T-Mobile ending DEI programs as it seeks US FCC approval for 2 deals

Reuters09-07-2025
July 9 (Reuters) - Wireless carrier T-Mobile US (TMUS.O), opens new tab said on Wednesday it is ending its diversity, equity and inclusion programs, under pressure from the Trump administration as it seeks regulatory approval for two major deals.
T-Mobile said in a letter to Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr made public on Wednesday that the wireless company is ending its DEI-related policies "not just in name, but in substance."
T-Mobile said it will no longer have any individual roles or teams focused on DEI, is removing any references to DEI on its websites and has removed references to DEI from its employee training materials.
Carr said in a text message he was pleased with the changes. "This is another good step forward for equal opportunity, nondiscrimination and the public interest."
T-Mobile is awaiting FCC approval to buy almost all of regional carrier United States Cellular's (USM.N), opens new tab wireless operations including customers, stores and 30% of its spectrum assets in a deal valued at $4.4 billion.
The FCC is also weighing a separate transaction in which T-Mobile would establish a joint venture with KKR (KKR.N), opens new tab to acquire internet service provider Metronet, which reaches more than 2 million homes and businesses in 17 states.
T-Mobile plans at closing to invest about $4.9 billion to acquire a 50% equity stake in the joint venture and 100% of Metronet's residential fiber retail operations and customers.
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez, a Democrat, criticized T-Mobile's action saying "in yet another cynical bid to win FCC regulatory approval, T-Mobile is making a mockery of its professed commitment to eliminating discrimination, promoting fairness, and amplifying underrepresented voices."
The FCC in May approved Verizon Communications'(VZ.N), opens new tab $20 billion deal to acquire fiber-optic internet providers Frontier Communications (FYBR.O), opens new tab after the largest U.S. telecom company agreed to end its DEI program and after the FCC opened an investigation.
Carr, a Republican designated by Trump in January as chair, told Comcast (CMCSA.O), opens new tab in February he was opening a probe into the NBC News-parent company's promotion of DEI programs.
In January, Trump issued sweeping executive orders to dismantle U.S. government DEI programs, and pressured the private sector to join the initiative.

Walmart announces major store shakeup set to transform how customers shop

Walmart is taking its show on the road — literally — with a fleet of new mobile stores. The mobile pop-up stores on wheels will be rolling into parks, festivals, and concerts across America and are designed to appeal to Gen Z. Dubbed 'your FYP on wheels,' the pop-up trucks feature Gen Z-friendly themes like Rodeo Dream, K-Pop Era, and Nature Break. It is a nod to TikTok's 'For You Page' (FYP), the first screen users see when they open the app, filled with algorithm-curated videos tailored to their tastes. Inside, shoppers will find giveaways, merch, photo ops, and immersive experiences designed to go viral — while promoting Walmart's brand as younger, cooler, and social media–savvy. The trucks will crisscross the country now through November, popping up at festivals, marathons, parks, and major events in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and New York. Scroll down to see the full list. 'Walmart is hitting the road with a fleet of head-turning delivery trucks, packed with experiences to level up what you love,' the chain said in. 'Whatever you're into — we get it, we have it, and we can deliver it. Who knew?' they added. Walmart, the biggest retailer in the US, has been pushing hard into the e-commerce space, even directly competing with Amazon during its Prime Day sales event this year. Thanks to its aggressive push — including running its event for almost a week and extending its discounts in-store — Walmart outperformed Amazon across several key metrics. Spending on soared 24 percent compared to 2024, Bloomberg data showed — six times faster than Prime Day's year‑over‑year growth. Web traffic told a similar story, with Walmart surging 14 percent while Amazon stayed flat, according to Similarweb. However, some of Walmart's digitization efforts have been met with pushback from the brand's loyal customers. Electronic shelf labels — tiny digital price tags that can change in real time — have become particularly unpopular. The technology is designed to save staff time, reduce paper waste, and allow for easier inventory updates but customers fear sneaky price hikes and vanishing deals. Sam's Club, Walmart's membership discount stores, rolled out AI-powered 'Scan & Go' tech earlier this year. The trucks will stop at major music events, marathon festivals and parks across the country The scanners allow shoppers skip the line and walk straight out the door once they're done shopping. The move is controversial because it uses a network of cameras and sensors to track shoppers and their carts. In addition, the checkout-free experience requires all customers to use a smartphone and download the store's app. This could pose a challenge to older shoppers who may struggle with technology. US equity funds see sharp outflows on tariff caution, economic concerns

Aug 8 (Reuters) - U.S. investors divested riskier equity funds and significantly invested in the safety of money market funds in the week through August 6, spooked by President Donald Trump's new trade tariffs and discouraging economic readings. They pulled out a net $13.7 billion from U.S. equity funds in their largest weekly sales since June 25 while channeling a net $78.85 billion - the largest amount since December 4 - into money market funds, LSEG Lipper data showed. "Our base case remains that the U.S. effective tariff rate will settle at around 15% - enough to weigh on growth and lift inflation, but not enough to derail the U.S. economy or the equity rally," said Mark Haefele, Chief Investment Officer at UBS Global Wealth Management. "We expect near-term volatility to continue, but think investors should stick to their longer-term financial plan." The small-cap equity funds segment suffered the biggest weekly net sales since December 18, to the tune of approximately $5.2 billion. Large-cap and mid-cap funds meanwhile had a net $7 billion and $1.71 billion in weekly disposals. Sectoral funds were, however, net recipient of $806 million worth of weekly inflows with communication services and industrials leading the way, securing a net $1.17 billion and $586 million, respectively in inflows. Weekly net investments in bond funds, meanwhile, jumped to a 11-week high of $7.39 billion during the week. The short-to-intermediate investment-grade funds, short-to-intermediate government and treasury funds, and municipal debt funds attracted a massive $3.22 billion, $2.43 billion and $1.66 billion, respectively in net investments.
