In Matthew Rankin's dry comedy, one of the best films of 2024, Winnipeg is populated with Irani families and Farsi is the official language. The film has a number of interconnected stories, including two children on a mission to retrieve a currency note frozen in a block of ice, and a man (played by Rankin) returning home to visit his dying mother. This Korean film is based on the lives of two Go players: Cho Hun-hyun, a champion of the strategy game, and Lee Chang-ho, whom he discovers and mentors, but later must face as a competitor. A gangster tries to renounce his violent ways, but finds that walking away isn't simple. This Tamil film stars Suriya and Pooja Hegde, with a supporting cast of Jayaram, Joju George and Nassar. The biggest draw, though, is actor-director Karthik Subbaraj, whose coolly self-aware films (Pizza, Jigarthanda and its sequel) are unique even in the hyper-stylised world of Tamil cinema. The music is by Santhosh Narayan, who's worked with Subbaraj on most of his films. (In theatres)

Popular Tamil lyricist and writer Vairamuthu on Monday (June 9) criticised Tamil filmmakers for using verses from his songs as titles of their films without seeking permission from him. Taking to his official X handle, the lyricist claimed that those filmmakers neither sought permission nor informed him about the same. 'It's not just one or two. 'To ask, 'Why didn't you ask me before doing this?' would not be civilised of me. But then, would it not be uncivilised of them to not ask me even a single word before doing it?' wrote Vairamuthu. The tweet drew quite a few reactions from the netizens, one of whom wondered if this was a fair ask from the lyricist. 'If you look at it that way, no one can use anything. The words in your lyrics may have appeared in a book, a novel, a short story, or even a poem before. So what if those writers claim ownership of the said verses? You can state this if an entire song was misused,' read the post.

Thug Life Box Office Collections: Kamal Haasan has a DISASTROUS weekend, Set to wrap under 100cr worldwide
Tamil film Thug Life has a disastrous debut at the Indian box office, collecting a pathetic Rs. 40 crore approx over its four-day extended weekend. The Kamal Haasan starrer fared relatively better overseas, though still poor, with USD 4.80 million (Rs. 41 crore) weekend, for a worldwide haul of Rs. 81 crore. The film was a dead-on-arrival opening poorly, and then the final nail in the coffin was the outright rejection from the audience. It will be lights out for the film from today and will hardly have any run after the first week. It seems unlikely to cross Rs. 50 crore mark in India and will likely succumb to less than Rs. 100 crore worldwide. The big tentpole films from South India are doing this much and more on their opening day, and here this film is not sure to do in its entire lifetime. The Day Wise Box Office Collections of Thug Life in India are as follows: Thug Life is the second box office misfire for Kamal Haasan in a row, after Indian 2, or third, if one already considers the write-off that Indian 3 is. That said, even Indian 2 managed to gross over Rs. 100 crore worldwide. Ironically, it was exactly three years ago, in the same week, that Haasan stormed back to box office glory with the blockbuster Vikram. On paper, his lineup that followed Vikram seemed to promise a strong commercial run, but it has failed spectacularly. Despite the dismal theatrical performance, the producers of Thug Life are insulated from financial loss, as they fetched handsome prices for the non-theatrical rights. The losses will be with those who paid those prices, as they are certainly not going to recover them, and with the exhibition sector, which has been deprived of footfall during what should have been a peak summer window.
