Explained: How A Hair Cut In Space Differs From One On Earth

NDTV20 hours ago
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has made history by becoming the first Indian to get a haircut in microgravity, while living aboard his home away from home at the International Space Station.
Captain Shukla had spent nearly 30 days in quarantine at the Kennedy Space Center as his flight repeatedly got postponed from the first announced date of May 29 to finally lifting off on June 25. This is why American astronaut, Nichol Ayers gave him a haircut when he was in space. Many astronauts who stay for long durations in space also get haircuts. So, that is a normal thing.
But how does a haircut in space even work? Is it a lot different from one on Earth? Turns out, not really!
In space, hair doesn't fall, it floats
Getting a haircut in space is not very different from getting a haircut on earth. The only difference is in space, when the hair has been cut, it can fly all over the place. So, one needs a vacuum cleaner, which pulls in the hair that is being cut.
Just like how bread is not allowed in space because crumbs can float, hair too needs to be managed carefully.
No shower after haircut
In India, especially for men, a post-haircut bath is almost necessary. But at the ISS, the astronauts cannot take a bath as there is no running water available. So, astronauts usually do a dry cleaning of their body using soap and wet towels.
No Hair Stylists in Space
Unlike Earth, one does not have a hairstylist at the International Space Station. It is a fellow astronaut who is doing the haircuts. So, no hairstyles.
American astronaut Nichole Ayers was seen giving Shukla a rare hairdo in space.
Astronaut Ayers remarked, "We said goodbye to our Ax4 friends today. I was just reminiscing about the haircuts from last weekend. After a long quarantine, I think it was nice for them. We joked about how I might have a future in the haircutting business when I get back on Earth, but the reviews are still out."
Ayers is a Major in the US Air Force and has spent 122 days in space. She has conducted spacewalks totalling about six hours. This would probably make her the most qualified hair stylist Shukla would ever get in his life.

Cinepolis bets on blockbusters to drive double-digit India revenue growth

Mexican theatre chain Cinepolis expects double-digit revenue growth in India this year as it opens more screens and bets on a major Hollywood and Bollywood lineup to bring in moviegoers. Western studios are counting on this summer to reverse a downtrend worsened by the 2023 Hollywood writers' strike, with blockbusters including "Jurassic World: Rebirth" and "F1" hitting theatres through September. "Hollywood has a very strong lineup, so (does) regional and Bollywood," said Cinepolis India Managing Director Devang Sampat, adding sharp marketing with malls and production houses could lift admissions, which are still 20 per cent below pre-COVID levels. Theater chains face increasing competition from streaming apps, concerts and live sports. Still, Cinepolis, which operates 485 screen in India out of 6,800 globally, is looking to open 20-25 screens this year to drive revenue growth, Sampat said. As for longer-term expansion, the company is taking it "one year at a time," he added. Sampat did not disclose 2024 revenue or profit but said Cinepolis' annual revenue over the years, excluding the impact of the pandemic, had grown in the high single-digit to early-double-digit percentage range. According to industry data, Cinepolis reported a revenue of 13.46 billion rupees ($156.58 million) in the 2024 financial year, up 31 per cent year-on-year, with net profit at 321 million rupees - its first annual profit in at least half a decade. Meanwhile, analysts expect revenue at PVR Inox, India's largest multiplex chain, to grow roughly 18 per cent in the fiscal year that started on April 1, led by a strong movie lineup and plans to add 100-110 screens to its network of over 1,700. Indian multiplex revenues are expected to jump 20 per cent-25 per cent, fueled by big-budget movies such as "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning", Rajinikanth's "Coolie", and Rishab Shetty's "Kantara: Chapter 1," said Shobit Singhal, research analyst at Anand Rathi.

Indian Cricket Teams Chat With Idris Elba At King Charles' Home, Video Goes Viral

Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah met English actor Idris Elba and King Charles III in London, discussing cricket. India's Test captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant, besides ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, were on Tuesday seen interacting with English actor and kickboxer Idris Elba, who had a heart-to-heart chat with the Indian cricketers, who had travelled to King Charles' London home for a meet and greet. The 76-year-old British Monarch spent a considerable time discussing cricket with Indian cricketers, a meeting that Gill termed as 'amazing" during his chat with the media. Gill spoke about the tremendous support that his side always gets from the Indian diaspora whenever it plays in the United Kingdom. 'I saw you guys in the garden and I was like Yo! It's a real pleasure meeting you. Yes, please," Elba said in his customary style while interacting with Gill and his team. Watch the video here: 'Hi, nice to meet you. How are you doing?" Elba interacted with Harmanpreet Kaur and her team as well. Meanwhile, King Charles III felt Mohammed Siraj's dismissal was an 'unfortunate one" and could not help but ask Gill about it as he welcomed India's men's and women's cricket teams in the gardens of Clarence House in London. Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami and Deputy High Commissioner Sujit Ghosh, along with Congress Rajya Sabha MP and BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla and secretary Devajit Saikia, were present as well. 'It was amazing. I think he (King Charles) is very kind and generous… we had some really good conversations," Gill said after the meet and greet. On Monday, India lost a close Test by 22 runs with the last batter, Siraj, getting bowled off England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir's ball. The delivery trickled back to clip the bails after Siraj played a defensive stroke. 'He (The King) did tell us that the way our last batter got out was quite unfortunate, the ball rolling onto the stumps. And he was just asking us, 'How did you feel after that?' And we told him it was an unfortunate match for us… but hopefully, we'll have better luck in both the next games," Gill said. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 10:59 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
