Jon M. Chu to direct live-action ‘Hot Wheels' movie for Warner Bros. and Mattel

Express Tribune07-07-2025
After the success of Wicked and Crazy Rich Asians, Jon M. Chu has been tapped to direct a live-action Hot Wheels movie, teaming up with Mattel, Warner Bros. Pictures, and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot.
The high-octane film will be based on Mattel's iconic die-cast toy car line, which has sold over 8 billion vehicles worldwide. While plot details remain under wraps, Hot Wheels is being billed as an action-packed adventure featuring some of the world's sleekest vehicles.
Writers Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, known for They Cloned Tyrone and Creed II, have signed on to pen the script. Chu will produce the film alongside Abrams, Mattel's Robbie Brenner, and Michael Bostic, with studio executives from Warner Bros., Bad Robot, and Mattel overseeing the project.
In a statement, Chu said, 'Hot Wheels has always been about more than speed, it's about imagination, connection, and the thrill of play. Bringing that spirit to the big screen is an incredible opportunity.'
Mattel Studios' President Robbie Brenner praised Chu's vision, calling him 'the ideal storyteller' to bring Hot Wheels to life, adding that the film will blend 'visual spectacle' with 'unforgettable narratives.'
The project marks a continued expansion of Mattel's cinematic universe following Barbie's global success. Other toy-based films in the works include adaptations of UNO, Polly Pocket, and Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots.
No release date has been confirmed, but fans can expect Hot Wheels to hit the fast lane as the next big entry in Mattel's growing film slate.

'Weapons' 'true story' origins explained by director Zach Cregger

Weapons opens with the line, 'This is a true story,' a statement that has led some viewers to believe the film's events actually happened. While the premise — involving the unexplained disappearance of 17 children from a small town — sounds like a case fit for a true crime documentary, the plot is entirely fictional. The story was shaped by a real event in the life of director Zach Cregger: the sudden death of his best friend, Trevor Moore. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cregger said, 'I had a tragedy in my life that was really, really tough. Someone very, very, very close to me died suddenly and… I just started writing Weapons… as a way to reckon with my own emotions.' Certain chapters of the film are autobiographical, reflecting his own experience of grief. However, the missing children narrative and other plot elements were invented. To promote the film, Warner Bros created the website featuring fictional in-universe news articles, further blurring the line between fact and fiction. In Rolling Stone, Cregger explained that the loss occurred during post-production on his 2022 film Barbarian. 'Like the rest of the world, I don't want to watch another horror movie about grief,' he said, though he admitted the themes of loss became central to Weapons. Conversations with fellow director Ari Aster encouraged him to embrace the personal aspects of the script. The director described Weapons as more inward-looking compared to Barbarian, focusing on his own life and emotions. The opening line, 'This is a true story,' was the first sentence he wrote, using it as a starting point to explore the fictional mystery. While the events of Weapons did not occur, Cregger's personal experiences deeply influenced its emotional core, shaping a narrative that combines fictional horror with real-life inspiration.

The Batman sequel finally gets filming date

Robert Pattinson's return as Gotham's brooding vigilante is officially back on track, at least according to Warner Bros. Discovery's latest shareholder update. The studio announced that Matt Reeves' highly anticipated sequel, The Batman Part II, is slated to begin filming in spring 2026 with a theatrical release set for October 2027. The update marks the end of a prolonged silence around the project, which has experienced notable delays. Originally planned for 2026, the sequel's release was pushed back by a full year. While Warner Bros. attributes the lag to Reeves' perfectionism and creative process, fans and insiders continue to speculate on possible internal tensions and production hiccups that have yet to surface publicly. Adding fuel to the speculation is James Gunn's vocal defence of the delay. In several social media posts, the DC Studios co-chief dismissed online criticism, saying that large gaps between major film instalments are nothing new. 'Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can,' Gunn insisted, warning fans to 'get off Matt's nuts'+ and let the creative process unfold without pressure. Despite Gunn's efforts to calm expectations, the lengthy production cycle has opened the door to rumours. Some claim Warner Bros. is strategically spacing out DC titles in light of its recent reboot efforts, while others believe internal reshuffling might be slowing development. Meanwhile, the recent promotional campaign for American Eagle raised eyebrows after it featured a model styled closely after Pattinson's Batman, a curious move that some interpreted as premature hype-building, given filming hasn't even started. Whether this was a calculated brand tie-in or an accidental leak of character imagery remains unknown. For now, fans can only wait. With the script reportedly complete and a two-year runway ahead, Warner Bros. is banking on The Batman Part II to anchor its evolving DC slate. But the buzz behind the scenes suggests not everyone is convinced this saga will unfold as smoothly as planned.

'Wicked: For Good' unveils first look featurette and posters for Elphaba and Glinda

Universal Pictures has shared a brand-new 'First Look' featurette for Wicked: For Good, offering fans a deeper glimpse into the sequel, along with two newly released posters of Elphaba and Glinda, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The first Wicked film broke records as the most successful Broadway-to-film adaptation ever, grossing $729 million globally. The sequel continues the untold story of the witches of Oz. Directed again by Jon M. Chu, Wicked: For Good picks up with Elphaba now cast as The Wicked Witch of the West, living in the Ozian forest. She continues to resist The Wizard's regime and fight for the rights of Oz's Animals, while trying to reveal the truths she uncovered. Meanwhile, Glinda has embraced her public image as Oz's symbol of Goodness, living in the Emerald City under Madame Morrible's direction (played by Michelle Yeoh). As she prepares to marry Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), Glinda becomes increasingly unsettled by her unresolved bond with Elphaba. The narrative also sees the return of key characters like Boq (Ethan Slater), Nessarose (Marissa Bode), and new faces Pfannee and ShenShen, played by Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James. Sharon D. Clarke voices Dulcibear, Elphaba's former nanny. As tensions rise in Oz and old friendships are tested, Elphaba and Glinda face one final turning point. Wicked: For Good arrives in theatres worldwide on November 21.
