"Investors look at growth rates and stocks are supposed to be indicators of expectations for the future and a weakening dollar and continued growth in
emerging markets
is very positive for emerging markets," says

What is happening in the world, one side there is this interplay between weakness in
dollar index
and pronounced uptick in equity, on the other side you have got uptick in bond yields and inflation concerns. So, who will get it right, the bond bears or the equity bulls?
Seth R Freeman:
Well, it is certainly inconsistent. We would expect to see one direction or the other and we are just seeing this. It is indicative of the lack of consensus on both the economy in general and inflation.

What should one do because the most crowded trade in the world which is the long dollar index or long live dollar now seems to be reversing. What could be the impact of this adjustment?
Seth R Freeman:
It is very sentiment driven at this point that the long-dated debt is looking so weak and globally and big investors are looking at the increase in the deficit that we are going to have as a result of the so-called big beautiful bill.
What is your view on emerging market equities considering that the weakness in the dollar index could clearly have an impact on long EM trade?
Seth R Freeman:
Well, again, investors look at growth rates and stocks are supposed to be indicators of expectations for the future and a weakening dollar and continued growth in emerging markets is very positive for emerging markets.
Live Events
And one is wondering where would India lie in the pie when you talk about emerging markets, clearly Brazil seems to be the favourite right now looking at how their
equity markets
have performed. But how do you think money is going to manoeuvre itself within the EM pool?
Seth R Freeman:
It is going to really depend on geopolitical issues with China frankly. The general sense of affinity from the US for investing in China does not change.
India is going to be a longer-term beneficiary. And we have other things going on with Mexico and certainly with Canada. And so, we are looking at some very complex issues just here in North America. The other aspects we are seeing today the Korean economy high inflation, but still the overall long-term growth rate in India is positive.
So, if you have to choose an asset class for rest of the year, which asset class you would like to choose?
Seth R Freeman:
I am more oriented right now towards fixed income. At this moment in time that is a safer place to put money. We still don't really know the outcome of the Trump tariff activity. We have got July 9th in the wings. He is having problems negotiating with Japan. There is just too much uncertainty. At the same time, of course, in the last two weeks, the US indices are reaching all-time highs. So, I may not be the best guy.

Is It Worth Bearing Heavy Tariffs For Cheaper Russian Oil; Has India Made A Dangerous Bargain?

New Delhi: Nobel Prize-winning economist Abhijit Banerjee has urged India to reflect on the cost of cheaper Russian oil. He questioned whether paying high U.S. tariffs is worth the savings. His comments came days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25% extra tariff on Indian goods. The action targets India's continued large-scale purchases of discounted Russian crude. With the imposition of new tariff, Indian products entering the U.S. market will now face a total duty of 50%. This marks one of the highest rates imposed by Trump on any country. The additional tariff takes effect on August 27. The long-discussed India-US trade deal remains stalled. Washington seeks greater access to India's farm and dairy sectors, while New Delhi has held back on concessions. The impact could be severe. About $27 billion worth of Indian exports without special trade exemptions may lose competitiveness in the United States. Speaking to news agency PTI on the sidelines of an event at BML Munjal University, Banerjee said the government should weigh options carefully. He suggested exploring whether the United States would remove tariffs if India halted Russian oil imports. India remains the largest global buyer of Russian crude. In July, refiners purchased 1.6 million barrels per day. For August and September, no new orders have been placed. Black Sea oil now offers a discount of only about $2 per barrel. In 2024-25, India imported 88 million tonnes of Russian oil. This formed a large share of the 245 million tonnes of total crude imports. Oil contracts for August and September were finalised before Trump's tariff announcement on August 7. Banerjee emphasised that at a 25% tariff, some Indian exports had already lost their price advantage. Raising it to 50% may not change much for those products. He added that policy circles are already discussing a cut in Russian crude purchases. On the economy, he described the current year's outlook as weaker than expected. He cited low private investment and pressure on the middle class. He pointed to hiring freezes in major firms such as the Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) and stagnant wages in the information technology (IT) sector. These issues, he said, remain unresolved. India's seafood sector is already feeling the strain. The Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) has urged the commerce and finance ministries for urgent relief. It says nearly $2 billion in shrimp exports face serious obstacles in the U.S. market due to Trump's tariff. The SEAI seeks a 30% increase in working capital through soft loans, with interest subsidies and a 240-day moratorium on loans for pre- and post-packing operations. SEAI Secretary-General K.N. Raghavan told PTI the shrimp industry is under heavy stress and needs immediate government intervention.

This 130-year-old US photography brand may soon go out of business; company says: 'These conditions raise substantial doubt about...'

Popular photography brand, Eastman Kodak Co ., has raised "substantial doubt" about continuing its operations in the coming days. The 130-year-old company has suggested that it may soon go out of business. The company stated that it may not be able to meet its debt obligations, a disclosure that also reportedly caused its shares to fall by over 13% recently. Based in Rochester, New York, Kodak reported having $155 million in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, which includes $70 million held within the United States. The company's financial struggles follow a move last year (which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal) that ended its retirement income plan to reduce its debt burden. What Kodak said in its regulatory filing In its regulatory (as seen by The Independent), Kodak said: 'Kodak has debt coming due within 12 months and does not have committed financing or available liquidity to meet such debt obligations if they were to become due in accordance with their current terms. These conditions raise substantial doubt about Kodak's ability to continue as a going concern' In a recent statement, David Bullwinkle, Kodak's CFO, said that the company expects to know by this week about how it will meet its obligations to pay all pension plan participants and expects to complete the reversion by December. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo Founded by George Eastman in 1880, Kodak played a significant role in making photography accessible in the early 20th century. It became widely recognised for its Brownie and Instamatic cameras, along with its yellow-and-red film boxes. The company first faced setbacks due to competition from its Japanese rivals and later struggled to adapt to the transition from film to digital technology. In 2012, Kodak filed for bankruptcy protection after facing rising competition, the growing adoption of digital photography, and increasing debt. Following this, the company sold several businesses and patents and shut down the camera manufacturing unit that had established its reputation. A year later, it received approval to exit court oversight, shifting its focus to becoming a smaller company specialising in commercial and packaging printing. Currently, Kodak is close to completing a manufacturing plant for regulated pharmaceutical products. It already produces unregulated key starting materials for pharmaceuticals, while production at the upgraded facility is expected to begin later this year. Rain affects gas supply to Rudrapur SIDCUL area, over 50 units affected

Rudrapur: Industrial production in Uttarakhand's Rudrapur, district headquarters of Udham Singh Nagar, has come to a grinding halt after piped natural gas (PNG) supply from Indian Oil and Adani Gas was suspended on Sunday. Over 50 industries — including a prominent automobile company and eight of its vendor firms — temporarily shut down their plants, resulting in an estimated loss of over Rs 50 crore, officials said on Tuesday. According to officials, the disruption was triggered by damage to the pipeline near Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh due to heavy rains, severely hitting PNG-dependent units in SIDCUL industrial area. Sources said that while the shutdown on Sunday had little immediate impact due to the weekly holiday, the crisis deepened on Monday as PNG-dependent industries began scaling down or halting operations, while units with electricity-based alternatives managed partial production. For most, the loss was unavoidable. "This is nothing short of a disaster," said Srikar Sinha, president of SIDCUL entrepreneur welfare society. "PNG supply has been down since Sunday afternoon, and GAIL officials are unable to confirm when the problem will be resolved. If this continues for another day or two, the situation will escalate into a major crisis. The state govt and district administration must step in with an urgent solution." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo Society secretary Gajendra Singh said that nearly 90% of SIDCUL's auto industry operations got crippled. "Initially, the supplier said the shutdown would last 72 hours, but now there is no update from the company. The govt must act immediately," he said. District magistrate Nitin Singh Bhadauria confirmed that talks had been held with Moradabad administration and company officials. "The pipeline damage was caused by heavy rainfall in parts of UP. Restoration work is underway, and supply will be resumed soon," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
