedes next year, I think is exceptionally low," Russell told reporters ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone when quizzed again about his situation. Verstappen is third in the standings but a huge 61 points behind McLaren's leader Oscar Piastri. Once-dominant Red Bull are fourth in the constructors' championship. "I wouldn't be surprised if he (Verstappen) comes. And if he comes I'd welcome him as a team mate. But I don't think he will," said Russell, who has had a number of clashes with the Dutch driver this season and last. "I personally think things will continue as they are. But again until the contract is on the table on my side, and also for Kimi (Antonelli), you can never be sure." Russell, who won in Canada last month, said he was not losing any sleep about his performance and was also pretty thick-skinned when it came to rumours. "I'm not scared of Max. He's obviously an amazing driver in the same way (previous teammate) Lewis (Hamilton) was an amazing driver." Russell has been managed by Mercedes since he was 16 and pointed out that there was therefore not much negotiation to be done on his contract. Mercedes had admitted to talks with Verstappen but more for the long term. "I want to continue with Mercedes into the future. The fact is (team boss) Toto (Wolff) has never let me down. He's always given me his word but he's also got to do what's right for his team, which includes me," said Russell. "For me, it's nothing to worry about because I don't think I'll be going anywhere." The rumour mill has suggested that 18-year-old Italian rookie Antonelli could be loaned to Renault-owned Alpine, who will have Mercedes engines next year and are run by Italian Flavio Briatore. Others have predicted a pairing of Verstappen and Antonelli as more likely. There has also been speculation that Verstappen might take a sabbatical for a year to see how the new 2026 engines affected the pecking order, but the Dutch driver dismissed that categorically. "No, no for sure not," he said, while not commenting on his contract or the speculation. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin, editing by Clare Fallon)

Putin says he will speak with Trump on the phone today

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have praised each other in recent weeks. (AP pic) MOSCOW : Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he would speak with US counterpart Donald Trump on the phone today, their first publicly announced call in over two weeks. The two have been in regular contact since Trump took office in January and have discussed issues like the Ukraine conflict and economic cooperation. Putin did not say what the two would discuss in today's call. 'I will talk to the US president today,' the Russian leader told media during a visit to an exhibition centre in Moscow. Trump confirmed the call on Truth Social, saying it would start at 10am. The two leaders have praised each other in recent weeks, despite Moscow's ongoing assault on Ukraine. Putin said last week that he had 'great respect' for Trump and that US ties were improving. Trump said Putin's statements were 'very nice'.
