Bathinda: A two-time former minister in the SAD-BJP govt, Sikandar Singh Maluka, has rejoined the Shiromani Akali Dal . Maluka had earlier joined the Akali Dal Sudhar Lehar, which had formed by dissidents displeased with party president Sukhbir Singh Badal. After rejoining the party, Maluka said he would campaign for the party candidate in the Ludhiana West byelection. Maluka's daughter-in-law, Parampal Kaur Sidhu, contested the 2024 parliamentary elections from Bathinda as a BJP nominee against SAD's Harsimrat Kaur Badal. Maluka, who was elected the MLA from Rampura Phul in 1997 and 2012, was displeased when his request to be fielded from Maur seat for the 2022 assembly polls was not accepted. Speaking to TOI on Saturday, Maluka said, "I have done ghar vapsi (returned home), and now whatever duty the party assigns, I will discharge it with full devotion, including campaigning for the party candidate in Ludhiana West." Maluka was elevated to the minister's rank in the Parkash Singh Badal govt in 1997, despite being a first-time MLA. He was again made a minister in 2012 in the Badal cabinet. TMC warns Anubrata Mondal, Kajal Sheikh against ‘infighting' ahead of 2026 Assembly elections
The Top leaders of the Trinamool Congress, including party state president Subrata Bakshi, met Anubrata Mondal and his party rival Kajal Sheikh on Saturday ahead of the July 21 Martyrs' Day preparation meeting. The meeting, which took place at the party's Bhabanipur office, was also attended by Kolkata Mayor and state minister Firhad Hakim and state Sports Minister Aroop Biswas. According to party sources, both Mondal and Sheikh were told that no 'infighting' would be tolerated ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. They were instructed to refrain from making public statements against each other. If repeated, the party warned, strict disciplinary action would follow. Mondal, in particular, was advised to maintain composure and avoid provocative behavior, the sources said. The closed-door meeting came weeks after a purported audio clip surfaced in which Mondal was allegedly heard using abusive language during a phone call with a police inspector. The Birbhum district police have since registered an FIR against Mondal. After the meeting, neither Mondal nor Sheikh made any public comments. Senior leaders such as Bakshi and Hakim also chose not to brief the media. However, a senior TMC leader claimed, 'Whenever Anubrata and Kajal speak publicly, controversy follows. The party likely told them to stay silent at least until the Assembly elections to avoid further issues.' Five foreign educational institutions seeking to set up campuses in India get letters of intent
Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday (June 14, 2025) handed over letters of intent to five foreign educational institutions that had expressed interest in setting up campuses in India. The institutions are Aberdeen University of Scotland, University of York in the U.K., Illinois Institute of Technology in the U.S., Western Australia University and IED, a design institute from Europe. These institutions will have their campuses at the 'international education city' that is being planned in Navi Mumbai. The initiative is in line with the National Education Policy 2020, which allows foreign universities to establish campuses in India. 'India can be a global knowledge destination. We have simplified the regulations. We are enabling joint degrees, dual and twinning programs, academic credit mobility and institutional autonomy. Our approach is clear, open, inclusive, ambitious and confident,' Mr. Pradhan said at the event held in Mumbai. In his speech, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke of more plans for the State. 'This EduCity is in the vicinity of New Mumbai Airport. Apart from EduCity, we are creating a MediCity, we are creating a SportsCity, and also the one which we are yet to announce formally is our Innovation City. This Innovation City will be a one of its kind, playing host to the innovation ecosystem,' Mr. Fadnavis said. In a media interaction later, Mr. Fadnavis told reporters that decisions regarding hiring, affirmative action and admission processes will be taken by the authorities of the universities and the State government would not intervene in that.
