Steelers HC Mike Tomlin is unfireable no matter what in 2025
For many, many seasons, the Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase has been divided on head coach Mike Tomlin. Many fans consider him a future Hall of Famer and one of the elite coaches in the NFL. There is another significant portion of the fanbase who think Tomlin is what is keeping this season from winning a Super Bowl and always will be until he's fired.
The reality probably falls somewhere in between. Nevertheless, it doesn't matter what the fans think; it only matters what the Steelers ownership thinks of Tomlin and history says they are happy with him and the job he's doing in Pittsburgh.
This is a sentiment shared by Steelers beat writer Ray Fittipaldo. He appeared on the Rothman and Ice podcast and made it clear that Tomlin's job is absolutely safe at least through 2025.
"[Tomlin is] as safe as can be because he's in the first year of a three-year contract that is paying him $50 million," Fittipaldo said. "Unless something goes terribly wrong and they go 3 and 14, or something like that - which I don't totally expect - you're not going to hear anything about Mike Tomlin."
We have long said that Tomlin is unfireable and the Steelers will give him all the room he needs, no matter what the team's record. Tomlin has never had a season under .500 since taking over the head coaching job in Pittsburgh but even if the team were to backslide for a season or two, the Rooneys aren't going to just give up on him.

Former Falcons WR Jared Bernhardt returns to lacrosse
Jared Bernhardt moved from lacrosse to football after a stellar collegiate career at Maryland and made it all the way to the NFL, but he's now back to his original path. Bernhardt won the Tewaarton Award as the country's top lacrosse player while at Maryland and then transferred to Ferris State to play wide receiver. He signed with the Falcons in 2022 and appeared in two games before going on the reserve/retired list in 2023. He returned to spend some time in the CFL, but is now playing in the Premier Lacrosse League. Bernhardt said he has no regrets about his circuitous route over the last few years. 'Some people may have all the speculation about leaving at the top of your game, but for me, I just feel that was the right move for me,' Bernhardt said, via Edward Lee of the Baltimore Sun. 'I wouldn't change it. As I said, a lot of great experiences, ups and downs and a lot of good people you meet along the way, and if I didn't do that, I wouldn't have had that stuff. So I'm fortunate enough to have been able to go through all of that.' Bernhardt has scored one goal in two games with the Denver Outlaws since his return.

Justin Reid picks off Kyler Murray to win NFL chess tournament
In the fourth edition of Blitzchamps, a chess tournament featuring eight current and former NFL players, Justin Reid emerged as the winner, taking home the largest share of the $100,000 prize pool for charity. Two-time Super Bowl-winning safety Reid, who signed with the New Orleans Saints this offseason, won his second straight Blitzchamps, beating Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray in the finals on June 16. The eight participants to compete for charity in high-speed chess were Reid, Murray, Justin Herbert, Mack Hollins, Richard Sherman, Rashawn Slater, AJ Dillon, and Harrison Phillips. Players played online on and it was livestreamed on the site's YouTube channel. Congratulations to New Orleans Saints Justin Reid for winning #BlitzChamps IV! He's the first EVER back-to-back BlitzChamps Champion and has won $30,000 toward his charity, @jreidindeed! 🎉 — (@chesscom) June 16, 2025 Reid said on the stream post-tournament: 'I love (chess). I'm obsessed with it. I play it almost every day. Whenever we're getting ready to play a game (in the NFL) and you start to get excited because you know that moment is coming where you're about to go into combat with your brothers, I play one or two games to calm myself down and bring myself back to peace because I play my best when I'm calm and thinking clearly, rather then when I'm jacked up on emotion. Advertisement 'So in those two ways, the games are very similar. You get too emotional and you make mistakes, a blunder here and there. If you stay calm under pressure, it ends up translating pretty well. … Sometimes you can see what your opponent is about to do before they do it. Both on the chess board and football field so you do a move to counter that before they even get to it.' Reid won $30,000 for his charity, JReid Indeed, which focuses on supporting disadvantaged youth and communities through interactive programs, community engagement, and technology access in the communities of Houston, Baton Rouge, and Kansas City. It was a double-elimination format, with a winners and losers bracket. All matches were best-of-two, and each player started with five minutes on the clock in the winners' bracket, three minutes in the losers' bracket, and both had one-second increments with each move (considered time to move the piece). In the event of a tie, players competed in a sudden-death match, as happened in the final. Reid defeated Murray 2-1 in a repeat matchup of last year's Blitzchamps III final. Murray resigned in the third game after a blunder when he moved h4, trapping his Queen when Reid moved Bg4, but the quarterback still won $20,000 for the Kyler Murray Foundation.

49ers Insider Predicts Outcome of Controversial Kicker Decision
49ers Insider Predicts Outcome of Controversial Kicker Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers brought in a haul of new pieces, on both the roster and coaching staff, to wipe last season's 6-11 disappointment from memory. Advertisement Injuries forced the Niners to struggle in multiple areas, including special teams. Young kicker Jake Moody, who many were content with being San Fran's place kicker for years to come, had a letdown of a season as he was nursing an ankle injury. The former third-round pick in 2023 was an 84% (21-25) marksman on field goals as a rookie, but his sophomore season featured a slump he is not proud of. Last season, Moody finished ranked 33rd among all NFL kickers (minimum 10 attempts) making just 70.6% (24-34) of his field goal attempts. 'It's unacceptable to be kicking the way I was the second half of the year,' Moody told The Athletic. Advertisement In his defense, he started 13-of-14 before his injury, which led to a shaky return. The Michigan product was a worrisome 11-of-20 on field goals in the last nine games of the year. Throughout Moody's struggles, many 49ers fans had seen enough and were calling for a replacement. NFL journeyman Greg Joseph was signed this free agency as a potential alternative, but Moody's time may not be over just yet. Even with a new special teams coordinator, a new long snapper, and a new holder/punter, NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco believes Moody will remain as the Week 1 starter. "I think Jake Moody would have to, I don't know necessarily implode, but he would just have to give off the bad vibes that they would feel like it's necessary to move on," Maiocco said on Bay Area radio station KNBR. Advertisement Moody already has all the motivation he needs heading into next season. With a slight tweak to his kicking motion, he's expecting more consistent makes this season. He has been working out with kicking coach Brandon Kornblue and the pair has made a meticulous change to Moody's approach: he will now take just two steps to the ball rather than three. 'It's been going great,' Moody said about the adjustment. 'Obviously, when you have been doing something since the sixth grade, it was definitely challenging at the start. I had to keep telling myself to stick with it. 'The goal is more consistency because at the end of the day, that's what keeps you in the NFL." Advertisement This adjustment, and the changes to personnel around him, should fuel Moody's fire and lead to a bounce-back season. "I think that, in a lot of ways, [these moves have] given Jake Moody a new lease on life with the 49ers," Maiocco added. "And I do think that he is—maybe not the overwhelming favorite—but certainly the clear favorite to win that job." With Joseph now waiting in the wings, 49ers fans can be a bit more at ease with the kicking situation if things go down hill. But expect Moody to trot out for at least the first game or two as the starting kicker in 2025.
