Aizawl: Eighteen leading companies, including multinational giants, have entered the competitive bidding process to design the master plan for the ambitious Peace City project proposed for Thenzawl town in Serchhip district.
The project aims to create a modern, sustainable urban space for around 10 lakh residents.
During a review meeting on Monday, chaired by CM Lalduhoma, urban development & poverty alleviation secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau said the Request for Proposal was issued on July 22. The consultant selection is expected by early Sept, with work commencing in Oct and major planning phases concluding within the current financial year.
The Peace City initiative, backed by a Rs 10 crore allocation from the ministry of housing & urban affairs (MoHUA), has ignited political controversy. Opposition parties, led by the Mizo National Front (MNF), accuse the CM of harbouring a hidden agenda to relocate the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl, his constituency.
MNF leader and former CM Zoramthanga likened Lalduhoma's actions to those of medieval ruler Muhammad bin Tughlaq, notorious for his erratic capital relocation. In response, the urban development & poverty alleviation department clarified that there are no plans to move the capital, attributing the confusion to a miscommunication from the Centre.

Reliance Industries Gross Debt Rises 7 pc At Rs 3.47 Lakh Crore In FY25, Net Debt Hits Rs 1.17 Lakh Crore

New Delhi: Reliance Industries Limited's (RIL) gross debt and net debt for the financial year 2024-25 stood at Rs 3.47 lakh crore (USD 40.7 billion) and Rs 1.17 lakh crore (USD 13.7 billion) respectively, according to the company's integrated Annual Report 2024-25. The company had registered Rs 3.24 lakh crore in gross debt in FY24. Despite a strong internal cash flow generation, India's biggest private sector conglomerate's leverage remains noteworthy, underscoring the capital-intensive nature of its operations. "Robust internal cashflow generation supported investments in growth opportunities across business, while maintaining a conservative balance sheet and investment grade credit ratings," the company said in its Annual Report. Meanwhile, the Mukesh Ambani-led company reported capital expenditure for the financial year at Rs 1,31,107 crore ($15.3 billion). In FY 2023-24, capex stood at Rs 1,31,769 crore. According to the company's annual report, in FY25, investments were largely directed towards new O2C projects, Retail store expansion, augmenting Digital Services infrastructure and building manufacturing assets in New Energy. Meanwhile, RIL's standalone revenue was at Rs 5,57,163 crore ($65.2 billion), lower by 3.1 per cent as compared to Rs 5,74,956 crore in FY24. EBITDA for the standalone entity fell 14.2 per cent to Rs 74,163 crore ($8.7 billion) from Rs 86,393 crore for the year-ago period, the company said. Despite strong coverage from leading brokerages after the Indian conglomerate reported better-than-expected earnings in the first quarter of the current fiscal year (Q1 FY26), RIL shares fell more than 7% over the past 30 days. According to market analysts, the stock is currently in a corrective phase because the Mukesh Ambani-led company has suffered a significant setback as a result of US President Donald Trump's crackdown on India's imports of Russian oil. In order to process the cheap crude at its massive oil refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat, RIL was a major importer. However, the shares may start attracting investors from next week as the US hinted at not imposing additional 25 per cent tariffs on the import of Russian oil. Brokerages like Morgan Stanley, Motilal Oswal, Novuma, and Macquarie have either maintained or increased their rating for RIL's stock after the company reported a strong 78 per cent year-over-year increase in its net profit at Rs 26,994 crore in Q1.

Uphaar tragedy: Rs 60 crore paid by Ansal brothers for trauma centre utilised at 3 hospitals, says Delhi govt

The Delhi government has informed the Supreme Court that the Rs 60 crore paid by the Ansal brothers for constructing a trauma centre in memory of the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy victims has been utilised at three government hospitals. These hospitals were selected for the establishment of trauma centres based on urgent public need in the high-density and underserved regions of Delhi, it said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo "It is further submitted that while the original direction of this court referred to the construction of a trauma centre at a suitable location in Dwarka, at the time there existed no GNCTD hospital in Dwarka where such a trauma centre could be established. "However, the Indira Gandhi Hospital, located in Sector 9, Dwarka, has since been constructed and became functional on May 10, 2021. Live Events "The hospital has a total bed capacity of 1,241, including 330 ICU beds, and is fully operational, benefitting the residents of Dwarka and surrounding areas," the affidavit said. The Delhi government submitted that it has gone beyond the original directions by establishing trauma centres at three different locations to maximise public benefit. AVUT office-bearer Neelam Krishnamoothy, who lost her two children in the 1997 tragedy in which 59 people were killed, had earlier said, "It is outrageous to hear the Delhi government claim in the Supreme Court that the Rs 60 crore has already been utilised despite the court's categorical direction that these funds were to be used solely for building a trauma centre in memory of the Uphaar victims at a suitable site in Dwarka." On May 7, the top court issued a notice to the Delhi government, seeking its response on an application filed by the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT). AVUT's plea said, "While about 10 years have elapsed since the stipulated fine amount was deposited (by the Ansal brothers) with the office of the chief secretary, government of NCT of Delhi, on November 9, 2015, the trauma centre envisaged in this court's directions remain a nonstarter, with no discernable steps having been taken towards its construction." On September 22, 2015, the top court directed that the trauma centre was required to be completed within two years in memory of the fire victims in the Dwarka area. The AVUT alleged the Delhi government flouted the apex court's order. The apex court in September 2015 held the Ansal brothers, Gopal and Sushil Ansal, guilty of causing death due to negligence for the fire incident of June 13, 1997, at the Uphar cinema hall. Apart from the one-year sentence the two brothers had to undergo, the top court also fined them Rs 60 crore. AVUT's application was filed in its pending appeal challenging a Delhi High Court order of December 2008 reducing the two-year sentence awarded to Ansals by the trial court to one year. The duo was convicted under Sections 304A (causing death due to negligence), 337 (endangering life), and 338 (causing grievous hurt), among other provisions, of the IPC. Initially, the top court's two-judge bench, which heard the appeal, delivered a split verdict on March 5, 2014. The matter was then heard by a three-judge bench, which reduced the Rs 100 crore fine to Rs 60 crore, to be shared equally by the two brothers. AVUT subsequently filed a review petition, which the top court dismissed in February 2017. The top court, however, reiterated that the Rs 60 crore amount was to be paid to the chief secretary of the Delhi government, to be utilised for the construction of a trauma centre dedicated in the memory of the victims.
