Insider Projects Range of Looming Payday for Eagles Star
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
As the Philadelphia Eagles watched key members of their dominant Super Bowl-caliber defense walk away in free agency, it was a harsh reality. The price of winning makes it hard to keep a player's talent a secret. The price of drafting well makes it hard to keep a player in town long-term if other homegrown guys have to get paid as well.
The Eagles have a dominant force on their front line in Jalen Carter. Soon, they'll have to reward him for his dominance and there won't be any discounts available to them.
Carter doesn't owe the Eagles any hometown discount. The 24-year-old was born in Florida, played his college ball in Georgia, and has only lived in Philadelphia for two years. He's getting paid well as a ninth-overall pick, but he's considered to be on a massive discount at this stage in his career.
If the Eagles don't pay Carter, somebody else will. Barring any unexpected changes of heart, the Eagles are going to pay Carter. They brought him in to be the Fletcher Cox successor, after getting 12 seasons out of the former 12th overall pick. They have to envision the same type of relationship with Carter.
Recently, an Eagles insider pondered what a potential Carter deal could look like. There's a reason why they are thinking about it already.

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JANUARY 19: Jalen Carter #98 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks on before the game against the Los Angeles Rams during the NFC Divisional Playoff at Lincoln Financial Field on January 19, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More"Accounting for his vast potential and the ever-rising salary cap, we may be looking at the first $40 million interior lineman," NBC Sports Philadelphia's Reuben Frank writes. "Crazy? Maybe. But that's where all the numbers are pointing. Carter just turned 24. He's only been a starter for one year, and he's got unlimited upside."
In 2023, Carter started just one game. He played just 51 percent of the Eagles' defensive snaps. He came up with 33 tackles (eight for a loss), nine QB hits, and six sacks.
By year two, Carter was starting. Seeing over 80 percent of the team's defensive snaps, he came up with 42 tackles (12 for a loss), 16 QB hits, and 4.5 sacks during the regular season. In the playoffs, he accounted for nine tackles, seven hits on the QB, and two sacks.
"He's not going to make quarterback money, but Roseman will make him one of the highest-paid defensive players in the game. And if he doesn't quite reach $40 million per year, he's going to be at or above Nick Bosa / Maxx Crosby / Danielle Hunter range, which is between $34 and $36 million per year," Frank explained. "I'm thinking $37 or $38 million per year minimum. Carter is one of the best defensive players in football and he's about to get paid for it."

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin is unfireable no matter what in 2025
Steelers HC Mike Tomlin is unfireable no matter what in 2025 For many, many seasons, the Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase has been divided on head coach Mike Tomlin. Many fans consider him a future Hall of Famer and one of the elite coaches in the NFL. There is another significant portion of the fanbase who think Tomlin is what is keeping this season from winning a Super Bowl and always will be until he's fired. The reality probably falls somewhere in between. Nevertheless, it doesn't matter what the fans think; it only matters what the Steelers ownership thinks of Tomlin and history says they are happy with him and the job he's doing in Pittsburgh. This is a sentiment shared by Steelers beat writer Ray Fittipaldo. He appeared on the Rothman and Ice podcast and made it clear that Tomlin's job is absolutely safe at least through 2025. "[Tomlin is] as safe as can be because he's in the first year of a three-year contract that is paying him $50 million," Fittipaldo said. "Unless something goes terribly wrong and they go 3 and 14, or something like that - which I don't totally expect - you're not going to hear anything about Mike Tomlin." We have long said that Tomlin is unfireable and the Steelers will give him all the room he needs, no matter what the team's record. Tomlin has never had a season under .500 since taking over the head coaching job in Pittsburgh but even if the team were to backslide for a season or two, the Rooneys aren't going to just give up on him.

49ers GM explains why team decided to 'throttle back' on spending big in 2025 offseason
49ers GM explains why team decided to 'throttle back' on spending big in 2025 offseason It took awhile for the San Francisco 49ers to get active in this year's offseason. They made a handful of low-level free agent additions while watching several starters and key reserves leave to join other clubs. After the draft, the 49ers got busy with big-money extensions for tight end George Kittle, quarterback Brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner. Still, it was a strange offseason considering how willing the 49ers have been to spend money to fill holes in free agency. This year they chose to fill their more significant roster weaknesses via the draft. General manager John Lynch in an appearance on the 49ers Talk podcast explained the club's decision to 'throttle back' on their aggressiveness in free agency. "Look, we've been aggressive since Kyle (Shanahan) and I arrived here," Lynch said. "And that's what Jed and the family want to do. They want to be aggressive and we have been, but you can't just keep doing that. At some point you have to throttle back. Then we felt for the overall health of our cap and cash situation -- plus our roster in general -- you don't want to just become an aging roster. "The year before, we felt like we had such a good team. Let's keep it together, but you've got to stay young. And I think our draft last year was really good, and we had a chance with 11 picks to really add to that, and I was really excited. I thought we did a good job executing that plan." It's hard to argue that the 49ers executed their plan well. They wanted some of their less productive, expensive, aging players off the roster so they could either save money or accelerate their cap hits to this year when Purdy is still not making a ton of money against the cap. With 11 picks to supplement an eight-player class from a season ago, San Francisco has successfully made their roster younger and less expensive in the immediate future. On the other hand, whether this strategy ultimately works remains to be seen. The 49ers aren't tanking, but they're relying a lot on rookies for a club that's trying to get back to Super Bowl contention. On-field production will ultimately tell us whether the 49ers successfully executed their long-term strategy, but for now the offseason appears to have played out exactly as they expected.
