Horse racing tips – Monday February 17: Southwell and Wolverhampton

Telegraph17-02-2025

Our betting expert has two selections from today's jumps meeting at Southwell (1.35-4.45pm) and one from the all-weather card at Wolverhampton (4.25-8.30). Monday's line-up is completed by the National Hunt fixture at Carlisle (1.20-5.05).

3.05 Southwell – Play At The Races Stableduel Maiden Hurdle (2m)
Today's nap is the Ben Pauling-trained WOLF MOON, who bids to go one better than his racecourse debut last month at Southwell (2m, soft).
That day he did everything but beat the 2024 German Derby winner Palladium, who is currently 16/1 for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham and overpriced according to his trainer's recent comments.
The form of that race has been boosted since by Karton Plein, who finished 18½ lengths behind Wolf Moon and a further two behind the winner, shedding his maiden tag on his subsequent outing.
None of today's opponents have form that is likely to trouble a Grade 1 contender at Cheltenham so there's confidence that the week will begin with a win.
4.25 Wolverhampton – Gamble Responsibly At BetUK Handicap (1m 1½f)
Our only selection from the all-weather card at Dunstall Park, FAST SOCIETY, can help trainer Andrew Balding continue the form that has brought him a 30 per cent strike-rate over the past 14 days.
With two wins from three starts in novice events, the four-year-old gelding showed plenty of early promise. He hasn't yet got his head in front in two runs this winter, but his second here last time out was very promising and, notably, he currently holds a Lincoln Handicap entry for next month.
As the youngest horse in this field, Fast Society has the most scope for improvement, especially with this small step up in trip from 1m 1½f to 1m ½f.
3.40 Southwell – Watch Unbridled On attheraces.com Handicap Hurdle (2m 4½f)
OWL OF ATHENS landed a huge gamble for his connections in similar conditions last month when he recorded an eight-length victory at Uttoxeter (2m 4f, good to soft).
Given his 11lb rise for that win it's understandable that there hasn't been the same market support for today's favourite, however when a horse lands a gamble of that size there is usually plenty of improvement in the tank.
The form has been franked since with the Icaque de L'Isle, the third at Uttoxeter, winning on his next start at Lingfield last week.

Mohammed Kudus transfer odds: Chelsea and Newcastle battling for £70m-rated West Ham star, Liverpool in contention

CHELSEA are the odds-on 4/5 favourites to sign Mohammed Kudus this summer. That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've priced up Kudus' next destination should West Ham United agree to his sale. Kudus, 24 has no shortage of admirers with clubs in Europe and Saudi reportedly monitoring his situation. However, anyone considering the Ghana international will likely need to pay an eye-watering sum with three yers remaining on his contract plus the option for a further year. It's believed that West Ham would be prepared to listen to offers in the region of £70million for the player they signed from Ajax for £38m in 2023. Kudus has scored 19 goals and provided 13 assists in 80 appearances for the Hammers, but the club might reluctantly sell to finance other deals for manager Graham Potter. So who are the favourites to sign Mohammed Kudus? 1 Chelsea are the leading contenders at 4/5 following claims they've added him to their list of potential simmer targets. It's also been reported that Chelsea would be prepared to include goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in the deal. However, Newcastle (5/2) aren't far behind in Betfair's markets with Football Insider claiming they've switched their attentions to Kudus having missed out on Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: "As Graham Potter prepares for a much-needed revamp of his West Ham squad ahead of the new season, Chelsea have emerged as the odds-on favourites to sign Mohammed Kudus. Newcastle follow at 5/2, with Arsenal 9/2. Meanwhile, a move to Premier League champions Liverpool is 13/2. "With plenty of interest in Kudus during the early stages of the summer transfer window, other potential destinations for the 24-year-old include Atletico Madrid at 15/2, Man City and Man United, 12/1 with AC Milan 16/1.'

Hamish shows plenty of heart for Tapster triumph

The William Haggas-trained gelding had won 12 of his 24 previous starts, with eight of those victories coming at Group Three level. Making his first appearance as a nine-year-old, having been off the track since landing a Listed prize at the Curragh in November, Hamish was an even-money favourite in the hands of Tom Marquand and while he proved difficult to handle before the off, he was as his usual professional self during the race itself. German Derby winner Palladium, making his first appearance for John and Thady Gosden after winning his only start over hurdles for Nicky Henderson, put up a bold show from the front, while his stablemate Military Academy was also right in there pitching in the closing stages of the mile-and-a-half Listed contest. "What a superstar!" @HuntyCaller 🤩 9-year-old Hamish gets his head in front once again for the Somerville Lodge team! 🙌@WilliamHaggas | @TomMarquand — Goodwood Racecourse (@Goodwood_Races) June 8, 2025 There was little to choose between the Gosden pair and Hamish racing inside the last half-furlong, but it was the latter who found most for pressure in the rain-softened ground to prevail by a neck from Military Academy, with Palladium just a head further behind in third. On his pre-race antics, Maureen Haggas, assistant to her husband, told Racing TV: 'He sat on a car the other day, apparently! I was away for a day, 'Tinks' (Andrew Tinkler) rode him and he was very apologetic the next day that he'd wrapped him around a car and a gate post! 'We introduced a pony after he ran at Goodwood two years ago and he's been pretty good everywhere until today, where he was absolutely appalling again! The tack fell off about four times, eventually we managed to get it on and keep it on and once he was moving he was fine. 'He was pretty naughty at the start, but he has been crying out for a race for a long time and he needs soft ground. He's been ready to go since the John Porter which was the middle of April, so he's just pretty bored now and needed a day out.' She added: 'He's not the easiest at home in that he can only go certain places, so you can't even vary his exercise because there's only two canters that he will ever go on. He likes routine, but he has got a little bit bored and he's not the sort you can take for a day out either as that blows his brains. 'He still feels great. I ride him every day and he doesn't feel like a nine-year-old, just the last two weeks you can see him looking at me saying 'what on earth are we doing this for'. It's good he's had a day out to remind him what it's all about.' The Owen Burrows-trained Waardah (7-1) powered clear to claim top honours in the other Listed race on the card – the Weatherbys/British EBF Agnes Keyser Fillies' Stakes. The three-year-old won on her Sandown debut in September and while she had since finished out of the places at Newmarket and Southwell, she looked to relish this step up to a mile and a quarter, finishing strongly under Callum Rodriguez to seal a two-and-three-quarter-length verdict. Burrows said: 'She's always been a filly we liked and hoped she could do something like that. 'I'll be honest, I half pencilled her in for Sandown next week in a handicap, but I saw the forecast and thought it would be worth giving her an entry in this and luckily the rain came. 'I think soft ground is probably important to her. She won first time up last year on soft ground and didn't run bad over a mile next time when she didn't really handle Newmarket's undulations. 'Coming to somewhere like here, that is always in the back of your mind, but she relaxed well and got into a nice rhythm and I thought the further she was going the better and if anything Callum said he struggled to pull her up, so I wouldn't be surprised if we go a bit further again at some stage. 'We'll just have to see what our summer weather does, but she's certainly one that going into the autumn we should have a bit of fun with.'
